I don't understand some people. Maybe it's the ADHD?

Like, I'll text them "Should I bring something to the party?"

They'll immediately reply, "Sure. How about wine?"

I'll immediately reply, "Cool. What kind?"

And then no answer. For hours.

I can only assume that they threw their phone in the river as soon as they sent their text message. Maybe it was overheating.

[–] Sprinks@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago

Thats how I text and it's 100% my adhd.

One thing that sometimes happens to me is that I receive a message right as I'm closing an app, meaning that it has just enough time for the notification to disappear but not enough time for me to actually see the message. Then I won't notice until I open the app again, which I usually don't do unprompted.

[–] brognak@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 50 minutes ago

Exactly this. I have missed semi important message this way. Signal seems to be particularly susceptible, not that I would blame them or call it a bug just a very weird niche case.

[–] sukhmel@programming.dev 1 points 26 minutes ago

I do this sometimes. After I reply, I don't expect another question maybe because I assume it would be in a single question otherwise. Then I return back to whatever I was doing and can often not notice any new messages ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On the other hand, I'm usually ok if you choose at your own discretion in such a case, I'm not the one to be picky if I failed to choose in the first place

It is possible that they disabled notifications appearing more than once every minute.

I too have this enabled, because I hate it when people send 5 consecutive messages instead of adding it all into one.

So now I can only get one notification per minute.

Next time try waiting 60 seconds before replying.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 4 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Do you immediately close the text app after sending the message? In the scenario I described, I'd see the "they are typing" indicator and then wait for their message.

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Not the sixty second guy but I do. Why would I look at it any longer?

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

If you're having a real time conversation, you'd see if they're typing back right away

[–] Demdaru@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Can check later though, whatevs. Minute or two won't change a thing.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 1 points 1 hour ago

Right. Unless you don't check for hours, as in my original post, and I end up getting a kind of wine you didn't like.

If I try to call my SO or my mother, I have less than 20% chance of an answer. I have no idea why they have cellphones.

[–] MagnyusG@lemmy.world 32 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

This is my whole family, they're glued to their phones whenever I'm around, but if I'm at work and I need to call one of them I have to ping pong all their phone numbers until one of them picks up, and even then sometimes they don't.

[–] BossDj@piefed.social 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

The trick is to send a text asking a simple question. Then once they answer, immediately reply "actually can I call to ask about it?"

[–] murvel@feddit.nu 0 points 5 hours ago

Good, now you've wasted both a call and a text

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

I have same damn issue and I pay for all the phones.

[–] debil@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Tbf, phone is just one app among dozens of others, and quite rarely used one, too.

[–] lurch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

Gotta open a ticket and schedule an appointment.

My wife has a sixth sense of knowing when I'm on the toilet.

I can quietly go about my day, no one ever calls or wants me .... enter the toilet, pull my pants down, in the process of doing my business and the phone rings. Not every time I go to the toilet ... but just about every time she calls, I'm on the toilet. It's uncanny.

Then she gets mad at me for not answering right away or ignoring the call. I always call her back and ask her how she knows when I'm on the toilet.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Same with my dad and sister, except she would only call if he was on a ladder or in heavy traffic or on hold, or otherwise unable to safely take a call.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 5 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

I ride motorcycle and I love that one. I have an adapter for the phone so I can keep the phone screen in front of me while I ride. I just never use it because I don't want to operate a device while I'm on a bike, no matter how sophisticated you can make it.

I just have it on in case of emergency.

But I can go for long quiet rides in the country side where nothing is happening and no one will ever call.

As soon as I'm in traffic, an intersection or somewhere busy where I need full attention .... someone decides to call and I can see my screen light up.

[–] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 4 points 18 hours ago

Holder+video call. Seeing Hanoi traffic or w/e makes people so much more appreciative of why I cant talk.

Just make sure you've got a good phone protector and really wrench that thing tight.

[–] killeronthecorner@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago

I also have this particular shitty superpower, but for the doorbell ringing

[–] Wolf314159@startrek.website 13 points 19 hours ago

I'm not making excuses for anyone, but I've accidentally done this. On my phone and messaging app, if I read a text and leave the conversation open (not exiting the thread and the app) I won't get any further notifications from that person no matter how much they text. I'm sure it's a setting somewhere, but the setting is dumb. Like, surely I don't want a bunch of pings when I'm actively conversing with someone and looking at the app, but leaving the thread open and the screen off "should" still get a notification, even if the app is open under my lock screen.

No. That makes it harder to remove the loot quietly.

A friend's husband keeps his phone on silent but also expects to be notified if plans change.

[–] ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago

Then he shall be silently notified

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 1 points 5 hours ago

So via text?

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

I thank the heavens my family is the opposite. If I call, they answer unless they actively can't (work, driving, emergency) and even then they'll text a quick 'busy' then call after!

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

My girlfriend constantly complains I never call her. But when I do in fact call her she has her phone on silent or don't disturb or not on her.

  • But you never call me because you just wanna talk a little.
  • I do but you never fucking answer.
