The Department of Homeland Security has escalated its clash with so-called sanctuary states this week, warning California, New York, and Illinois in letters obtained by CBS News that refusal to honor immigration detainers could trigger federal legal action.

In letters dated Sept. 10, Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons ordered the attorneys general of the three states to declare within two days whether they would comply with "thousands of ICE detainers" lodged against individuals in state custody, according to DHS. Immigration detainers are formal requests by ICE asking local jails and prisons to notify the agency before releasing an individual, and to hold them briefly so federal agents can take undocumented migrants into federal custody.

Lol California would bankrupt the US if it stops payments.

[–] Xaphanos@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

Let's add NY and MA just to be sure.

I really wish we'd fucking do this one way or another. We're the fourth largest economy in the world, and we are staunchly against all of this shit Trump is doing.

Sounds like those states should figure out how to withhold funding to the federal government.

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think several states have been working on just that

[–] BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I haven't heard anything about this other than baseless rumors in comments. Do you have a source?

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 5 points 2 days ago

I'm no politician so I can't tell you how seriously it's being considered, but Democrats in multiple states have drafted bills to block federal taxes if they feel the federal government is delinquent in owed federal funding.

Do it. Then blue states can stop paying federal taxes.

Why believe the federal government on their threats?

You're damned if you do ... and damned if you don't

It's the same thing that happens when the mafia start threatening everyone with breaking knees if you don't just give up all your money all the time ... eventually people figure out that it's better to fight back because your going to lose your knees anyway.

There's a reason why the mafia balance their threats ... they want to keep people afraid enough to give up some of their money all the time ... rather than be constantly and perpetually afraid to the point where people will just get suicidal and make you no money at all.

Well if alligator Auschwitz can just lose track of hundreds of prisoners I don't know why these states couldn't accidentally lose track of detainees as well

If only we could have a real life Vir Cotto, smuggling people away from the fascist scum.

[–] 5too@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The only problem I see is, smuggle them to where? For the immigrants, this was supposed to be their sanctuary; for the others, the US isn't (yet) classified as a country you can seek asylum from.

Individuals might have someplace safe outside the country they could flee to, but I don't see anyplace that could handle them en masse yet

[–] Beebabe@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

We fund them. And I wish we would stop.

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Immigration ain't their fucking job. It's yours. Deal with it.

[–] pahlimur@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

It's not legal in Oregon to do this, the state isn't allowed to use resources to help with immigration enforcement. Also why Oregon is considered a sanctuary state.

[–] fluxion@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

They are going to do it anyway so tell them to suck a bag of dicks

While hating ICE as much as the next commenter... What if we did?

Seriously, bringing the state into the mix could establish proper paper trails, log activity, ensure access to legal representation, verify warrants, and uphold laws so frequently violated by Trump's Gestapo.

Sort of a malicious compliance thing if the Fed is twisting your arm.

The second they're in custody of ICE they virtually disappear. At best it reinforces the narrative that these aren't hardened criminals being picked up, but anyone with half a brain already knew that.

I think there's a movie about that. Schindler's List I think.

I haven't actually watched it though so I'm not sure.

[–] Xaphanos@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I like this. Agent names, chain of custody, evidence locker, mandatory body cams, the works.

The problem is many local budgets are strapped for cash, they'd have to ignore services they actually need to do in order to implement something like this.

Ok good luck

If the federal government withholds tax dollars, remember those are your tax dollars, so pay them to your state instead. You don't need the federal government especially if they are going to steal.

Yeah, maybe we can consider that when you do something about Tom Homan and that sack of money he took as a bribe.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago

The biggest charge will be embezzlement. Right in plan sight. Crypto, government contracts, and errors will be it. Can't wait for the pitch forks and torches.
