National Trust looks to halt construction, claiming Trump tore down historic East Wing without needed permission

Donald Trump is facing a federal lawsuit seeking to halt construction on his $300m White House ballroom, with historic preservationists accusing the president of violating multiple federal laws by tearing down part of the iconic building without required reviews or congressional approval.

The legal challenge, filed on Friday by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the US district court for the District of Columbia, represents the most significant attempt yet to stop Trump’s 90,000-sq-ft addition to the White House complex. The organization is seeking a temporary restraining order to freeze all construction activities until proper federal oversight procedures are completed.

“No president is legally allowed to tear down portions of the White House without any review whatsoever – not President Trump, not President Joe Biden, and not anyone else,” the complaint reads. “And no president is legally allowed to construct a ballroom on public property without giving the public the opportunity to weigh in.”

In the monthly server updates for lemmy.zip/piefed.zip there's a mantra that's repeated every month. I think it's wonderful and can be applied to the Fediverse as a whole.

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here :)

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give the Fediverse (Original: Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip) isn’t money, praise, or interpretive dance (although we would absolutely accept the last one). Its participation.

Upvote the things you like. Start a discussion, debate, or ponder about whether water is wet or merely makes things wet. Make new communities if you don’t see one that fits your oddly specific niche obsession.
(We don’t judge. Well, we try not to judge anyway.)

The fediverse naturally ebbs and flows, tides of people come and go. But if you’ve found yourself oddly attached to this strange little corner of the internet? Wonderful. Help it breathe. Help it grow. Help it be just a tiny bit weirder in the best possible way.

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

Federal immigration agents tackled and arrested a Somali American man in Minneapolis on Tuesday and detained him for about two hours for no apparent reason other than his ethnicity.

Mubashir, who moved to the United States as a small boy and became a naturalized American citizen, said that he stepped onto a sidewalk near 4th Street and Cedar Avenue during his lunch break when two masked men approached him. The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood is the heart of the city’s Somali American community.

Sweeping Democratic victories in off-year elections seem to be foreshadowing a very good midterms for the party, and one expert believes it’s even bigger than that.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fundamentally transform legislative power,” Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), which focuses on electing Democrats to statehouses, told Mother Jones.

Additional context:

Native speakers of my mother tongue do not all understand each other due to some pretty extreme dialects. Now that I'm in Europe, I've noticed multiple instances of people sometimes not understand the dialect of someone from a village 10-20 km away...

In contrast, for example most American, British, and Australian people can just... understand each other like that?? I never thought much about it before but it's pretty incredible

edit: many, not most

Based on a few quick searches, here's what I came up with. You can tell that I got pretty bored once I got to the Lanthanide series and beyond. The ones without ":" are the ones I didn't check, as I doubt there's any software called "Dysprosium" and "Roentgenium", but I would love to be proven wrong!

One thing of note, I included a few racehorses are named after elements (most of which from the 1800s, which is interesting)

1 - H - Hydrogen: open-source drum machine

2 - He - Helium: Chromium-based browser, "Helium10" is e-commerce software

3 - Li - Lithium: "Li3", formerly "lithium", is a PHP web framework, optimization mod for Minecraft

4 - Be - Beryllium: proprietary lathe software written in Python

5 - B - Boron: N/A?

6 - C - Carbon: C-based API developed by Apple to port classic Mac apps to MacOS X, programming language developed by Google to be interoperable with C++, "Karbon" is some accounting management software

7 - N - Nitrogen: Financial planning software (previously "Riskalyze"). Funnily enough, there is also a racehorse called "Nitrogen" which, according to Wikipedia, was the 2024 "Canadian Champion Two-Year-Old Filly"!

8 - O - Oxygen: default font in KDE, "OxygenOS" is the skin of Android in (global) OnePlus phones. "Oxygen XML editor" is self-explanatory. Again, there is a racehorse called "Oxygen" which Wikipedia says was regarded as the "leading two-year-old filly in the South of England in 1830"!

9 - F - Fluorine: some productivity app

10 - Ne - Neon: game engine, music visualisation software, "KDE Neon" is a distro developed by KDE

11 - Na - Sodium: Minecraft optimization mod, MMO game for PS3, and interestingly enough, another racehorse!

13 - Al - Aluminium: Google's "Aluminium OS" (replacement for ChromeOS), various software designed for manufacturing/designing aluminium parts

14 - Si - Silicon: "Silicon IDE" is self explanatory, "Silicon Labs" is a Japanese technology company, Apple's processors are known as "Apple Silicon", you of course have "Silicon Valley"

15 - P - Phosphorus: some IoT enterprise solution. This is also yet another racehorse, which won the 1837 Epsom Derby despite having a leg injury!

16 - S - Sulfur/Sulphur: a modern old-school action-adventure game, codename for Fedora 9. "Sulphur Nimbus: Hel's Elixir" is a game on itch.io where you control a hippogriff, interesting!

17 - Cl - Chlorine: library to interact with OpenCL devices

18 - Ar - Argon: CAD modelling software, tool for developing Roblox games. "Argon2" is a cryptographic key derivation function that won the 2015 Password Hashing Competition

Some DHS officials have threatened to quit and are concerned their emails are being monitored, sources say.

White House pressure to ramp up deportations has sparked rising tension and finger-pointing inside the Department of Homeland Security, with the agency’s secretary, Kristi Noem, and her top adviser blaming subordinates for not hitting arrest quotas and undermining their relationships inside the West Wing, according to two DHS officials with direct knowledge of the matter.

Noem and her close adviser Corey Lewandowski have sought to deflect blame from themselves for any White House frustration with the pace and scope of the deportations, pinning it instead on the leaders of the agencies in charge of immigration enforcement — acting ICE Director Todd Lyons and Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott, the DHS officials said.

Underscoring the turmoil, Scott recently expressed concern to colleagues that Lewandowski is able to monitor his emails, the two officials and another DHS official said, sparking concern among other top staffers that their messages were being reviewed.

Every waking day of every waking use of the devices I have, I find myself constantly fighting a lot with the shitty input and recognition of said input. Things I swore I clicked once but having to click twice or sometimes three times. Such lag input between the last time I clicked and to the time the function of whatever I had to click fucking functioned.

With phones it is obviously worse, with finger input being either too sensitive or too dulled to register, inquiring more touches just to get somewhere or to type something, along with the separated frustrations aside trying to type on awful keyboard interfaces.
