Recently stopped caring about removing the shells on shrimp and I just eat them with the shell on.

Does anyone else do this?

i knew a guy making a million a year by buying shrimp shells from a food processor for practically nothing and grinding them into dust and selling them as protein powder for gym dudes for $40/bottle.

It's got the Cadmium bodies crave.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, would it work as protein powder?

[–] Num10ck@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

it is protein, and it sold like crazy. i cant speak to it being a good idea or quality.

[–] FeelzGoodMan420@eviltoast.org 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your body has a hard time digesting them so it will likely give you a hell of a stomach ache/bad shits if you keep doing that. Just take them off man.

Noted, I haven't actually experienced any issues personally but I'll monitor for any abnormalities. Dropping carbs has actually been amazing on my digestive system.

I have only tried eating the tails of fried shrimp but I have never had any stomach issues for years caused by this. It does have the bonus of grossing out my kids when I do it.

When it's crispy fried shrimp, yes. Any other time, no.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

It never occurred to me that the shells would be edible. I mean, I don't eat clam or oyster shells.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Just due to texture alone, shrimp and other crustacean shells are a hard pass for me.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

No. I did switch to eating larger shrimp so there’s less work involved.

There are ways of cooking shrimp that break the shell down to the point that it’s more like crispy salmon skin.

That's kinda when I said ascrew it and just ate the shell. It was some Chinese style shrimp with the heads still on. Took the head off and my fingers were so messy, I just couldn't be bothered peeling the whole thing so I just ate it and haven't stopped since.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 1 points 22 hours ago

But the head is delicious.

No, but I do something similar. I eat corn on the cob without unwrapping the husk.

[–] Lexam@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

They can be used for flavoring but I would not eat the shells.

Yea sure. I eat the banana peels too. Idk why people look at me like I'm a weirdo.

I'm always worried about cutting my tongue on the shells, though that worry mainly surfaces when eating sushi. They can be sharp, and the tongue does not seem like a fun place for a paper cut.

[–] Kojichan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I suspect it's like eating your fingernails or hair.

But, tactical dot!

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 3 points 1 day ago

Only if they're small and fried

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I don't, because it would require a trip to the hospital. Ain't allergies fun?

But they're not exactly easy to digest anyway, and how they're cooked matters to the people I know that do eat them

[–] Late2TheParty@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I, too, many years ago got tired of the process of removing shells and now just crush 'em shell on. It's been about a decade and no issues thus far.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I have been encouraged/peer pressured to eat shrimp with the tails on. I declined and ripped them off.

[–] TheDeadlySquid@lemm.ee 3 points 21 hours ago

Shrimp tails if they’re fried.

[–] mvilain@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

When I make Scampi, I use the shells to make a shrimp stock to cook the shrimp and butter. Broiling jumbo shrimp with Bay's Seasoning in the shell means I take the shell off before eating it.

[–] Fiivemacs@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'll take stock in that idea.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 2 points 19 hours ago

Depends on how they are cooked. I hate popcorn because I always end up with little bits of hull Stu k in my throat. Same goes for shrimp. If it's cooked well enough that that doesn't happen, I'm fine to eat them

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 1 points 19 hours ago

Yes, and tails too depending on how difficult it is to eat them.

[–] xman080@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

For small shrimp yes to save time but for larger shrimps no
