That’s all ~~red~~ states.

From California to Mississippi, the anti-tax era got everybody. Now states don't have domestic revenue to pay for shit, so they have to go through the Feds for everything.

Ironic, in a way, since the core of anti-tax Republicanism was supposed to be about shrinking the size of government. But here we are, beholden to whichever idiot or asshole happens to be running the executive branch at a given moment

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Remind me again why California needs the federal government as opposed to the other way around?

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Broadly speaking? For the same reason every other state does. Continental unity opens up trade and travel, exploits economies of scale, and simplifies the legal system for interstate business and for civil rights purposes.

Specifically? Because federal coordination helps manage natural disasters (like wildfires) and centralize big programs life Medicare/SS and secures national defense (which California profits from handsomely).

They declared theyre not foing to be helping us with disasters, though. So what the fuck is the point?

Just so they can invade our cities and kidnap our neighbors to die in the florida swamp?

If we need trade allies, mexico sounds pretty great. They actually make things there. We share language food and while not perfectly aligned on values, are far closer than the eastern neighbors, who loudly hate us-and it's rapidly becoming mutual.

Edit:Not that i would hold turning palo alto to a sheet of luminous glass against anyone on the planet.

Frankly, Cali, Oregon, and Washington ought to form a Western Coast Pact, where if one of them gets unfair treatment from the feds, they all lock down their ports. Trump's tariff tax on Americans, plus shipping delays and extra shipping costs would make the general public pretty mad at the situation. Hypothetically, companies can (they won't) absorb tariff costs, but supply line interruptions are immediate total chaos, and can have knock-on effects for decades

They don't. If California stopped sending taxes to DC, the rest of the country would be fucked.

Im not gonna shit on alabama+ga. Death to their government and the old confederates, but multiple civil rights movements have kicked off there; they're still fighting because enough of them stand with humanity. Florida is frustrating and annoying, but i think if all the fascists died tomorrow they'd be paragons of redneck virtue. Louisiana is drunk, they didn't mean to, too diverse to paint with a broad brush, and have you tasted the food? Mississippi is fucked, but they're fucked by poverty and the people who suffer largely aren't the ones ruining the rest of our shit; they need regime change. Etc etc.

Texas is uniquely free of virtue. They have money; they use it to fuck over the restbof us, then ask for ours when their total lack of education or infrastructure gets them in trouble. They have resources, they dont fuvking build anything but parking lots woth them. Theyre uniquely positioned to stand against climate change, but always seem to stand for it. They ruin their natural beauty, they spit on their diversity, they destroy the rest of our educational systems, they get us into bullshit wars while constantly showing their cowardice.

Texans are uniquely awful, uniquely free of virtue, and not human in any meaningful way.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Alabama was proof of how shitty things have to get before people start taking action.

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

They were fighting cop city from day zero. They just lost.

Just because you didnt hear about it, doesnt mean it wasnt happening. Edit: i think of alabama and georgia as the same place. I don't know why.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 112 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Texas wants their cake and to eat it too

same as it always was, the Alamo is a perfect example of this

renegade americans who want to establish their own country cant even defend the fucking place and it takes the US Army to come and rescue them... Never forget that the Alamo represents slavery the same way the Confederate flag does

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It doesn't have a basement?

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] mergingapples@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

This one is going over my head. What about a basement? Where joke?

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 17 points 1 day ago

There are no bicycles down there Pee-wee!

my favorite is Ozzy being banned for 10 years from playing in San Antonio for pissing on the statue in the plaza of the Alamo

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Texas is the embodiment of the libertarian house cat analogy.

Please review your visit of Texas.

1 star, would not recommend.

The top image will be recycled when it’s election season and they all vote Republican again.

I remember after the school shooting, uvalde county overwhelmingly voted for Abbot and Trump, Cruz, and every crooked judge and sheriff who did nothing while their children died. At a certain point sympathy evaporated for a community that is working against its own interests, and against the lives of their own kids. This is how I feel about Texas in particular among all the states, i just have no more empathy to spare for Texas.

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah. I get mississippi is fucked and most of the people who get fucked are poor and black and didnt ask for that. Louisiana is such a complicated mix, and besides, they were drunk; they didn't mean it. I get florida got owned by fascists (they just want to party, and Florida man sounds fun as hell if he keeps a safe distance), even alabama has showed it spine and the people's willingness to resist over and over again.

