Damn I've only tried 1 out of 6, no wonder I feel terrible.

[–] Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I abandoned my dreams and all it did was make me too depressed to do the other 5 things on the list.

[–] artifex@piefed.social 8 points 3 days ago

At least you tried.

Stop observing objective reality

Man, no wonder I'm interested in buying a vr headset, the reality just disappoints me

[–] DrDystopia@lemy.lol 11 points 3 days ago

As soon as I get my hands on a proper VR rig, I'm outta here for good.

Enjoy reality, losers!

[–] Pazuzu@midwest.social 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

this is depression talking. don't delude yourself into thinking you're an objective realist when you're incapable of feeling joy. there's plenty to be miserable about, but if you feel miserable about everything in life and find joy in nothing that's called anhedonia and is a genuine mental disorder.

[–] misteloct@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've lived this lifestyle and felt this way all the time. When I left my toxic job I stopped feeling that way. Sometimes it's not a mental health disorder and just our shitty society.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago

Yes, but the point is you can always do something about it. It has a cause that you can fix.

Money problems can be solves by lowering your consumption. Medical debt can be solved by moving to a country that does care about its citizens. Awful work can be solved by starting unions or going to a different company. Even if it doesn't do much, it is at least something.

Just doing nothing and complaining will never solve any problem.

Or you can reincarnate in Finland 🤷‍♂️

[–] hazl@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is Finland still a utopia? I used to fantasise about moving there, but lately I've been hearing about wage stagnation and cost of living increases that somewhat dent the overall happiness score.

Finland never recovered from the 2008 financial crisis, and covid + the end of trade with russia has damaged the economy badly and made public debt balloon heavily. Right now unemployment is about 10%, the 2nd highest in the EU, and the far-right coalition goverment that won the last election is trying to privatize healthcare and disempower unions.

The education system has been getting worse for about the past 15-20 years due to misguided reform attempts (and of course endless budget cuts)

Finland's birth rate dropped below replacement levels about 50 years ago and has been in freefall for about the last 10 years, and now the population pyramid is starting to be in really bad shape, which means the economic situation is likely just going to get worse and worse.

The retirement savings system is designed like a (partial) ponzi scheme due to aforementioned population dynamics, and participation is mandatory so it is effectively a hidden tax on all workers. Due to old people having the majority of the votes, it's the one thing that is immune from budget cuts, which forces the government to sell publicly owned infrastructure and dismantle public services in a futile effort to compensate.

So ends another fantasy. Thank you for this exceptionally well written bucket of ice water.

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm doing a combination of 3 to 6.

[–] FalseTautology@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Not gonna lie, ever since I lost my mind for a week in 2008 I've been having a pretty great time. I'm one of the only people I know.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Ugh, I hate these doomerisms. They don't add anything to life. Just make everyone more miserable than they already are.

You CAN do stuff. You DON'T have to just sit there and take it.

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I find my therapy actually had a negative effect on my happiness, with sanity I see how things really are.

They suck

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Could always try, like... Fixing them?

Or drugs?

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Oh, I wish I could fix them..

Ya know I was watching one of those Atheist Debunk Christians Youtube shows and God, that was a mistake.

I hate them, not because I'm a Christian or anything like that. I'd like to believe in God, an all-loving, all-knowing power of the universe looking out for me, trying to keep me on the right path, and plans on rewarding me with eternal life in Paradise. That all sounds really good, but first the guy has to be real, and since he isn't he can't. Unless he is and I don't know it, Stranger Things have happened, you can go onto Netflix and see em.

But because so many of these Atheists think that they're the smartest fucking people in the world, and they're not afraid of acting like it. As if all there was to the scientific method was running into Church, seeing the statue of Jesus on the Cross, and yelling "FAKE!"

Usually if they're talking about something that isn't the Bible, they can get a lot right. If they are talking about the Bible, it's more hit or miss. I find a lot of the time they cite passages without really understanding their historical or allegorical context. Like one guy claimed the whole bible could be debunked because the Old Testament claims that a bat is a bird. When looking at the context will tell you that the passage was translated from a text that didn't have a word for "bird", and instead meant something like "flying creature"

Most embarrassing fucking thing I'd ever seen. Keep in mind, I don't believe in the Bible, you can agree with someone's point (The Bible's myths are likely works of fiction), without agreeing with how they got there (It says bats are birds, at a time when the word bird didn't fucking exist)

Now I'm not saying the Bible is true, it's a really old fucking text that can be hard to decipher when you actually believe in that shit. I'm saying it's easy to be lazy.

So this guy was debunking this dude who claimed to have the highest IQ ever recorded, and his main arguments were that the dude believed in God and wasn't rich. He kept going on and on about how having a high IQ is just the key to immediate success and how everyone who's ever been smart has been intelligent. Even repeated the myth of Bill Gates being a self-made man (lol no) and just kept going on and on about how nothing stops smart people from getting rich.

I'm smart myself, but I'm poor, I've been weighed down by disability, lack of opportunity, living in a rural area, etc.

One of my best friends is a doctor of mathematics, he's firmly middle class and has issues with finances all the fucking time.

Tons of people are smart, but that doesn't automatically translate to wealth. I had to ponder what kind of shit this guy was on, maybe he was one of those dudebros who was rich himself and just assumed hard work did that? Maybe he wasn't smart but was envious of smart people? Dunno

Now did the guy he was doing a video ever recorded have the highest IQ ever recorded? To be honest I'm not sure, I'd guess not because sources are flaky, they exist, but they're a little sus. So gun to my head, I'd say now. But what I do know is that his wealth and belief in God were not valid reasons for doubting his IQ.

Now there were other things, like how the guy talked in word salad, was wrong about basic science facts, and looked up to Trump. Those were moreso valid reasons for doubting his IQ, but then again not really since Dr. Ben Carson has a high IQ, and he talks in word salads, is wrong about basic science facts, and looks up to Trump.

Isn't IQ more a measure of how fast you take in information, not what information you know? Anyways...

My point is, reality sucks and if I know one thing it's that no matter what card you're dealt, you're going to be in a situation where you are without power and can do nothing, yet will be blamed for it regardless. Because none of us want to deal with the reality that everything is fucked, and there's little we can do about it. So we lie and say the victim must somehow be at fault.

There are no heroes, there are only villains and their victims.

Don't ask me what I'm doing to save the world. The world is beyond saving.

The only problems I have can be solved by mentally erasing my cringiest memories, leaving my purple state for a blue one, and making more money. The second can't be done because the third isn't being done.

[–] outhouseperilous@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

can't be fixed

Drugs tiiiiiiime!

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm already on drugs. Flouxetene Risperdone and Methelphenadyte

None of those seem that fun.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 0 points 2 days ago

The world isn't fucked, it is the place you live that is fucked.

You are surrounded by fundamental Christians. And even though it is the biggest religion, most Christians don't act like that. But let me guess, you live in the US? Because there they do. That doesn't mean this it is indicative to the rest of the world.

You will always find villains doing villainy shit. Shitty people exist.

But the majority are not shitty. They just try to live their lives just like you do.

If the majority were shitty, the world would already have been doomed by nuclear bombs, the hole in the ozone layer would have encapsulated the world, the acid rain would have killed all food and we would live in a Mad Max scenario.

See the sparkle of hope that people spread and try to add to it in a positive way.

... and stop observing objective reality

[–] InnerScientist@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

It has really helped with my stress

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

"objective" reality.

Just because it sucks where you live doesn't mean it sucks everywhere. Do something about it instead of just complaining.
