I was a "Reddit is Fun" user for at least a decade

The impression I had of the US election based on it was completely out of line with reality

I've largely switched to Lemmy for the past two years, but this was really the last nail in the coffin for reddit for me too. It's an enforced echo-chamber and no longer a reliable source of information. It's hard to notice how bad things are when the politics are leaning in your direction, but once you see it, you can't unsee it, and it feels gross.

Lemmy is obviously pretty politically homogeneous too, but the difference is that I don't feel like someone is trying to trick me. Topics and and sources are clearly influenced by the individual posters' opinions, but it doesn't feel like there's a coordinated behind-the-scenes effort to push an agenda, which makes for a better vibe.

It's been cycling through my PC's wallpaper folder for years. I always seem to read something new when it pops up again.

Lots of engineers probably got their start by taking random things apart and breaking them as a kid too. Clocks, radios, etc.

It's the social media equivalent of supporting a bunch of Mom and Pop shops (or opening your own!) vs some hyper-sanitized, corporate monstrosity like Wal-Mart.

Determine if the relationship is having a negative impact on you, then either 1) assess why it's hurting you and if there's anything to adjust about how you're processing it, or 2) protect your mental health by setting up the boundaries that you need, cutting off as a last resort.

Be cautious about asking this online though. People are tribal about politics and have zero investment in your IRL relationships, so you may see lots of rationalizing of cutting off a lifelong friend, family member, spouse, etc without much nuance. Only you have the proper perspective to determine what you'd be sacrificing and if it's a net positive.

I've been using one for the last couple of years, and same. I have a much better feel for what certain heart rates mean for me now - when I need to get moving, when I need to sit for a bit.
