I honestly don't see how the average working class adult find that time. I feel like gaming is a luxury for rich/middle-class teens.

Yes, a bit at least. If your routine doesn't have any time for what you love, it's an extremely shitty situation.

I try to manage my work hours even if it hits income a bit.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Didn't really get to for ages, but with a steam deck it's doable to do it after the kid's in bed to play an hour or 2 of something. You definitely have to pick other types of games than the ones I used to play tho (FPS and RTS don't really work well with the Steam deck controls).

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

Yeah! Steamdeck makes it happen. Playing in short bursts and the ability to sleep the console is amazing. I hated having to sit at a desk and dedicate enough time until a save point to play. The anxiety of playing for 5 minutes and then having to quit because something came up made me not want to play at all.

Now, I game so much more than I used to.

[–] Nightsoul@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I work from home and have no kids, so yeah I have plenty of time.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I usually catch five or ten minutes here and there. So, no.

[–] MrIamsosmrt@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

I don't have kids so I still have plenty of free time that I could use to game. I get home from work at 5 pm and usually go to bed at 11 pm so thats 6 hours of free time during the work day. Of course some of that is used for housework and cooking but if I really want to I can game for 5 hours a day.

But often I just watch a TV show, movie or YouTube instead becauee I'm exhausted from work

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Plenty of time, but my wife and I have had kids yet

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Time? Sure, but I don't have the energy or focus.

It depends; if it's a game only I like, well, I bumblefuck my way through Baldur's Gate an hour at a time after the kids go to bed, when I'm not shit posting or attacking a side project or stargazing. If the rest of the family likes it, my job for the rest of the day is to sit the fuck down and play the game or else.

[–] nafzib@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah. What else would I do after work?

My friends play games together every night and I join them pretty often. I could game more if I wanted, but I’ve been losing interest. All of us are broke as hell, but no kids, no marriages.

I think pc spec creep will eventually leave us in a situation where we need to upgrade but can’t afford to and I’m not sure what we’ll do then.

[–] PurpleGameBoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Yes, no kids yet and only working 36 hours on average.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Weekend mornings I get up before everyone else in the house and usually have a few hours of quiet time with the Xbox before the chaos starts.

[–] damnthefilibuster@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I’m slow burning Skyrim on a second hand steam deck. The plan is to finish one play through in a few years and then start again with a different character.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't think I've ever actually finished a playthrough, my game saves always break before that.

I do but tbf I never wanted kids and WFH so I have a very good quality of life

[–] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I find myself playing games that involve exploration or retro arcade games. Missions and assigned side quests often feel like doing chores. I can follow a line on a map and get frustrated in real life.

That being said, I had a nice time playing Breath of the Wild and old arcade games were designed to take your quarters so they can be quick to play if you suck. Gradius doesn’t take me long to die in even with the Konami code.

Now much more selective with my time. have no patience for grind and fps’ seem samey.

I did make time for cyberpunk and bg3. Might fire up metaphor one day.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I don't play a dedicated video game setup, but I do play a merge game on my phone that's endless that I can whip out and do anywhere.

Yes. I don't have kids though. Also I work in games so I can persuade myself that I'm doing market research or whatever

[–] RacerX@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Yes but not as much as I used to. Please bring back cheat codes and easy difficulty mode so I can actually play these things without having to grind hours of my life away.

No, not really. Not for my own pleasure anyway. When I'm not working, helping my wife out keeping the house tidy and raising our kids, doing misc planning for the family, budgeting, and trying to just relax, I'm too tired to play games.

The only games I play are games with my kids, and even though it creates some fond memories, it kind of kills my enthusiasm for gaming in general. It's sort of like when your job is your hobby, usually the shine of that hobby wears off and it largely becomes a grind.

[–] ptc075@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Not really no. I make a point to game online a bit with my nephews on Friday nights. But the rest of the week - no, there's just too much that needs doing. In addition to working full time, cooking, and maintaining the home, now that I'm older I have also added making a point to get enough sleep and get my workouts in. That's it, that's all the time there is.

I purposely booked a week of vacation for my birthday this year where I intend to finally play Breath of the Wild. And that's it, that's the whole week. Looking forward to it.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I often play video games and then retroactively realize that I didn't really have time for it. I try to focus video game time around my kids so it's both video game time and kid time, but that severely limits what our options are.

[–] gointhefridge@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Not really. I got 2 kids. I sometimes have an hour a day to play. And even then it’s decision paralysis of what to play that I can get a satisfying enough session in the little time I have.

I have a steam deck and it’s handy, but I also have game pass and I’ve been wanting to play some gamepass games on it. So it becomes the decision paralysis of what do I play. I would love to play games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or Civilization or Cities Skylines but I don’t have that kind of time to dedicate to complete a FULL session anymore.

Lately is been Doom Dark Ages.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Barely, and only if I sacrifice sleep for it

[–] mwproductions@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I definitely don't have as much time as I'd like.

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Yes. I have lots of time but I do not have a kid yet. We are planning to adopt a kid in a year so check in after a year.

Been using my free time to cook, write, code and game.

[–] tomkatt@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yes. mid-40s, no kids, and I work from home.

Wife and I play RPGs on the weekends (currently enjoying Last Epoch and waiting for the next Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader DLC), and during the week I usually play single player games (right now in the middle of Lies of P and Fire Emblem: Awakening).

Depends what kind of adult. I'm in my 30s and I still game for hours on multiple days in the week. But I don't have a family with kids to maintain.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

Sure.

Energy to play? Well that's a tough one...

[–] JDPoZ@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)
  1. Cook at home and eat healthy
  2. Sleep enough hours every night
  3. Cultivate and maintain healthy non-familial relationships
  4. spend meaningful amounts of quality time with family
  5. Work at a full-time job 40+ hrs a week
  6. Play video games or engage in other hobbies

Choose 3

You cannot effectively do the rest.

I do 4, 5, & 6.

I slept 3 hours last night and have an embarrassing number of Uber Eats deliveries each month… but on the bright side I count the video game time sometimes as “cultivating healthy relationships” when I can get ahold of my fellow gaming dads who don’t go to bed until after 1am… 🫩🥱

Yeah and the only way I've been able to make it work is with the steam deck since it allows me to hang out in the TV room with everyone. Sequestering myself away in a dedicated room is over I'm afraid lol.

[–] Localhorst86@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

yes, i do. Almost daily.

Barely anymore.
When I have free time, I spend it on my hobby projects, or I'll watch YouTube because it's less commitment (i mostly play multiplayer games where I don't wanna quit on my teammates mid-match).

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I usually make time if there's a particular story driven game I want to play.

Otherwise I choose games that fit between everything else in life. Mostly play indie games these days.

[–] atlien51@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

I shall always make time <3
