President Trump says he may send National Guard to New Orleans next instead of Chicago "We're making a determination now," Trump said in the Oval Office to reporters. "Do we go to Chicago or do we go to a place like New Orleans?" Portrait of Joey GarrisonJoey Garrison USA TODAY

President Donald Trump suggested he may not send National Guard troops into Chicago as he's repeatedly threatened, and for the first time introduced a potential new target for his next crime crackdown: New Orleans.

One day after he declared, "We're going in" about plans for Chicago, Trump on Sept. 3 said his administration still hadn't decided whether he would deploy troops to the nation's third-largest city. Trump instead pointed to New Orleans, a city in a Republican-led state, in contrast to Democratic-led Illinois.

"We're making a determination now," Trump said in the Oval Office to reporters. "Do we go to Chicago or do we go to a place like New Orleans, where we have a great governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to straighten out a very nice section of this country that's become quite, you know, quite tough, quite bad"?

"So, we're going to be going to maybe Louisiana," Trump added.

Fuuuuck. So once again I am guessing he's going with the path of least resistance bc our governor would literally burn us to the ground if Trump asked him to show his loyalty. I have no no doubt he would let Trump use us to test out any authoritarian bullshit requested.

Meanwhile, I believe Trump lost a lawsuit yesterday with California and I know Chicago's mayor and governor were both making plans and preparations to resist occupation. So again this will be a very easy way to signal he's doing something.

BTW, in addition to already having a private nonprofit surveillance company that works with NOPD and LSP (and already set up the only live tracking facial recognition surveillance system of its kind in the U.S. with no notice or input to the public) the National Guard will be New Orleans 4th official branch of city dedicated law enforcement:

NOPD

Louisiana State Police (LSP) branch Troop Nola was permanently established in the city last year by Governor Landry almost as soon as he took office.

And if you have anything like a car wreck, you have to deal with a private company the city contracts out to called On Scene Services (OSS)

All I've heard since Troop Nola was established is how much crime is down and we should be grateful for their presence. But apparently that has suddenly changed and we need to add a 4th (in addition to ICE and official ICE State police partners who may already be using the facial recognition surveillance tracking system with zero oversight.

LA mayor, black woman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Bass

DC mayor, black woman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriel_Bowser

Chicago mayor, black man https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Johnson

Baltimore mayor, black man https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandon_Scott

New Orleans mayor, black woman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Bass

What a very odd coincidence. Every city he wants to deploy troops to happens to have black leadership. So strange. I wonder why....

Spot the difference!

Hint: Republicans control the entire state government of Louisiana and will bow down to trump and his MAGAts. Democrats control the entire state government of Illinois and will fight back.

My guess is that trump wanted to do Chicago, but he just just the Los Angeles Posse Commitatus lawsuit and Illinois is fighting back. Going for New Orleans means that the mayor there will be on his own, so there's less pushback and more opportunity to push the envelope.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 19 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe they need more opportunities to normalize sending National Guard troops into cities. LA was met with lawsuits and protests. Chicago was likely going to be worse.

But if he does something like New Orleans now and maybe Memphis next, then when it comes to the next democratic city, it will be less likely to get news coverage. Cut to midterms next year, every city will have their elections “protected” by red state national guardsmen.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 10 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

They are setting precedents to use to declare martial law, 2028 in mind I presume.

The most worrying precedent is one that got little attention, federal judges being forbidden from issuing Nationwide injunctions. They could declare martial law, round up citizens and disappear them and we would be functionally unable to challenge it, if you somehow got a chance to file a lawsuit they could jam up the process indefinitely and it would not help anybody else. The courts believe the Republic is over and we are in an autocracy already. The politicians believe that. The lawyers believe it. It is just the citizens that are not all aware yet.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Your comment depressed me. I hope Americans don’t stand for this shit. Dems need to take the house in the midterm for any hope of changing this future.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 4 points 19 hours ago

We need to take the house to even have a chance of electing an opposition politician. If they control the house and the senate, and every other means of rigging the fails them, it is safe to presume they would use fake vote rigging projections and vote the presidency to their own guy.

To get to that point we would need a popular muscular opposition that we still are lacking though. They are going to try to force Gavin Newsom and offer zero real reform and weakly trust the courts to protect elections and fail the overwhelming majority and muscular politicking that would be needed. He would not meet the moment if he got in anyway, we need a restoration and a new deal.

On the plus side there will be a succession fight and an epic fight in the nest of Vipers for supreme leader so that could be our only chance to take it from them before it is rigged beyond recovery.

It would be the most attention this admin has paid, or will pay, to New Orleans.

TACO Trump folds to Chicago cause they stood up to him. Pay attention other cities, you don't have to just roll over!

Our governor is welcoming him with open arms. He literally made a post on his X account saying we welcome them with open arms across the entire state.

TACOs do seem like a good idea for dinner.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

Trump needed to get his goon squad to punch a bunch of black people on camera and Jeff Laundry was more willing to play ball than J.B. Pritsker.

I'm not looking forward to the Louisiana National Guard getting back into practice shooting black people trying to leave the Superdome twenty years after last time. I don't really consider slow rolling one of America's largest black cities until it looks like The West Bank any kind of win.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago

Hey, first of all, okay, they were black! And, y’know, suspicious! Probably escaping from something!

For those who don’t know also it was just regular cops, not the guard, but that was twenty years ago, before the mask-off fascism.

Heck, it’s probably the plan.

[–] zarathustra0@lemmy.world 20 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

So it's not an emergency? It's on a rota?

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Yea. They discovered that New Orleans’ public gardens and spaces are overrun with weeds; a problem that needs to fixed asap

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 18 points 20 hours ago

TACO knows Chicago ain't gonna mess around. A red state will roll over and show it's belly.

Still not detracting from: WHERE ARE THE EPSTEIN FILES, PEDOnald???

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 11 points 22 hours ago

Got to intimidate the blue states. Notice how he isn't sending his SA to Houston, one of the highest crime rates in the nation?

[–] Dogiedog64@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago
[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 10 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

Right but Trump is a liar. Nobody believes a word he says; this story is a waste of space. Of course he would say this to deflect from the bad news of targeting blue cities ... right before going into Chicago anyway.

And he's in the Epstein Files. Don't forget that.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 6 points 9 hours ago

Well, he may be chickening out. There's plenty of precedent for that.

Texas National Guard has already been staging troops and equipment ~~at Great Lakes.~~ I wonder who paid for that.

e:

Ah I got that quote wrong, however:

"We have reason to believe that the Trump Administration has already begun staging the Texas National Guard for deployment in Illinois."

This is the solution? Roll the military? And to what end? Forever? This is the solution to crime, bring in an army that is hand picked to be loyal only to Trump.

This is what you gt when you vote and have no brains.

[–] mateofeo85@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago

You misspelled riot.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Dems should lock down every city in similar ways so that it's only Republicans forced to see how useless it is to have the National Guard aimlessly wandering around the streets with weapons

[–] FlowVoid@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

What weapons? Illinois has very strict gun control, including an assault weapons ban.

There are exceptions for federal officers. But if Trump can't find a way to federalize the Texas Guard...

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

The Louisiana governor is receptive to it. Dumbass sycophant.

This really goes to show that this has shit to do with crime. It's just "what other state will I fuck over now? Who don't I like?

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

As long as you got a friendly governor and a city with enough black people, I'll launch a domestic "liberation" campaign.

- Trump, probably

[–] opus86@lemmy.today 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

There's a lot less black people in New Orleans than Chicago. I'm confused by this shift.
