I'm glad it's not just me.

Me: "Did the memes just turn German, or am I really tired?"

Lemmy: "当你太美国化而无法识别中文时的感觉"

Me: "Okay, yep, it's bedtime."

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 66 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I myself am german. I'm referring to this meme from two days ago and thought it would be funny to remind americans to go to bed when I wake up for a few days.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

That makes sense. Thanks for linking the reference. It is very funny.

The feeling when you're too American to recognize Chinese

Oh my god this is brilliant. When I got to that line, my first thought was "Which language is that?" And then I read the very next line.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun with that one.

Yeah there's a large part of social media now where I no longer have any fucking idea what's going on. This is that part.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

I'm kind of enjoying it. I translate things sometimes. Most of the time, I don't. I'm just really happy to have social media that isn't an authoritarian, walled garden, filtered for engagement, and segregated by culture. Lemmy may be small, but it's diversity is really strong. It does create situations in which I can't appreciate the content sometimes, but I'm happy that it's there for its intended audience in a way that I can see. It's nice to feel included in things that aren't specifically for me.

It'd be nice to have a translation plugin in my lemmy app

Ich bin Kanadierin und du bist nicht meine Mama!

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But Canada is a country on the (north) american continent, isn't it?

[–] not3ottersinacoat@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Local naming conventions preclude the use of "American" to mean Canadian. "North American" would be acceptable.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But what if I want to refer to someone from anywhere.on the americas, north, middle or south?

[–] not3ottersinacoat@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At least here, it would be conventional to say North American, South American, or Central American.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And what about the entirety of people on the american continents?

[–] not3ottersinacoat@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You just said it. I'm merely desribing local naming conventions. call any Canadian "American" (in English) and you will get a puzzled reaction at best :)

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You just said it.

What exactly? I'm looking for an equivalent to europeans, africans, asians, europeans. Americans don't get the special treatment of not being referred to in their entirety.

[–] not3ottersinacoat@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't know what to tell you and I don't know why you're getting angry at me - I'm not prescribing language, I'm describing it and yes, I'm aware this differs in other languages and other parts of the world. The continental model we use has North and South America as separate continents, therefore you might as well ask me what to call Africans and Europeans together.

Anyhow, I'm not going to reply anymore since you're being kinda annoying, sorry.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

I'm not getting angry, it's a mixture of being confused and poking fun at confusing language stuff.

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I'm looking for an equivalent to europeans, africans, asians, europeans

The equivalent would be North Americans or South Americans, as they are two seperate continents

Ich nicht spreche deutsch :( aber ich lerne deutsch

[–] yum@lemmy.eco.br 1 points 2 days ago

According to Duolingo it goes as "Ich spreche kein Deutsch"

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 1 points 2 days ago

I think the nicht goes after the verb in German. Technically does in English as well as you say "I don't speak German" where "do" is the verb being negated
