Odd, this is exactly what criminals would do.

[–] barnaclebutt@lemmy.world 58 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

If someone shows up in an unmarked car with no badge and tries to abduct you, why can't you just shoot them?

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 43 points 19 hours ago (4 children)

You can! As much as you can shoot anyone. You're just likely to be severely outgunned and also you'll have to stand trial over it. No idea the odds of winning that case, but the govt largely isn't going after people with money to hire lawyers. Probably get a defense fund donated bigger than Mangione.

Wait, what am I thinking? They will just deport you rather than have a trial and risk a judge declaring their tactics illegal and granting a self-defense claim to resisters.

[–] capital_sniff@lemmy.world 26 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

We had a fellow who shot at the unmarked unidentified police roaming around Minneapolis during the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd. He was at a gas station if I remember and they beat the shit out of him. It took a while but he won the case and some money.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I think that guy actually shot back when they were driving around firing pepper balls at random people.

Isn't that "stand your ground"? Or does that only work on black or brown people?

[–] Linktank@lemmy.today 57 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Can't be held accountable if there's no accountability!

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Seriously, officers who aren't pulling them over and ticketing/arresting then should be fired or removed imm

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 19 points 1 day ago

they are most likely being told higher up in secret not to.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah this is no different then defunding covid studies / the cdc and claiming covid no longer exists

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Take a picture of the VIN! It’s on the windshield at the bottom. Sometimes other places too

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

What do we do with the VIN?

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

It’s tied to the title and if it’s a private vehicle will tell you who the owner is. Theoretically.

[–] Blumpkinhead@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Do average citizens have access to that information though? I would think it wouldn't show personal information.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Carfax lets you check some information with a VIN.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 23 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Man. Driving around without plates is always sure to raise an eyebrow in most people.

I'm starting to wonder if we need something to mark a part of the vehicle to alert people it is definitely ICE. Something like vital to the vehicle so they can't just remove it. Like a tire. Maybe something you could like quickly toss in front of and behind a tire. Something that will stick in it. Tires are pretty thick so maybe something slightly sharp, but strong. Maybe two pieces of purpose built steel wrapped around each other. Like that "jacks" game with the bouncy ball.

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 10 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Just paint. Any color. Nail polish works.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

That doesn't usually flatten a tire

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Ah, sorry. I was thinking of IDing purposes.

A wad of bubblegum with 2 or three nails pushed through it in opposing directions? Maybe a crumbled cardboard roll from a toilet paper instead of gum, not sure… something cheap and fast to produce is the answer, with multiple nails to make sure it sticks.

Only problem with nails is that they can simultaneously clog the hole they create, but it’s a start.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I think it depends on the kind of nail. Some nails have groove things that add a little bit of extra resistance to moving back out. Others do not. They also have to be sufficiently large. It's probably a good idea that they don't come out right away either. It'd be better for them to get a flat tire on a different street than the one you're on.

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

If we could get bulk tubular rivets, but sharp ones, I could see it working quite effectively in place of the nail. It punctures the wheel all the same, but with a hole straight through it for venting purposes. Tire would deflate as fast as the diameter of the hole allows air to escape.

You can probably buy tubular rivets and grind the end to a point. But a ready to go bulk source would be more ideal.

Edit: disclaimer: I am not advocating for any action with the information I share. This information is not advice. The information I provide is purely educational in every manner, shape, and form.

Edit: this would cause enough damage

Use like five or seven nails per ball. Use the putty to fuse the heads together. You can make somewhere between 10-20 units for under $20. That’ll disable a car by destroying its tire.

Edit: probably some good ways to spiderweb a windshield from a distance too. Slingshots can be effective.

Edit: You could also perhaps superglue a magnet to an AirTag and stick it to the vehicle. Cheap tracking of ICE location.

Edit: You know, having a strategy to ID the masked villains would be most effective. There’s a human effect where, if you have to put your identity next to your actions, you’re far less likely to act in evil ways. Just think about how shameless online trolls can be—ICE advantages from that mindset because of their masks.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

good idea. or maybe a paintball that doesnt wash off.

Like these, which are used for marking trees or livestock https://nelsonpaint.com/nelson-pellet-mark-oil-base-marking-pellets-120-ct-box/

Oh oh! I know! If they really want to look ghostly then they could wear white sheets over themselves while arresting people.

👻

[–] elvith@feddit.org 17 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

With some kind of pointy hood?

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

A grand ‘ol wizard’s hat perchance?

[–] chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Be more ghostlike, you say? I'm sure we can find some people that are willing to facilitate.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Apparently one of them was a good Nazi recently

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The link for "Customs and Border Patrol agent" goes to fucking careers dot CBP dot gov. Whatever news outlet that is is doing recruitment advertising in an article about a suicide.

"Hey, we're short staffed, you want a job? We'll give you a gun..."

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

"Only for threatening innocent people through, when you're all used to you'll have to find your own to finish the job."

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

It’s the New York Daily News. Specifically, Nicholas Williams and Rocco Parascandola.

It seems they may write for multiple entities so it’s entirely possible that this was an editor choice and not their own. I don’t know though.

[–] leadore@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

They probably use an AI to go through and add links to key phrases.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 19 points 14 hours ago

So if someone wants to commit crimes, they can get take the plates off an unassuming van and the cops wont touch them? Got it.

[–] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 14 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Get the VIN if you get close enough

[–] modus@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Ok but seriously, what are you going to do? Find out who owns it? Check the accident report? This whole "no plates" commotion is pointless. The police don't give a shit. We know that and so far it seems as if nothing will change that.

Noem says she is just doing it to protect the kids on Halloween and keep them safe. Well shouldn't we as good citizens help their kids and go and protect their neighborhoods while they are protecting ours... Seems only fair.

[–] theolodis@feddit.org 1 points 19 hours ago

Which neighborhood are we talking about? Republican cities? Republican rural areas? Washington D.C.?

[–] KingOfSleep@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Secret Police gonna secret.

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Plate less?? What the actual fuck

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

A fat ghost

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

Remind me of other times in history when a militarized government agency was allowed to operate in secret with total impunity and how that turned out.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Personal vehicles perhaps.
