Summary

Trump’s trade wars and tariffs are hitting his own voters the hardest, with retaliatory levies from China, Canada, and Europe targeting industries in Trump-supporting states.

A New York Times analysis found that nearly 8 million Americans, mostly Trump voters, work in affected sectors like farming, steel, and manufacturing.

While some remain loyal, others are voicing frustration over job losses and economic strain. States like Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Indiana are particularly vulnerable.

Cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security could further impact Trump’s base.

If I were American I would worry more about the US turning into a fashist autocracy. Everyone can handle 4 years of economic hardship, but once you have the autocrats in power you can't get out of that shithole for generations. Just asked the North Koreans, Chinese or Russians.

We lost that battle when we let corporations become people. Since then corporations are the only people that matter. The rest of us are only consumers. This is capitalism cannibalizing itself.

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

If corporations can't survive a period of incarceration, like zero operations or sales, they are not people. Stupid that Citizens United was passed.

Everyone can handle 4 years of economic hardship

I believe that’s what most Trump voters are thinking about. They’re willing to make some economic sacrifices to get the country to change in a way they agree with. And the fact that their liberal neighbors will also suffer economically, and more than them psychologically makes this sacrifice more palatable.

I think there are many people who can't handle 4 years of economic hardship. A lot of folks are barely making ends meet as-is.

Even so, endless fascism is still even worse. They won't go willingly, and they won't respect election results. Leave it too long and it will be as difficult as overthrowing Hitler or the USSR. Actually more difficult, because those regimes faced actual opposition from abroad, whereas now it feels like the whole world is going fascist.

Or Palestinians

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Many people cannot handle 6 months of economic hardship. Did you even think before writing that?

[–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 1 points 4 hours ago

Did you even read my comment to the end before writing that?

Actions should have consequences

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 10 points 6 hours ago

They've gotten away for a very long time with not having any direct consequences. Oh no that was the previous guy, oh no that was COVID, oh no no one could do any better.

It's pretty damn clear at this point which stage of the FAFO everyone is in

[–] LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I have a really hard time feeling sympathy for them. Like lots of people who didn’t want this are getting hurt a lot more now, so anything that comes to them is well deserved

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 8 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Most of us aren't hurt yet, but we will be.

[–] sunbrrnslapper@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

We are planning for a huge downturn in July at work. I expect something between a recession and a complete shit show. Hoping for the former.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 9 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I'm so worried about the fascism that I can hardly bother to worry about the economic consequences.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 hours ago

Honestly I'm hoping the economic consequences are so severe that it cripples fascism. Basically if everyone's unemployed and angry the ability to control folks becomes questionable at best.

Don't buy stuff made from those states whenever possible.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 4 points 7 hours ago

Food is the one the one thing I buy regularly, that I directly purchase and can know the source on. So I'm sitting here with my little local CSA farm-share all lined up, and a tiny garden set up out back. There'll be things I'll have to buy, but I'll either get them at the farmer's market, or I'll make sure to purchase imports. I'm absolutely determined to avoid red-state produce.

The leopards are eating good tonight.

[–] IHeartBadCode@fedia.io 8 points 7 hours ago

At this rate the leopards are going to need to speak with a nutritionist about how to better balance their diet and daily exercise.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 3 hours ago

Good. Trump voters don't deserve happiness.

[–] Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

You mean that retaliation is the same as last time yet they didn't learn their lesson last time?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Actually, at least China and the EU is better prepaired, and the replies came faster and in a more precisely tailored fashion. So this is not a slap on the butt pain, this is intended as a kick in the balls pain. Which even hardcore Trumpists might notice.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

As long as the nation becomes racist and homo/trans phobic they won't care.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

I hope so. If you voted for Dorito Mussolini you deserve everything that's coming to you.

[–] Scolding7300@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Musk literally said that Americans will suffer but that has to happen to "pull through this"
