Yeah. People who get seriously into a game, but understand boundaries, can be a lot of fun. I’d go to watch parties for the people, not the game, and they made it more fun (even if it was just because I was laughing at them).
My abusive ex used to yell at the tv when his team would lose or do something stupid. His alcoholism only made it worse and he would often take his anger out on me.
I am sorry you had that experience. I wasnt going to reply to this thread but your comment got my mind going. If you are single now, I hope its how you want. And if you are in a new relationship, I hope it is the best it can be.
my step dad was the same way about sports and drinking and becoming abusive. To the point of physical violence directed at me and my mom.
I am a loud fan. I enjoy the passion that a good game can produce in me. I do yell at the TV sometimes. I am a season ticket holder for my local pro soccer team. I am seriously the loudest fan at one point of every game because I start a chant and everyone in the stadium hears me and responds. And I yell at the ref and opposing team all the time. Always in good fun and I try not to be personal. Mostly trying to get a laugh, get the other team on the wrong foot.
But I draw the line at abusive language.
I admit I drink too much sometimes and can be an asshole
BUT ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR DIRECTED AT A LOVED ON IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE.
FULL STOP
I think people are weirdly obsessed with sports. It's fine to enjoy them, but it's a fucking game. They need to calm down.
My brother is mostly fairly normal seeming, but he gets so unreasonably angry over games... doesn't matter if he's playing the game or someone else is. He doesn't like hurt anyone or take things out on others much, but he's definitely what I'd call a "sore loser". He knows it's one of his weaknesses too. I kind of wonder what causes this sort of thing. Definitely some latent anger issues.
I've always found it silly how so many men get angry at other men just kicking a ball around tbh
But they're in different uniforms. That's nearly the same as flying a flag.
Seems silly to me.
I can understand being disappointed when your favorite team loses. I can understand being really upset when the team YOU PLAY FOR loses. I don't understand getting pissed at people you'll never meet because they didn't play a game for your entertainment well enough.
Moreover, getting upset because the side you have arbitrarily selected to support isn't winning... How does one grow into adulthood and remain this silly?
It made even less sense when I lived in Cleveland. Most Browns fans should be used to not winning by now.
I watch competitive LoL and I'm not Asian: any close loss is a victory!
AFAICT, the outcome of the game has nothing to do with the athletes. It's based on how hard the fans hoped and prayed for their selected team to prevail. Other than that, it comes down to corruption and incompetence among the officials.
Don't forget lucky towels and underwear! One of those can change everything!!
An (American) football team my family follows used to have a coach that got so upset over plays and calls that he would advance onto the field gesticulating and screaming, causing the team to get penalties.
Did they council this guy to control himself? No. They got someone on staff to physically restrain him when he lost his mind. Like the kid's only job was to grab the coach by the belt-loops and keep him off the field.
I love this story because it's about a masculine man engaging in a masculine activity who cannot be expected to control his own hysterics. I keep it in my back pocket for when the "men are stoic, women are emotional" BS comes up.
I used to get upset watching and I realized it was ruining the fun. I took a step back and adjusted my thinking. My team losing is still frustrating, but I don’t yell at the TV or let it ruin my day.
Unless you have close friends or family members playing in the match, any heightened emotionality linked to sports is definitely a sign of shallowness and immaturity. And an angry sports fan? Pfff. My cat is more mature than them and she's a tortie!
I don't care for them
It's an interesting thought experiment to look at sports fans getting overly excited by people chasing a ball bouncing around like an anthropologist studying group behaviour in primates. I can't see them as anything other than gibbering apes after doing that.
Has nothing to do with sports, that's just the excuse to be a violent dick and assault and murder other people
After MAGA became a thing, probably better that they are angry about that.
