!fediverse@lemmy.world is not a place to file your grievances with "free speech", disrupting users, moderation, etc.

If you have problems with users: File complaints to the mods or just block them.

If you have problems with mods: File complaints with admins of the instance or just migrate to an alternative community.

If you have problems with an entire instance: Just leave it.

This community was essentially unmoderated for a while and I've been recently approached to take over moderation duties here. What I don't intend to do is to change any existing rules here but to enforce what has piled up in the moderation queue.

The discussion under the recent post about spam accounts turned into a flamewar regarding US domestic politics which has literally nothing to do with the Fediverse.

With dozens of comments, I don't have the bandwidth to sift through them individually and I've locked the thread. The PSA about spam accounts still stands which is why I didn't remove the post. The accounts involved with that flamewar get a pass for this time. Consider this a warning. Further trolling about US political parties will result in bans.

It's with great honor, I inform you all that I've finally been Nicoled. I thought I was left out for a minute there

So. What Am I getting banned?

Bluesky, which uses it, has been opened to federation now, and the standard basically just looks better than ActivityPub. Has anyone heard about a project to make a Lemmy-style "link aggregator" service on it?

A while ago I started loosing hope in the internet, even before ai it was mostly bots, and copy and paste articles. Everything is exponentially getting more and more malicious, with algorithms made to suck you in with obviously no care for the human user, just make stock go up, and make comically evil board members happy.

Not enough people are talking about what lemmy and bluesky have done, I'm not that tech savvy but from what I've understand their decentralized nature makes people always in control as opposed to one company.

Going on these sites brings me back to the earlier days of the internet, where it felt like interacting with real people, posting to an actual community, rather than being in one of those dystopian movies with slurm drinks and infinite amount of trash being pumped out by bots, to get as many views for monetization/outreach which is what pretty much all major social medias feel today.

So I'm trying to workshop a bot that post news to accounts and communities based on American countries. I have looked into rss feeds and not every news source has one so it seems more like I have to go the scraper route. I decided to start with YouTube links because YouTube has an API and that would make it easy to get the information from. I'm hoping to make this open sourced, and im figure out a software structure.

The hole idea is to build up niches in fediverse to keep people retaining hopefully I can this program easy enough to use

Here are some examples of 'no stupid questions' being apolitical

Question here from a new Lemmy user-

Is there any point to creating accounts across multiple Lemmy servers? For example if I wanted to claim the same username on a small hobby Lemmy but also a large general purpose one, does it make sense for me to create multiple accounts, or is that just a waste of time/resources?

It was asked a couple of months ago, but given the AI enshittification, it seems a good time to ask again.

I looked around and found:

  • Pinetta is/was in development but seems dead with only an alpha release. I am chasing this up on Matrix. edit: Apparently still, technically, active although progress has been slow
  • Pinry is a FOSS alternative, but not federated, that seems dormant. However, it works and is in Python, so someone could bolt an AP server to it, he says airily.

I apologize if this is old news, but I just noticed it. It looks like Kagi has added Fediverse Forums as a default Web search option.

Hello everyone,

My friends and I are developing a fediverse hosting service as part of a worker owned democratic company. We're committed to building on European infrastructure and, wherever possible, using green service providers for server hosting, S3 storage, and more. We are based in Denmark.

We're currently seeking users for our alpha/demo phase who would like to host their own Mastodon instance with us for free. All you need to provide is your own domain.

As this is an alpha release, please note the service comes "as is" with potential downtime, bugs, lacks and defects. Ideally, we're looking for users interested in building an active community on their instance, which helps us properly test our system.

We've implemented robust backup solutions, so at worst, instances can be restored from backups. You'll always have the freedom to export your data when our demo phase concludes if you choose not to continue with our paid service.

If you're interested or have questions about the project, please contact me here or via email at contact@wilian.me.

Best regards, W

Edit: Thank you all for your interest. Things are still taking shape as we’re developing the platform. Therefore I can’t give meaningful answers to your questions, since everything is still to be settled. This is in a very early phase, so please just see this post as an invitation to try having a Mastodon instance for free for a while. I’m looking forward to giving a more elaborate presentation of the project in the future.

Raccoon for Friendica is finally available on the PlayStore too. And is compatible with Mastodon and Mastodon glitch-soc

Raccoon is a free and open source mobile-first client for Friendica and Mastodon.

-:-

Friendica is an outstanding social plaftorm, featuring powerful characteristics which make it unique in the federated world:
rich text editing, long posts, support for titles and spoilers;
• native support for ActivityPub groups;
• direct messages;
• media gallery where you can manage photos and albums;
• possibility to organize your contacts in circles;
• ability to quote (cross-post) other people's posts;
• RSS feed import;
• integrated event calendar;
• of course, much more (see the official documentation)…

The web interface is great to access all of these features but on a mobile device there are different constraints for usability and readability, so it comes in handy to have an app to use the most important functions of the platform.

Main features:

• timeline view with ability to switch feed type (public, local, subscriptions, user-made lists);
post detail, i.e. opening a conversation in its context and see the replies, number of re-shares and people who added it to favourites;
• user detail with ability to see posts, post and replies, pinned posts and media, subscribe for notifications from a user, follow/send a request or unfollow them, see following/followers;
• support for ActivityPub groups, with the ability to open threads in forum mode;
• see trending posts, hashtags, links and following recommendations;
follow/unfollow an hashtag and view all the posts containing a given hashtag;
• post actions (re-share, favorite, bookmark) and – for own ones – edit, delete or pin to profile;
• global search hashtags, post and users containing some specific terms;
• customize the application appearance with color themes, font face and size, etc;
• login via OAuth2;
• view and edit one's own profile data;
• view incoming notifications and filter the list;
• manage one's own follow requests and accept/reject each one of them;
• view the list of one's own favorites, bookmarks and followed hashtags;
• create a post/reply with formatted text, image attachments (and alt text), spoiler and title;
• schedule a post (and change its schedule date) or save it to drafts;
report posts/users to administrators for content moderation;
• mute/unmute, block/unblock users and manage the list of muted/blocked users;
• manage one's own circles (user-defined lists);
• see polls (read only);
multi-account with easy ability to switch between accounts (and, in anonymous mode, switch instance);
• send direct messages to other users and see conversations;
• manage one's own photo gallery;
• view one's own event calendar (read only).

There's so many ways to interact with the Fediverse. The most popular, by far, seems to be Mastodon, but Lemmy, Misskey, and Pixelfed are also relatively popular. Kbin used to be popular, but it has apparently been abandoned, and is mostly dead at this point.

I recently learned that Mbin is a thing, checked it out, and it looked really cool! Has anyone used it? How different is it from Lemmy? I hear they have better integration with Mastodon.

What Fediverse services do you actually, regularly use?

For me, it's mostly Lemmy, though I do hop on Mastodon every now and then.

Looks to build mastodon account and Lemmy community for my county, just curious if there's any programs that can post to Lemmy mastdon

It would tie in better with the email analogy, and it could show that they all just provide access to the same network.

What do you think?

Does it exist? I miss when YikYak was for hometowns and you could view other cities or comment/post there if in range. I don't like its current state after coming back. It was like the neighbour apps but less facebooky with a crowd under 50, was the ultimate local news source.
