That belief is still pervasive, at least to some extent, which is something that's always kinda bewildered me. Like, baby comes out and first thing we do is rub it with an abrasive towel, and slap its feet and ass to make it cry so it starts deep breathing, then literally turn around and cut the tip of its dick off without any anesthetic because it can't feel pain?! What the fuck made it cry when we slapped its ass if it can't feel pain?!

I wouldn’t change anything except the assumption in the overall medical field that infants can’t feel pain. I don’t know much more about this specific condition, but I have a different condition in which they assumed infants can’t feel pain, and they were wrong enough that I still have trauma from that.
Take any medical knowledge from 20+ years ago that sounds horribly painful with a grain of salt, because that was the assumption relatively recently. Some doctors who learnt medicine more than 20 years ago still think that.

Fun fact, traditionally speaking "Vanity" refers to the belief that God cares about the little things in your life, and that those prayers are worthy of his time. My stepping away from My religion occurred I think about 5 years ago. So my middle-ish thirties. Right about the time that they tried to make it illegal for women to be able to have access to medical services. And I argued that if the government has the ability to force a person to bring another person to term then the government has the level of authority it needs to take away your guns or do any other thing that would impose its rule over you via force. And when the church people who finally pulled the mask off and said yeah but at least this version of tyranny is okay according to the Bible was when I stepped away. Prior to that I had struggled with the concept of if there is a being that could have created all of existence, us as human beings would be like a flea trying to comprehend the lunar landing. And if a being of that caliber exist I cannot fathom that it would care whether or not you touched yourself at night. Or who you were in the bed with.

The more we learn about both the universe at large, and the history of our own species and planet, the more that seems true.
Human civilization as we conceive it (creating settlements and agriculture) has only existed for like 10k years.
