Hey!

There's some things I am planning on ordering, and I'd like to get them delivered without my parents knowing.

The things in question are some 23w CFL bulbs, e27 sockets, PC fans and a power strip.
I was originally planning on just buying them in person, but literally no shops near me have them.

I can't actually find them anywhere but the american version of amazon -- my country's (Ireland) version of amazon doesn't have them.

I asked a few friends if I could send the things to their house, and get it through them, but all of them said no.

Don't try growing weed at your parent's house or with a 23w CFL bulb.

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 days ago (8 children)

It is possible but the stank will fill the whole house and they will notice the spike on the electric bill. Hiding the package is the easy part.

Really? that's what the guide I'm following told me to do (on the bulb)

[–] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Must be an old guide, then. LEDs have surpassed CFLs a while ago. Also don't underestimate the smell when it starts flowering. Even if you grow it outside, it will stink up your whole neighborhood. Is weed legal where you are?

Do you have collection lockers for parcel firms near you

The smell is gonna give you away. You'd be better off growing mushrooms.

LOL your parents' house is going to reek of weed. You will get caught. Grow outdoor in a hidden place or wait until you get your own apartment.

[–] __siru__@discuss.tchncs.de 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And here I was being confused why some person's parents would get so angry at them for buying computer parts from their own money. I see I was not cultured enough to understand the true question at hand.

Does Amazon have the same kind of delivery boxes at grocery stores and such over there as they do here in the US?

[–] throwaway@lemmy.cafe 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not that I'm aware of, or any that were surfaced by google.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

It's a delivery option during checkout.

"Free local pick up" and then you can select a locker location. These are Amazon branded lockers.

Are you aware of the difference in mains voltage between Ireland and USA?

Start ordering stuff from aliexpress and hide the packages in the onslaught.

[–] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If you are not in a position to do it properly, it's not worth doing over just buying weed.

It's not just about yield, even if you're comfortable with a very low yielding harvest, but your quality will suffer and the genetics will not reach their full potential without the right things.

The CFLs don't have enough of a broad spectrum to support a lot of good growth, and you'll end up with low quality results with a low yield. Not to mention any tent is likely to make some noise, from the extraction fan and a fan for circulating air around, and even with an extraction fan for good bud if you're trimming outside of the tent it WILL stink up your house something fierce.
Not to mention your parents would get suspicious of the constant visits to your room, as your learning to maintain good VPD etc.

Airflow being important if you don't want mold.

Anyone can grow weed, but it takes some effort to grow good weed. It would be wise to consider this once you have your own place to do so, it's worth the wait and you can easily pull 3-4+ ounces per plant (in dry weight) under a 200w LED with the right gear, but the CFLs will be weaker and probably net you under an ounce in dry weight.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Making me wanna grow weed over here.

[–] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

It's quite satisfying. I grew a very colourful cultivar this time around, and I'm sampling it right now (Blood Diamonds 2.0).

Once you have things dialed in, environment wise, there is great benefit in being able to choose genetics (be wise to find reputable breeders however, and steer clear of white label seeds as well).
There are just so many flavours and variations people growing for an illegal market do not have the patience for. I mean I had to push these until 11 weeks in flower until they were ripe enough to chop! Well worth it though, and I recommend anyone in the position to try it to give growing a shot.

Have your parcels addressed to Poste Restante; ie: care of the post office. Should be a free service. Go in once a week with ID and ask if they have mail for you.

*General Delivery in the US.

[Name]
GENERAL DELIVERY
[City, State ZIP]

Be certain the post office you select provides general delivery services.

I use this a lot.

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 9 points 3 days ago

This is the way. I do this for expensive/big items I don't want left by my front door at the mercy of porch pirates. Called Flex Delivery here but same thing.

[–] jaek@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The hardest part will be hiding the light/smell/sound.

As an aside, one of my housemates was dealing out of our house (unbeknownst to me) and we wound up getting raided.

It was awful, Id seriously reconsider growing secret plants at home unless you're okay with the possibilty of pigs fucking up your parents/siblings rooms.

Sounds like a good time to start collecting orchids.

I ORDERED AN XBOX CARD

Mother: It looks like a bong

[–] proti@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hmm, do you have pack stations? Also some stores here allow you to pick up small packages as a delivery option

[–] TootSweet@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Came here to mention the business pickup option. That's a thing in the U.S., at least. No idea about Ireland, but I think when you order something, you can tell Amazon you want to pick it up at a CVS or a Staples or whatever. And then when it's ready, you just go there in person and pick it up.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hiding the delivery of the equipment seems the least of your problems. Where are you planning on setting this up that you could hide it? Power consumption? Whatever this project is, if you live at home and can't tell your parents about it, how do you expect to hide it?

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 days ago

I'd say no too. I don't fully know your situation, but based on what information you've provided, I worry you're blindly following a guide without thinking through the possible end game. If that's true, I worry that you're going to get caught and you're going to get in a hell of a lot of trouble.

[–] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Do you have a neighbor who well let you borrow their address?

[–] axexrx@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Old-school way we used to do it was find a house no one was living in and order it to there, but usually that was for stuff that was illegal.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I have read that this is actually a bad idea because the post office people know which addresses are vacant and know that it's likely an illegal package because lots of people have that idea.

[–] axexrx@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Maybe its outdated. Worked really well in the 00s. Also though, I live in a seasonal town. So like 75% of houses were empty during the fall and winter, and wed do it then.

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 4 points 3 days ago

There's no way to guarantee a delivery date so there's no way to guarantee your parents won't be home. Getting a PO box might work.

But I just wanna say I think what you're trying to do is a bad idea. Not judging, just don't want you to get in trouble.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

You need to keep in mind that everything on the internet is surveiled these days, and there is a strong possibility that your local police department will find out about you buying these things. You can get in serious trouble like years in prison trouble with years of probation and fees after you get out, and prison and probation is not a good place to be. If you are going to sell weed, you need to evaluate the cost benefits analysis of this. How much money do you honestly expect to make to balance the huge risk you are taking? Selling slightly above the cost is not worth it. If you are going to sell weed then you probably should try to make a lot of money off of it and then quit while you are ahead. This can maybe make the risk worth it if you value your limited years on this earth in money. Personally I'd rather just work a normal job, and just buy weed. It's extremely cheap. I don't smoke anymore but the amount of weed id have to grow to make this a rational decision was not something I was willing to do. Also I don't want to live in prison for years eating bologna sandwiches made by drug addicts. Prisons are disgusting and horrible places.

[–] throwaway@lemmy.cafe 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't plan on selling it, I'd just like to try and grow some.

I've looked into it, and the penalties for it aren't that harsh here.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago

Maybe but if you have more than a certain amount and if you are selling it then you will get trafficking charges and in most places that is serious jail time. Spending years in jail won't just destroy your mind, but also your immune system and everything else.

[–] FRYD@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

If you’re in the US, you should get the number for your post office and ask about doing a parcel intercept. I believe you’ll need ID that puts you at the address like a license.
