“Alone.” Pfft. Do you think she was alone for the first 200 years of her life too?

Shut up, Elrond. Where was this certainty when all you had to do was kick Isildur into the pit to save the entire fucking world?

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 12 points 10 hours ago

It wasn't in his nature to cut corners.

We only saw half the story, the regret. He had motives for not doing it, we just didn't see them because we didn't need to.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

There's absolutely no way that could have happened. While Sauron was defeated on the slopes of Orodruin, the movie scene where Isildur and Elrond climb to the ledge of the fires isn't in the books.

Elrond recounts what happened that day to Boromir, much later:

Isildur took it, as should not have been. It should have been cast then into Orodruin’s fire nigh at hand where it was made. But few marked what Isildur did. He alone stood by his father in that last mortal contest; and by Gil-galad only Círdan stood, and I. But Isildur would not listen to our counsel.

‘“This I will have as weregild for my father, and my brother,” he said; and therefore whether we would or no, he took it to treasure it. But soon he was betrayed by it to his death; and so it is named in the North Isildur’s Bane. Yet death maybe was better than what else might have befallen him.

There's no way Elrond could have picked up a grieving Isildur who is holding his dead father, carried him kicking and screaming, and yeeted him off the precipice.

Imagine, in the hour of such a pyrrhic victory, with Gil'galad and Elendil bodies still warm after their sacrifice, trying to murder the new High King of the Dúnedain and, technically, the ruler of both Arnor and Gondor over having claimed a ring? That's a whole new war right there between what human and elven armies were still standing...

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

That would have been a rather short book.

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see it seeded in the Tolkien's world for times after LotR, but having no great evil to cooperate against would put a lot of alliances to the test before they'd learn how to live in peace. This may take a lot of pages if not tomes.

A Song of Ice and Fire, basically.

Anon's making it sound like this isn't something that's been touched on many times before in fantasy. They even used an image of Marcille, a character traumatized by the loss of her human father and living in fear of the knowledge that she will lose everyone else around her too.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

I'm pretty sure they're literally talking about Marcille's motivations in the manga

[–] Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone 31 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

elf wife suffers and mourns you for hundreds of years alone

Even still, you don't get to choose for her whether or not she's allowed to love someone she knows she will have to say goodbye to eventually. For all you know those sixty years she spent with you might be a precious memory that makes that long life worth living.

I love my wife more than anything. Even if I knew I was going to outlive her by centuries I would still choose her Every. Single. Time. The memories I've made with her are that precious. I don't think I even have words for how upset I'd be at someone trying to say that we shouldn't be together because I'm going to massively outlive her.

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 minutes ago

This is 4chan, women's feelings were never part of the equation.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 28 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Mass Effect Asari: “I’ll miss you and I will always be a mother to your children but I’m going to remarry inside five years.”

Mass Effect Humans: “Deal.”

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

I mean Asari children are pretty much just clones of the mother with some personality traits from the other partner thrown in.

spend the day planning a meal, go shopping, spend hours cooking, tomorrow that food will be shite flushed down the toilet. why even bother

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 hours ago

Who's forcing you to flush!?

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I love how everyone is assuming that anon is saying that's why not to have an elven waifu. So wholesome.

Being a 4chan post, there's a pretty big chance that this is someone explaining why they get off to elven waifus.

This post is about Marcille's motivation in Dungeon Meshi. Like this is literally her reason for going into the dungeon, she wants to learn how to unify the races' lifespans so that she won't be forced to outlive the people she loves

Dunmeshi spoilers

This is exacerbated by the fact that >!she's a half-elf, so her lifespan is like half that of an elf, but still more than twice that of any other human race. She'll either outlive her loved ones by hundreds of years, or be outlived by them by hundreds of years.!<

Alternatively, it's 4Chan so the odds the OP this post was responding to was asking "Why wouldn't you want a Hot Elven Waifu?" are also pretty high specifically because of the "I could have a Legal Loli Waifu" angle.

"The more you hurt at the parting... the more it proves the depth of your love. And if you always fear sorrow... you'll never be able to love at all." — Belldandy, a literal goddess who'll live longer than any knife-eared tree hugger.

Also tell your whyfoo and her folks that I'll keep cutting trees, goblinite does not drop charcoal and I need it for steel. If they keep whining I'm going to open the circus and unleash the clowns on them, not even Frieren and Fern would be able to get rid of all of them. I am not joking, I'm going to open the circus! ~~And butcher some mermaids for the bones.~~

Now shoo. I'm not listening to them babbling about a ring to be destroyed, or how they're taking Chilchuck to Isengard-gard-gagagagard-gard or whatever. Nor should you. Touch grass, even if you're isekai'd.

Hey, cool PFP with the PHP composer

[–] Maestro@fedia.io 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I'm a PHP dev, and a band director. I thought it fitting 😄

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Oh cool! Am also a PHP dev :3

And I used to play Tenor Sax in a wind ensemble ~w~

[–] Maestro@fedia.io 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

...are you a rock climber / boulderer too by chance?

Once I thought I had pretty uncommon hobbies but then I read somewhere that playing music and bouldering are like the two top hobbies for developers 😄 Apparently they all tickle the same parts of the brain

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I actually used to go bouldering fairly frequently for a while when I was younger LMAO.

But I haven't done it in almost a decade...

[–] SorteKanin@feddit.dk 10 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

"That's fucking why" - why what? I don't get it. What "why" question is anon answering?

Seems to me it's "Why wouldn't you want a hot Elven Waifu?" most likely.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

Presumably answering a question about why that particular elf does the things she does in Dungeon Meshi, since unifying the race's lifespans is her goal

[–] uSeRnAmE396@lemmy.world -4 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

This is why he’s not getting the elf girls.

He made some mental gymnastics to justify why this won’t happen in reality.

Something something … incel culture …

I’m laughing at the idea that this person believes (or wants to believe ) that :

after he will be with the elf girl then, after he will die, the elf girl need to mourn after him for hundreds of years …

Like some kind of delusion that he is sooo good, and no other man can raise to this level, that will justify the hundreds years mourning.

Narcissistic fuck!

[–] I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

ELVES AREN'T REAL!

[–] uSeRnAmE396@lemmy.world 8 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

This makes no sense to me.

It makes sense only to people who believe in delusional “forever after” and in the idea that once you loved( or been with someone) that’s it ! That person is not allowed and can never love or be with someone else.

What a pile of reduced monkeigh logic.

[–] Macchi_the_Slime@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

Even if you believe that, the idea that losing you would be such torture as to outweigh any good of being with you is utter bullshit. And even if you think it would, you don't get to make that choice for someone else!

My wife recently got diagnosed with a small tumor on her pituitary gland. Her health already wasn't the best, and she's a week shy of exactly 5 years older than me. So I already knew I was most likely going to outlive her. But even if you told me I was going to outlive her by literally hundreds of years you would never catch me choosing not to be with her for however long I get. I'd choose to be with this woman every single time.

If she died tomorrow it would destroy me. But it's precisely because it will hurt me so much that I'm going to cherish every single moment I have with her for as long as I have her. And when the time does come to say goodbye I'm going to live on carrying those memories with me for however much longer I have before I join her wherever it is we go when this is all over. Because I know that she would want me to be happy in the time I have without her.

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard

[–] altkey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 hours ago

Happy Anon have not experienced many deaths in their circle and is in the fever dream of a teenage maximalism. Ngl it's sweet to be them.

[–] starman2112@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

Has nobody here read Dungeon Meshi? This post seems to be literally about Marcille's specifically
