The fight over California’s new congressional map designed to help Democrats flip congressional House seats will go to court Monday as a panel of federal judges considers whether the district boundaries approved by voters last month can be used in elections.

The hearing in Los Angeles sets the stage for a high-stakes legal and political fight between the Trump administration and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who’s been eyeing a 2028 presidential run. The lawsuit asks a three-judge panel to grant a temporary restraining order by Dec. 19 — the date candidates can take the first official steps to run in the 2026 election.

Voters approved California’s new U.S. House map in November through Proposition 50. It’s designed to help Democrats flip as many as five congressional House seats in the midterm elections next year. It was Newsom’s response to a Republican-led effort in Texas backed by President Donald Trump.

The Moscow City Court has upheld the sentence against Grigory Melkonyants, co-chair of the election rights advocacy movement Golos (“Vote”). Melkonyants was convicted of participating in the activities of an “undesirable” organization — namely, the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO) ... In May 2025, the Basmanny District Court sentenced Melkonyants to five years in a general-security penal colony; his defense appealed the ruling.

At the appellate court hearing, Melkonyants delivered a final statement in which he criticized the work of the prosecutor’s office and the court, calling their approach to sentencing “careless.” [The statement can be read in the linked article.]

...

Diplomatic staff from the embassies of the U.S., France, the Czech Republic, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, and New Zealand, as well as a representative of the European Union, attended the announcement of Melkonyants’s sentence in May.

On Sunday, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani invited members of the public to meet with him, one on one, for three minutes at a time, in a sparely appointed room at the Museum of the Moving Image, in Astoria.

The energy in the room was part D.M.V., part papal antechamber. (The sweet Adeni chai on offer as a refreshment surely didn’t help all the nervous fidgeting.) A few participants were museum staffers and venders who had been invited to join in, but most had heard about the event on Instagram the day before, when Mamdani’s team had posted a call for people to apply to attend. In an attempt to attract people beyond the superfans, they had asked some large local unions and community groups to spread the word.

Visitor No. 1 was Vinny Corletta, a former teacher of English and language arts, also from Astoria, who had lined up in the snow before the museum opened. Mamdani’s rent-stabilized one-bedroom apartment is just a few blocks away, and Corletta wanted to talk to him, before he moves into Gracie Mansion, about building more family housing. “I want to know that these two-bedroom, three-bedroom apartments or condos are being built,” he said, as opposed to big buildings crammed with studios and one-bedrooms, like the one Mamdani lives in. “I want to see, like, where it’s earmarked and located, that schools are going to be in those places, how many seats they’re expecting.” He added, “Something that’s real, that I can follow up on and track and trace.” When Corletta emerged from his three-minute meeting, he pronounced himself satisfied. “It was amazing,” he said. “He was really taking notes.”

Ulefone has already made a name for itself in the rugged smartphone business. Now, it's got a sub-brand that's focused on more niche innovations for people who want more differentiated devices – and its first flagship product is quite something.

Hey guys,

I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed reviews lately all over the web, I arrived recently in Canada so I’m curious. where do you guys actually play?

As for me, for now, these are the ones I play:

Wildz is my favourite. I've the rewards are actually decent (the Spinback feature saved me a few times lol). Never had an issue getting paid out, which is the main thing I care about.

Flamez This is a newer one, only started playing this year. I gotta say, I've weirdly been very lucky on Flamez. Not sure if it's just beginner's luck or the RTP is just better, but I've hit some nice wins. Def worth a look if you want something new.

7Bit I keep this one in the rotation specifically for crypto. If you hold BTC or whatever, it’s super easy to deposit and the withdrawals are basically instant.

Anyway that’s just my personal experience. Let me know if you guys are playing anywhere else decent in Canada rn.

The Trump administration said Monday in a court filing that the president’s White House ballroom construction project must continue for reasons of national security.

The filing came in response to a lawsuit filed last Friday by the National Trust for Historic Preservation asking a federal judge to halt the project until it goes through multiple independent reviews and wins approval from Congress.

In its filing, the administration included a declaration from the deputy director of the U.S. Secret Service saying more work on the site of the former White House East Wing is still needed to meet the agency’s “safety and security requirements.” The administration has offered to share classified details with the judge in an in-person setting without the plaintiffs present.
