Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced the rollout of GenAI.mil today in a video posted to X. To hear Hegseth tell it, the website is “the future of American warfare.” In practice, based on what we know so far from press releases and Hegseth’s posturing, GenAI.mil appears to be a custom chatbot interface for Google Gemini that can handle some forms of sensitive—but not classified—data.

Hegseth’s announcement was full of bold pronouncements about the future of killing people. These kinds of pronouncements are typical of the second Trump administration which has said it believes the rush to “win” AI is an existential threat on par with the invention of nuclear weapons during World War II.

Come on, 404... don't tickle their pickle with this "secretary of war" bullshit.

Honestly, I prefer it. Sure, the method used is wrong, but the change from DoW to DoD was bullshit. What are we defending from? The US hasn't fought a defensive war since the War of 1812. The name change was just to make it appear like a nice friendly organization your should support, rather than a bloodthirsty organization you should be wary of. It's the department of war (or "special military operations" really) no matter what the name is. They aren't defending us with 99.99% of their actions.

While I agree DoD was used for anything but in practice, we should still hold it to those defensive goals instead of giving in to MAGA’s wet dreams.

Too bad Americans voted otherwise.

Guarantee you that actual Americans (i.e., the ones whose ancestors were here long before this shithole country) did not vote for this. It's the old white immigrants that voted for this.

I take your point, but I disagree with just letting it run rampant and moving on. Like the OP mentioned in their reply to you, we should hold them accountable instead of greasing the machine just because the name fits their actions better.

If the US populace wasn't so fucked, mentally, we would be dissolving the DoD into DoHS instead of tearing apart the DoE, but here we are.

I just think that calling it the DoD was greasing the wheels of another more prevalent group. I don't know if DoW actually greases their wheels here though. Does it actually manufacture consent like calling it the DoD does? I think they just did it, to be crude, to grease their cocks.
