Hi guys, I am thinking of selling my old server which until now I have been using as a mini home lab. But now that I have a dedi on hetzner, I don't really see the point of keeping it around. What do you guys use your home lab for and why do you prefer it over cloud hosting?

I have decided that, simply put, I am very, very tired of my computer acting against me and gaining new problems every day as if they were achievements in a video game, so I’m going to take advantage of my Linux experience with the Steam Deck and Raspberry Pi OS to finally start moving away from Windows!

I'm using Interstellar with a PieFed account, and I've found communities quickly and easily (including many on this instance) as soon as I start typing partial words. But I just discovered that skateboarding@lemmy.world and rollerskating@lemmy.world aren't returned in searches unless I type out "!skateboarding@lemmy.world" in full. I only discovered these communities exist when I switched to Jerboa and my Lemmy account. Is this a quirk of federation, a mod setting, or something else?

I'm new to the Fediverse so please be gentle. 😂

During the first Trump administration there was often the feeling of being unable to escape the news. Every day, a new presidential proclamation via Twitter. Every day, a comment made in a press gaggle with potentially staggering implications. For many, the impact was immediate; but more often than not, the threat remained conceptual. This time around is different; things are actually getting materially worse each day, and the human brain is unequipped to notice, let alone process, all of it.

From the continued genocide in Gaza and the disappearing of immigrants off our streets by federal agents, to the dismantling of our health care infrastructure and the ever-growing scourge of gun violence, the pace of news is relentless. Even so, it’s crucial to take stock of events that each on their own would have once been considered a catastrophe, especially when much of major American media would give you the impression that the only thing that happened over the weekend was Charlie Kirk’s hagiographic memorial.

Let’s walk through a few important stories you may have missed—

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet on Saturday said Charlie Kirk's surgeon called it an "absolute miracle" that the bullet that killed him didn’t exit his body because dozens of people were standing behind him when he was shot.

"I want to address some of the discussion about the lack of an exit wound with Charlie. I’m usually not interested in delving into most of this kind of online chatter, and I apologize this is somewhat graphic, but in this case, the fact that there wasn’t an exit wound is probably another miracle, and I want people to know," Kolvet, the executive producer of "The Charlie Kirk Show," wrote in a lengthy post on X.

The title says it all, we can't stop the boycott yet.

Infact I honestly believe even if they relent we should continue the boycott until the Sinclair group offers an apology.

The Pentagon will drastically change its rules for journalists who cover the Department of Defense, two U.S. officials who are not authorized to speak publicly confirmed to NPR Friday. The move drew sharp criticism from news organizations, who said it violated the bedrock of a free press.

Going forward, journalists must sign a pledge not to gather any information, including unclassified reports, that hasn't been authorized for release.

"In total, law enforcement discovered 300 SIM servers – over 100,000 SIM cards – enabling encrypted, anonymous communication and capable of sending 30 million text messages per minute. Officials say the servers were so powerful they could have disabled cell phone towers and launched distributed denial of services attacks with the ability to block emergency communications like EMS and police dispatch."
