Movie version: Thousands of pages of perfectly redacted and edited papers come out, and one tiny detail leads to unraveling of the entire conspiracy, reveals the perpetrators, and brings down an entire corrupt empire.

Reality: Everything is so blatantly incompetently being doctored in broad daylight - like a child claiming he didn't eat the cookies while in the process of eating the cookies, that everyone is actually too stunned by the absurdity to do anything.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 18 points 21 hours ago

Not too stunned. They think they will get some of the cookie crumbs falling in the carpet. Like the dog.

It's kayfabe. Blindboy (Irish musician) explains it well here with Ash Sarkar (English journalist/activist):

The sitting president of the United States of America is a child rapist.

And conservatives are rallying behind that child rapist.

[–] chaogomu@lemmy.world 30 points 18 hours ago

Conservativism itself says that everyone is part of a strict social hierarchy, and that those above have complete power over those below.

Which makes the "ideology" incredibly attractive to a certain type of predator.

The letter was postmarked “just days after Epstein died” in 2019, according to the progressive media company MeidasTouch. It was addressed to Larry Nassar, the convicted serial sex offender who was sentenced to 60 years in prison for abusing hundreds of children and young women.

In the alleged letter, Epstein addresses Nassar as “L.N.,” and makes a startling reference to “our president,” which would have been Trump at the time it was allegedly written.

“As you know by now, I have taken the ‘short route’ home. Good luck! We shared one thing… our love & caring for young ladies at the hope they'd reach their full potential,” the letter reads.

“Our president shares our love of young, nubile girls. When a young beauty walked by he loved to ‘grab ------,’ whereas we ended up snatching grub in the mess halls of the system. Life is unfair. Yours, J. Epstein”

The redacting marker probably ran out ink...

“Our president shares our love of young, nubile girls.

barf

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 26 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

The full potential part was the worst. Sick reflection on how these groomers think they're doing something good for these girls. Also the life isn't fair part. ... Yeah, for the thousands of lives you destroyed permanently. Rot in hell kid fucking monsterous piece of shit.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago

It’s definitely unfair that nasser and Epstein got jail time while trump didn’t. Only one way to fix that now

Probably couldn’t ctrl-f an image and they were too dumb to transcribe it.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago

It's teacher handwriting, which is alien script to them.

His indication that he took the “short route” home implies he wrote the letter before committing suicide. It certainly implicates Trump, but the conspiracy theorists will not be happy.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 30 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

If he did, why the hell would they go through all the trouble of claiming the tapes were lost, then releasing obviously doctored footage, and putting out some shitty animation passed as the real thing? Seems like it would have been unnecessary.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 19 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I believe he was on suicide watch. The prison guards would have been implicated as complicit if the whole thing was on camera.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 26 points 22 hours ago

Well, yeah. He was on suicide watch, but also right before he was to testify, just happened he was given a bit of time where the prison guards left him alone, and the tapes “stopped” recording. Assisted or not that’s at best negligence and coincidence, at worst actively complicit and planned.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Suicide vs assisted suicide?

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 11 points 22 hours ago

I’d think so too. I doubt he had much choice in the matter.

[–] Heikki2@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

To try and seem not as incompetent as they are. He was supposed to be on suicide watch

[–] naeap@sopuli.xyz 12 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

How should he have written the letter after the assumed suicide?

[–] RunningInRVA@lemmy.world 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Who said that he did? It was postmarked after his death.

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

His indication that he took the “short route” home implies he wrote the letter before committing suicide

You said this, lol. Like there's another time he could have written it.

I've always leaned toward suicide over assassination.

The assasination scenario is very Hollywood, but everyone in this administration is pretty incompetent and it would be pretty ballsy for someone with access to Epstein to do it. It's just not as likely as suicide, when the guy was looking at being behind bars for eternity.

Doesn't in any way imply Donald Trump isn't a child rapist though.

Holy hell. Black highliter, again. 3 days ago I mentioned I was able to do this with some Slovakian censored documents, and here I see it again.

Perhaps it's intentional this time. "Oops, my bad!"

[–] rebelsimile@sh.itjust.works 11 points 18 hours ago

I’m surprised someone hasn’t spooked the entire right wing with “we fed the epstein files into ChatGPT to unredact them”, they all (especially in trump’s circle) act like they believe it could do that.

[–] grinde@sh.itjust.works 5 points 18 hours ago

Oh wow. I looked at the raw contents of a couple pdfs, but those ones were done properly so I just assumed it was a dead end.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 37 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I expected incompetence would end up releasing some of what wasn't intended to be released. Now we have this, and the poorly "redacted" PDF files.

I wonder how much more will come from this.

I also wonder if it was a mistake at all.

[–] RunningInRVA@lemmy.world 36 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Trump isn’t referenced by name. The AI scanner probably missed it. This letter almost appears as if it was expressly written to implicate Trump.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 23 hours ago

So it was a plant by Biden to both implicate trump AND cover up the murder of friend of the president Jeffrey Epstein. How diabolical!

It is written in cursive. Their automated system probably couldn't read it

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I've been somewhat avoiding the news (for my sanity), but I have heard that some of the PDFs turned out to be badly redacted and the original text is accessible programmatically. Do you happen to have a link to one? I'm a developer and have worked with PDFs extensively in the past. I'd love to delve into one and un-redacted it.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 24 points 23 hours ago

Do these people really think people aren't downloading and archiving everything they release immediately? Incompetent morons.

[–] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

His body guard did say after he died: "He had help to do that." Or something like that.

I still don't think he chose to do it

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

I mean...all the evidence points to a different direction before we even knew about this. You can see the postage date on the item here.

[–] nocturne@piefed.social 9 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Did the story get pulled from raw story? The only thing loading from the link for me is the comments.

[–] Eryn6844@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

i can't see anything either. is there an archive?

[–] just_another_person@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Loads for me in a lean browser. Unsure. Maybe your ad blocker is getting a bit overzealous?

[–] nocturne@piefed.social 2 points 23 hours ago (4 children)

I opened it the link in a browser with no adblocking and the same thing.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

Loads fine for me. Maybe their servers were taking a beating when you tried?
