Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the rollout of GenAI.mil today in a video posted to X. To hear Hegseth tell it, the website is “the future of American warfare.” In practice, based on what we know so far from press releases and Hegseth’s posturing, GenAI.mil appears to be a custom chatbot interface for Google Gemini that can handle some forms of sensitive—but not classified—data.

Hegseth’s announcement was full of bold pronouncements about the future of killing people. These kinds of pronouncements are typical of the second Trump administration which has said it believes the rush to “win” AI is an existential threat on par with the invention of nuclear weapons during World War II.

Christians attempting to follow their favorite commandment: Thou shall kill

[–] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago

A truly memorable story! I remember the tale of Jesus jumping down from the cross, jumpstarting his campaign to overthrow the Roman Empire. The greatest lesson to learn from Jesus is that mercy is a weakness.

(This is based off the "The Inquisitor" universe where Christianity is openly based off of cruelty against one's enemies)

Now he can put the blame for committing war crimes on the AI!

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 21 points 1 day ago

Thats most definitely a major point

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 40 points 1 day ago (1 children)

His "announcement" reads like it was written by Google's marketing department.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, just sponsered by Google. Yeah, I wouldn't put it past this administration to BE ads.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Shit, they did it the first time around.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

American "Patriots" are fucking weird, man. Like... "You can't disrespect the flag, but here's a snot-rag with the flag on it."

You people are nuts.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 17 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

American here.

Can confirm.

Over 4 decades living in this circus sideshow and I can tell you with certainty that Americans have a serious mental health crisis. I see it all around me, all the time. Uneducated fools with no concern for the future, no critical thinking skills, and deep psychological problems.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 14 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

Shoes to drag it through the dirt, undies to rub your crotch on it and if anyone shows me condoms to fuck the flag with, I won't be the least bit surprised.

What a cringey, cowardly beta cuck he is. Go back to the bar Kegsbreath.

Come on, 404... don't tickle their pickle with this "secretary of war" bullshit.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Honestly, I prefer it. Sure, the method used is wrong, but the change from DoW to DoD was bullshit. What are we defending from? The US hasn't fought a defensive war since the War of 1812. The name change was just to make it appear like a nice friendly organization your should support, rather than a bloodthirsty organization you should be wary of. It's the department of war (or "special military operations" really) no matter what the name is. They aren't defending us with 99.99% of their actions.

Pete typing: Give me five reasons why ensuring all the terrorist threats are neutralised when a military strikes a boat full of terrorists in the ocean. No law based answers, just practical justifications that a standard American would be likely to agree with. Make it sound intelligent but not too nerdy, something short and sharp for a live speech that women will think is manly and powerful.

GenAI.mil: Sure thing! I can help you with that.....

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's like USA is proud of having enemies.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They're emotionally stunted bullies who equate animosity and fear. Just like bully will assume that you're afraid of him if you ignore him, the US thinks "If they hate us, they must fear us, therefore it means we are strongest and bestest."

The concept of "soft power", which is what the US used to trade on, is completely alien to these idiots. All they know about "might makes right" is to use naked displays of it and then call themselves strong

FFS why does the next generation Nazi's have to be such losers? I'm not trying to say anything positive about WWII Nazis but at least...

I don't know but these losers here have here now somehow make Nazi's seem competent and semi respectful.

At least the Nazi's exploded onto the world because they had something going for them? They had good generals and in the beginning made strategically good decisions?

How is the world losing to these worms?

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (7 children)

No, they didn't. The Nazis were every bit as much of an incompetent mess.

Their generals largely sucked; they did as well as they did because their main opponent - France - shit the bed unbelievably hard, having made all the wrong preparations to fight basically the wrong war. Poland got pincered by two great powers at once, Czechoslovakia held out far longer than they should have given the differences in military power. The Nazis made some smart choices here and there, such as going through the Ardennes, or the decision to put radios in all their tanks, but their strategic and tactical "brilliance" was entirely invented after the fact, mostly by the generals themselves in their autobiographies where they were given free reign to blame every bad decision on Hitler.

Economically, their success was entirely down to running a plunder economy. They basically wrote a whole lot of cheques they couldn't cash, then looted Czechoslovakia and Poland's treasuries to foot the bill.

They were every bit the gaggle of squabbling incompetents that this administration is. They just had really good propaganda. This is always what fascism looks like. It's an ideology that uplifts the incompetent, by design.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it's worth pointing out that blitzkrieg wasn't really a military doctrine so much as the organic movements field commanders made in the field when given loosey goosey orders from high command to the effect of "go west, idk, lol." much of the failure in operation barbarossa can be attributed to:

  • the basic core plan of nazi germany of increasing national wealth through war being really fucking stupid
  • a fundamental miscalculation that the soviets would be just as feckless and limp wristed as the French and British
  • a failure to take into consideration that the French and British were poorly coordinated because they had two high commands who fundamentally didn't trust the other to try, so neither ended up doing much of anything. a contrast to soviet high command which was very centralized
  • removal of initiative from field commanders and all orders coming from german high command

the thing to understand about nazi germany is that the things they got right aside from propaganda they mostly got right by accident. the only thing the nazis really understood was how to market and advertise the third reich. their propaganda was so effective that it would be the template for advertising and propaganda all the way until today, both in the first (capitalist) and second (soviet) worlds. next time you see a coca-cola commercial really pay attention to it and realize that it's nazi propaganda in the service of getting you to remember coca-cola exists and getting you to experience some strong emotion in order for you to want to drink a coca-cola immediately. i even feel a little awkward saying their name since i'm playing into theis hand by doing it, but i need people to take a critical eye to ads the next time they see them and think about what it means that the world looked upon the horrors of world war ii and said "i bet we could use this to sell razor cartridges"

if you ever want to know how it was so easy for the nazis to come back under the name of the alt right, don't look much further than madmen. that show explicitly gives us a glimpse into what america did with the nazi propaganda machine. some time, go look at some 1920s adverts for american products. you'll notice they give you a long chunk of written prose making a compelling argument that the thing they're selling will be a marked improvement over what you have now (it's usually not a valid argument). but after wwii it's much more just beautiful people holding the product with wide toothy grins. instead of saying "we must kill all the Jews" it says "you must buy the product to be happy"

i'll also point out that israel has been using nazi propaganda techniques without recontextualizing the techniques for nearly 80 years now. only the untermensch is not the Jew, obviously, it's the Muslim. ben gvir even uses nazi terms used to refer to Jews to refer to Palestinians.

we've had a few chances to listen and fix this shit. spoken word jazz, hippies, punks, and hip hop artists were screaming this shit at the tops of their lungs for 60 years at least. there's even a chumbawamba song, nazi, that explicitly explains how the nazi ideology wormed its way into the post war society. and i'll leave you, dear reader, whoever you are, with a couple lines from that song

The world is riddled with maggots; the maggots are getting fat
They're making a tasty meal of all the bosses and bureaucrats
They're taking over the boardrooms, and they're fat and full of pride

And they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died

So if you meet with these historians, I'll tell you what to say
Tell them that the Nazis never really went away
They're out there burning houses down and peddling racist lies

And we'll never rest again until every Nazi dies

You know what, fuck it. Put that fuckin LLM in. Make the world's most destructive force into an incompetent shit show.

Let's just brainstorm here a few wonderful ways AI could ruin the military!

"General AI sir, what are our order to deal with this threat?"

"I am sorry, but I cannot give orders to shoot at another country due to it being morally, and ethically reprehensible. Perhaps you should find some common ground, maybe even take them out to diner instead?"

Truly a clown nation.