But texas... I just have no sympathy. These fucking moochers and looters who have the resources but refuse every trace of civilization no longer deserve our help. Theyre just goong to spend that money on guns and death squads and privatization that helps them fuck up like this again; at no point in their history as a US state have they been any better than this. Not another penny to these scum.

Edit: plus, they can make mexican food kinda suck. Do you have any idea how hard it is to use the right ingredients and make mexican food suck?

[–] ronigami@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

They did invest heavily in renewables. They executed pretty poorly because the power still goes out every storm but at least they tried.

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 31 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Don't you wish there was a way to quit enabling these shit-kickin' shitheads. To let them actually live what they preach, in isolation without their shitwater splashing and spilling around everywhere else.

None of their politicians asking for handouts behind closed doors and under the table, too embarrassed to admit to the voters that yes, indeed, a collective government IS extremely useful AND convenient when you need it the most, and not only when YOU need it but also when OTHERS need it, too.

But one might as well try and explain quantum mechanics to a goddamned brick wall.

Lot of boots in Texas which means a lot of bootstraps for them to use to pull themselves up!

In all seriousness, they should be getting aid and relief from the federal government. Thats what FEMA is for, that's what the true American way should be; supporting each other and helping out where we can.

I wish the best for the residents of Texas but anybody there upset about not getting aid needs has only their local, state and federal government to blame. Unfortunately, some folks will get caught in the middle.

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 6 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I'd like to see a law in place that says if a congressman votes against aid for another state during a disaster, then they must resign immediately after requesting aid for their own state during a disaster.

Put your money where you mouth is.

We had a real union before. If there was a natural disaster in California or Texas or Florida or New York, we all pitched in to help. That's what federal taxes that go to FEMA do.

That's breaking down. No matter why it's happened or who is responsible, this is a bad sign.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It isn't "breaking down", it's getting sabotaged by domestic terrorists.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

And corporate greed induced climate change but you said terrorists so yeah they're already included in your post.

Also, youbknow, marines deployed to start depopulating california.

Can we not forget that part?

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

The breakdown already happened. We are in a civil war. Federal taxes are now a theft without recourse under the threat of violence.

Just your friendly reminder that Texas governor Greg Abbott is a racist piece of shit and probably a kkk member who used his powers as governor to free another bigoted racist killer Daniel Perry convicted by a jury of his peers. They don't care if you murder their constituents as long as they can benefit politically from it.

https://apnews.com/article/army-sergeant-murder-parole-black-lives-matter-4b1d0c54b0de451642bcf1e8cd75a7e5

" On May 29, 2020, days after George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer prompted nationwide protests, Perry sent a text message saying, “I might go to Dallas to shoot looters.”

Two days later, according to the records, Perry said in a Facebook message that when he is in Dallas, “no protestors go near me or my car.”

“Can you catch me a negro daddy,” the other man replied.

“That is what I am hoping,” Perry said. "

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I mean, that's what the federal government is for. Or well, that's how it should be.

[–] BossDj@piefed.social 18 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but if the state is constantly working it's ass off to stop other states from getting that federal assistance, they should go fuck themselves.

I really want, at this point, blue states to unionize this stuff on their own and let those red states deal with their own shit like they keep demanding

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's no compelling reason why a state a big and wealthy as Texas can't afford to manage natural disasters on this scale.

Their state leadership simply chooses not to do so. And the state media saturated the airwaves with "Nothing to be done, government would only make things worse" which... given the leadership of the state, isn't even an unfair critique.

They also blame every natural disaster on the rest of America.

[–] trublu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Mmm, sometimes they blame the gays.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

That's actually Kansas, but Kansas might as well be Texas Concentrate.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

The fuck you talking about? The second pic is us anytime someone shits on us or our family. Please Daddy Teddy, abandon us just one more time for a natural disaster! We’re so close!!!!

[–] dutchkimble@lemy.lol 4 points 13 hours ago

I’m not from the US and speaking about other countries too, not just the US. We became countries from kingdoms at a certain time for all of us. Somehow, states were formed either after or before from the kingdom period or whatever names they were called. It seems we are moving to a time when the states or provinces or whatever would like more say than the country. Do you think we will evolve to an EU like system or some other new system over the course of time, making the concept of countries or federal/central “rule” obsolete and instead moving to a more alliance between these localised states/provinces a system?
