Maybe not the right place to ask this, but why are American conservatives called conservatives? Where I live, in one of the EU countries, they would be considered extremists and the Democrats would be considered right wing.

[–] k_rol@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The right and left are subjective terms. It really depends where you live and people will be more or less left/right.

As a Canadian I think the American conservatives are right religious nuts rather than just right extremist.

I think the American conservatives are right religious nuts rather than just right extremist.

Both are true.

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Well that's not how that works.

Right wing means you believe that some people are naturally better than others.

Right-wing politics is the range of political ideologies that view certain social orders and hierarchies as inevitable, natural, normal, or desirable,[1][2][3] typically supporting this position in favour of conservatismnatural laweconomicsauthoritypropertyreligion, or tradition.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] Hierarchy and inequality may be seen as natural results of traditional social differences[11][12] or competition in market economies.

At least in Canada, most people I know think Liberal = anything left, Conservative = anything right. Maybe Americans are the same.

[–] maniclucky@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Basically. Our Overton window is fucked thanks to the Nazis in power. Both current and historical.

In my country(that is in the EU), there are people that would call anyone that says anything remotely positive about gay people woke communists trying to bring Nicolae Ceaușescu back from the dead

It comes down to how American conservatives are extremely hostile to any kind of change whatsoever. In more extreme cases, like MAGA, QAnon, TeaParty, etc. that hostility towards change can lead to fear, which can lead to things like violence, terrorism, hate groups, etc. In short, they are called conservatives because they wish above all else to "conserve" the status quo (as they see it), that often being racism, sexism, slavery, xenophobia, hate groups, misogyny, white supremacy, Christian fascism, etc.

[–] Prove_your_argument@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

American "conservatives" are anything but conservative.

They're hyper liberal. They're ripping up precedent left and right to institute how the think things "should be" as if it's 250 years ago. The billionaires want slavery. They want to eradicate all minorities and anybody who isn't white. They don't have the support to do all of this all at once, so they're starting with the people who will never support them first. Take away the support of the opposition and more and more unpopular actions can be taken to push things towards an oligarch controlled white christian nationalist organization.

They're spending money like crazy but only in ways that support them politically. They're trying to drive out anything that is remotely left ideologically until the middle is the left, and then they're next.

[–] MTZ@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Oh yeah, I agree with you. They have driven the Overton window into another dimension.

And denying climate change as it would require their thinking and doing to change. They hate that the most.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

That is exactly American brainwashing. You are correct.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 5 points 16 hours ago

That is not a question and you know it isn't

You’re 100% right but we repealed the fairness doctrine in 1987, and ever since that, we’ve had politicized information cycles. Republicans in 1987 knew they’d have to lie to continue holding power; but they also have been enshitifying education too. In turn, a lot of people are just simply undereducated and comforted by their echo chambers. Have that happen for 40 years. Here we are.

Why would anybody use Threads? I made an account on there just to see what it's about and it was so shitty that I ended up deleting it a couple of hours later. Most of the content is just ragebait, political misinformation, and businesses/influencers trying to shill something. For every 10 posts you might get 1 or 2 that don't fall in these categories. It's just bad, and not in a good way.

[–] Donebrach@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So it’s like all of social media since forever? Shocking!

[–] Gorilladrums@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's bad even for social media standards.

[–] chrislowles@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

There was a handful of people I met there that I thought were cool that going back to Mastodon wanted to follow and honestly it's the only sane way to interact with that platform, it feels like TMZ made a Twitter clone.

Jesus was definitely a libertarian and definitely not a conservative. Oh, except for inside a temple on markets day.

[–] dawnslayer@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)
