Localsend is fantastic.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 5 points 16 hours ago

Cool! Thanks for sharing!

Seems to work much better on Linux than it does on Windows, in my experience.

[–] ThisIsAManWhoKnowsHowToGling@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I already installed it, you don't need to sell it to me so hard!

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

I wasn't selling KDE Connect to you, I was selling Linux to the other people that might overhear, lol.

[–] TheRedSpade@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

My phone and computer can occasionally see each other through KDE Connect. Never when I actually have a use for it though.

[–] mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz 3 points 8 hours ago

i have this issue between my media pc (mint) and my phone (GOS), but my phone and desktop (ultramarine kde) can see each other and desktop and media pc can see each other.....

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

You might have some background power saving mode enabled for the KDE app on your phone.

[–] a_person@piefed.social 6 points 17 hours ago

Best one, a bit finicky at times but amazing.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 27 points 13 hours ago

Localsend!!

[–] phanto@lemmy.ca 27 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

First, buy a domain. Then, set up a server, then a hypervisor on the server, then set up a reverse proxy, punch a hole in your firewall, set up MFA, set up a container, install docker, set up NextCloud using a docker-compose, set up accounts and a client on the devices... Simple!

[–] slate@sh.itjust.works 12 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Don't forget setting up a second instance, UPS, and health checks with automatic failover and load balancing.

[–] phanto@lemmy.ca 7 points 16 hours ago

And off-site! Don't forget that!

[–] LuxSpark@lemmy.cafe 3 points 15 hours ago

Damn, why didn't I think of that?I was thinking maybe email the file to myself, but your idea is so much sexier!

[–] rem26_art@fedia.io 2 points 15 hours ago

thats some of the finest Google cosplay

Also KDE connect but I just learned you can send more than one file at a time through it.

  • From Android to Linux Desktop: select files then the share button then send to [Your PC Name here] via KDE connect
  • Both ways: select Remote Filesystem and just move or copy files around in the file browser.
[–] nieminen@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago

Kde connect is also available in windows

[–] iturnedintoanewt@lemmy.world 15 points 17 hours ago

KDE Connect. You need to be in the same network. But it's clearly the easiest and most useful.

I second KDE Connect, it makes life a lot easier

[–] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

I use Pairdrop also.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 10 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

There are already mentions of LocalSend (i use it for smaller stuff), Syncthing (for keeping folders synchronized, i use it to keep Wine prefixes between my Pc and my Steam Deck up to date) and KdeConnect (I use it for Clipboard sharing); I also use Copyparty, which runs on everything that allows python to run (so pretty much everything) and handles everything from single files to folders, up- and download, drag&drop support, serving mediafiles and so on, with lots and lots of features. give it a try!

[–] Canigou@jlai.lu 8 points 9 hours ago

I use Signal's "note to self" conversation. Since you can install the desktop version of Signal on basically any OS, it is almost perfectly cross-platform.

I use Syncthing for this; it syncs directories on my phone and computer, so to put something on my computer from my phone I just put it in that directory. I share my camera roll so my pictures are synced with my computer.

If you just want a "send this file" application, warpinator might do that.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 5 points 18 hours ago

I sometimes use element or signal to do that for small files, like pdfs and whatnot. I upload the file to my private chatroom and download from whatever device I need it on.

[–] DeuxChevaux@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe a little off the beaten track. I use samba shares on a server, and "Total Commander" on my phone / tablet with the smb extension, so I can easily copy stuff back and forth.

SMB share on your router, attached to an M.2 SSD in a USB enclosure.

Or Localsend app/program, shares well over the same WiFi.

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Microsoft has Phone Link for both iOS and Android

Google has Quick Share for Android.

[–] YoSoySnekBoi@kbin.earth 3 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Windows/Linux/Android devices can also send/receive files over bluetooth with any device that isn't running iOS (because Apple explicitly disables that part of the bluetooth spec on their devices)

On Windows, it's under bluetooth and device settings and on Android you can select share > bluetooth. Where it is on Linux varies

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

I've always had mixed luck with Bluetooth file sharing on Windows. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times it just doesn't seem to work at all. Even with the same exact devices.

[–] owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca 3 points 14 hours ago

I use Warpinator. Comes standard on Linux Mint and is available for Android and most other OSes, I think.

[–] Toes@ani.social 3 points 12 hours ago

I use total commander (for Android) it has various features to send files between devices. Works really well if you have SFTP set up on your computer, but it has other options.

It's also possible to connect phones together with a USBC cable and do it that way too.

[–] mybuttnolie@sopuli.xyz 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

i usually get some hate for this, but i have a samba share on my desktop, which i can access from home network. i use a wake on lan app to wake up the desktop when i need to access the share

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

I usually just use email.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 12 hours ago
[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

I used androidftp.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 2 points 12 hours ago

X-plore file manager.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 2 points 16 hours ago

I'm also going to recommend Unified Remote Full, which lets you control your computer from your phone. Like if you're downstairs and want to quick-check something on your PC upstairs, you can just open it up and poke around for what you need.

My only complaints are that it doesn't handle pop-up windows well, and sometimes when I use it in conjunction with Local Send, I can't complete the transfer. Edit - oh, and switching between left and right mouse buttons is a pain.

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 7 hours ago

SMB storage mounted by file manager

[–] early_riser@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

File share on a NAS and “save to files” under the share menu on iOS. Also the venerable “send yourself an email” if the file is small enough

[–] Raptor_007@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Snapdrop I’ve been using snapdrop for a long time, and now just run it locally in Docker. I use it at least monthly and it’s never failed me.

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I use sftp with either termux on android or ish on ios, alternatively telegram or email.

Edit: I don't use it, but if I'm not mistaken, nobody mentioned any cloud service.

And before I discovered ish, I used the python html module to start an html server and connected with safary. You shouldn't do this when your connected to the wild, open internet - it opens up the device on which your server runs for everybody unless you invest the work to secure the html server, taking a 1min research 1 line task into real work.
