I always assumed America would swiftly deal with a racist fascist criminal megalomaniac.

Boy was I wrong.

This nation is WEAK.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 50 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (4 children)

Well instead of dealing with their fascist problem after WWII, they decided to repress (and sometimes kill) the most reliable antifascists - the leftists.

That said some countries that objectively did purge their fasists seem to still have that problem today. Perhaps the theory that capitalism creates fascism as it declines predicts this.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 29 points 6 days ago (5 children)

Capitalism creates an environment of fear and danger and promotes of level of individual responsibility that alienates people from everyone else. Even people who are well off today are afraid of losing advantages and being hung out to dry by the very same uncaring system they keep supporting.

We also literally imported their scientists

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

After directly inspiring their eugenics efforts.

[–] Awkwardparticle@programming.dev 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Are you referring to purging facists after Nazi Germany fell?

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Well, I guess the Soviet Union didn't really help there.

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 26 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Why would they deal with racists? USA as a whole never stopped being racist.

Turns out conservatives were just waiting for one evil and horrible enough all along.

And the Democrats... Jesus Christ are they useless. They roll over at the very sound of a stiff breeze.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

I'd call America a nation of bitches, but bitches have a backbone.

[–] Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The USA is distracted with treats. It's economy is the imperial core of the planet. That fact affords Trump some time before the masses realize what's going on.

Remember that the Nazis made the economy temporarily better for the in-group. They actually allowed socialist benefits for the German workforce before clamping down on that during WWII.

Trump isn't making the economy better for anyone though. He's screwing everyone over, and channeling that hate towards anything else but him and his base.

Just as we've seen with Charlie Kirk's murder and Candace Owen's conspiracy theory to blame it all on Israel, the Right can fracture very easily. I don't think this Admin will make it to the height of the Nazis. Their own incompetence and marriage to the rich will sew the seeds of their demise. Of course, anti-fascists throwing wrenches in things doesn't hurt either.

[–] jacksilver@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is what I keep expecting, but there has been minimal pushback on all the horrible economic policies and somehow the economy is mostly shrugging it off.

There was period of time during Trump's last administration where the world just got so crazy I had a collection of screenshots of "not the onion" headlines that just seemed too insane to be real.

I remember one was like "Judge determines woman can't prove she didn't want to be set on fire."

This would fit in nicely.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Huh.......I'm trying to think of what legal defense you could give to PROVE you didn't want to be set on fire.

I can't think of one. What do you say that proves it? Which means I get how that headline happened, but also.....how did THAT headline happen???

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The only thing I can think of is that there was some sort of event where other people were being willingly set on fire. Like if were some sort of performance that went wrong, I could see there being a reasonable defense that the performer didn't know she didn't want to participate.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 days ago

It could also be a kink thing.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 4 points 6 days ago

Most of the time when weird questions like that involving consent come up, I assume it probably involved some kind of sex thing.

[–] kionay@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

my lay person understanding of the law is that in situations like these you don't need to prove what should be so overwhelmingly self-evident

there's probably some Latin phrase for it a lawyer would just know but when a thing is so far away from a gray area of reasonableness you're fine

you shouldn't need hard evidence, people as a rule don't like to set themselves on fire

ABC just caved and fired kimmel, the fascists are winning

[–] Tja@programming.dev 36 points 5 days ago

Of course they are winning, the American electorate made sure of that. Presidency, both chambers, Supreme Court, popular vote, etc.

Project 2025 was known worldwide, now they are just implementing it.

And the public seem to be fine with it, trump has one of the highest approval ratings in the world (despite being negative).

Obamacare will be next, then Medicare, then contraceptives, then gay marriage...

[–] BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world 22 points 5 days ago (4 children)

The thing is you're confused here, but it's fine because he's confused. It's the wrong ABC. He thinks it's the American broadcasting corporation. And you could be forgiven for thinking that because that's all the identification we get here. This is actually the "Australian" broadcasting corporation. I'm not as familiar, but it looks like their PBS.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 12 points 5 days ago

There were recent interactions with both nations' ABCs. The OP article where he says "maybe we should go after you" is about US ABC, after a reporter asked about going after hate speech.

In the one about Aus ABC the reporter asked about shady business deals, and the response was "You're hurting Australia" and threatened to tell the Austalian "leader" that the reporter was setting a "bad tone".

US: https://youtu.be/Zxa8diaYNmQ

Aus: https://youtu.be/TzO5nz7hJmo

[–] wjrii@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Somebvody posted a link from Australian ABC about this story, but it was American ABC.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Being an Aussie doesn't mean they won't try and go after him.

Disgusting that happened, it's not pro free speech, Charlie's death should of reminded us more then ever the value of free speech

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 74 points 6 days ago

If you don't want to be called a Nazi, stop doing Nazi shit you sack of human shit.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 64 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (4 children)

Trump always had this knack of revealing his intentions when he thought he could just hit back at people.

That's nothing new.

But what he reveals is indeed getting worse every day, or at least: every day of 2025 it is much worse than before that.

This, ladies and germs, is narcissistic dictatorial megalomania. Let's hope ~~it~~ he won't last long.

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 29 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I hoped it wouldn't last long back in January.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 31 points 6 days ago

And that was like 10-15 years ago

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 11 points 6 days ago

Let's hope it won't last long.

Just hoping he goes away doesn't strike me as a good strategy. So probably that's what the Democrats will go with.

Also, dementia

[–] 5in1k@lemmy.zip 21 points 6 days ago (2 children)

It's an old phrase coined by Milton Berl. A subversion of Ladies and Gents.

[–] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] 5in1k@lemmy.zip 5 points 6 days ago

It happens. You’re still breathing. That’s what counts.

[–] voodooattack@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

Ooh. I’ve never seen this before. Thanks for the clarification!

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 26 points 6 days ago

Trump is using the "bully pulpit" to bully people out of their constitutional rights.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago

Ah yes, open threats leveraging intentional division, like a true leader

[–] grranibal@lemmy.zip 15 points 6 days ago

[insert “where are the epstein files” gif]

[–] Sam_Bass@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

O he will eventually, make mistake. Longer he is allowed to be the tyrant he wants to be, all of his 'threats' are very real

[–] lmdnw@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The second is there to defend the first.

[–] onslaught545@lemmy.zip 3 points 6 days ago

Don't worry, he'll go after the second any day now.

[–] RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Anytime you win, you know it when he starts talking about how hot the country is

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Any asshole posting about a "general strike" with no support fund and no organization of their strikers is a fed.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Well lol im just in an industry with no unions so thought it was good to post but apparently its some op now so i wont spread the link. But we definitely need to shut down this fascist takeover

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 2 points 6 hours ago

Sorry, nothing personal. I've seen images posted a lot. This is the first time I saw a website, but that's even worse.

Strikes take a lot of planning and coordination. You need to be able to support your strikers so that they'll be able to outlast Capital until your demands are met. One of the main purposes of unions is to save a "war chest" to do this.

If I and a bunch of my Internet buddies tried to strike, the first problem is that we'd each be the only striker at our workplaces...our bosses would just fire us and go on with their day.
