Isn't this meme the wrong way round?

Joseph Gordon Levitt's character is the charlatan in the film

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 43 points 1 day ago

Can't be. Man good, woman bad.

[–] blinfabian@feddit.nl 21 points 1 day ago

idk the characters nor the movie. i just used a common template :3

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 38 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I'm probably just not cultivated enough in the refined world of internet memes, but this comes across as "girls are noobs hurr durr"

[–] blinfabian@feddit.nl 39 points 1 day ago (2 children)

idk, its just a meme template to me...

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

You did nothing wrong, people are just trying hard to find sexism where there is none. That template has always been 2 people thinking they have the same opinion but actually being very different. Could reverse those two and suddenly there would be no issues for them

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

seems to support their criticism

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 24 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

It's just a meme template, nothing deep. It's a template used to say "we are similiar yet not the same" or "we look the same but we are the opposite" or things like that

collapsed inline media

I'd argue that if your first thought was that, after looking at the template then...yeah something is clearly wrong with you

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Except society often already relegates the opinion of women as wrong by default. The template leans into that. I'd argue that them questioning the meme template is a good thing because they're aware of biases pushed by society.

Just because it's a meme template doesn't mean it's not deep

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

I do not know where you live but i love in a country that is mostly conservative, if we don't count countries as iran and such (were the problem is indeed present) it's not a problem, i never heard many people assuming that women are wrong because of their sex or gender. Maybe yeah, i heard some old grumpy grandpa but they will die soon anyway.

The meme template is not that deep, only choosen because it was the perfect scene for a meme, the fact that there is a man and a women is because most people are hetero, since memes are more a thing about many people it's just normal that it happens

Edit: grammar

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I live in the US with many good friends in UK and a few in South America who I discuss gender and unconscious bias with. Countless studies disagree with you including a broad UN study conducted in 2023. Women are still consistently discriminated against and the default unconscious bias is that women are inferior. Yes it's better (in some countries ignoring Iran and such) but it's still a significant problem. Your opinion here tells me you don't here about notice it because you choose not to. Go read the data.

The fact this meme spread without any consideration for the unconscious bias it plays into is exactly the point.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Then send me the study, thank you

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Fuck off. You couldn't literally spend ten seconds searching?

They even give a nice little graphic summary at the bottom. 90% of people still hold some form of bias against women. https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/06/1137532

And this is a single study. Just one.

Spend ten seconds more and you'll find studies on the bias entrenched in everything. Medicine, politics, social norms, etc. Many places didn't include women in medical studies until 1993. We have doctors today all over the place who went through med school reading data and studies that didn't include women.

Fuck even the temperature we set thermostats in offices is biased against women as it's based off old studies done on the average American male wearing a suit (ASHRAE 55 was the formula used if you want to look into it, though for this one many bodies such as OSHA and CCOH [Canadian OSHA basically] now recommend better temperatures, offices have lagged adjusting to them). All my female co-workers have brought thermo bottles for years to warm themselves up.

why not swap who is 'wrong' in this meme?

why use the woman every time?

that's the thing with art. it leeks your self onto it. memes included..

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I would've done it based on the direction or based on who i am honestly.

Probably a man choose the man as the one that uses librewolf instead of the woman Identification based on the identification they feel in the meme.

IN MY case i would've choosen always the left person to be in the right, whatever it was man or women cuz of the irony of the right being in the left and the fact i read from right to left in any language i know

[–] wholookshere@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

but that's the point isn't it?

even a meme is deeper than it looks of you did it based on who you are.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 2 points 1 day ago (9 children)

Yeah it is, but you all make it extreme and make it look like that if you decide to use the man for the right thing then you are bad

I like this version more that the privacy one. I vote we restart the thread with it.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 11 points 1 day ago

That's because it does. The template pretty much always pushes the man is right the woman is wrong which plays into several biases pushes by society.

[–] Redacted@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Comes across as the girl enjoys porn to me.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 3 points 1 day ago

It would work just as well if the icons were flipped. Would that come across better?

I can see the implicit sexism of implying the girl is the less informed. But I've also got a problem with gate keeping in the community. Someone might say they are focusing on privacy and use incognito chrome, but they're ideologically still on your "team"....they're just a bit behind in their journey and need to find out more about working their way up to making the real meaningful changes. Help em out.

[–] blinfabian@feddit.nl 6 points 1 day ago

thanks clippy :3

[–] Vespair@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So wait, not only did you add your additional privacy picks, you also added non-sequiturs for the topic like ChatGPT to the female character to make her appear not just under-informed but outright ignorant? Okay I guess

Lock yourself in a cave with no access to the internet for the ultimate privacy.

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

What's wrong with nord? Is it specifically bad or just not as good as other options?

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Even privacy advocates tend to rate Nord relatively highly. Maybe it’s just, like, the Yankees of VPN services and they advertise hard, so people knee-jerk hate them? (But I don’t know, someone can correct me if I’m wrong.)

I’m disappointed in them dropping Meshnet, that was an awesome free perk.

[–] hellfire103@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

It's proprietary, and therefore most of us don't trust it.

[–] blinfabian@feddit.nl 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

its just mainstream. thats why its in the meme. idk if its actually bad tho

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago

Makes sense, I was just curious as I don't know a whole lot about them.

[–] MotoAsh@piefed.social 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

It's bad because it's bloated trash whos main purpose is to upsell their other services.

It doesn't even work right after you hop a few servers.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

On the right side you forgot the apple.

[–] nagaram@startrek.website 3 points 5 hours ago

"I'm very privacy focused which is why I use Apple products"

Is such an annoying and real thing

[–] blinfabian@feddit.nl 6 points 1 day ago

thanks for the 1st comment on here thats not just complaining about the meme template :D

[–] yardratianSoma@lemmy.ca 3 points 21 hours ago

would have been better to use the breaking bad "Jesse Pinkman and Jane" template, no?

[–] TheJnx@piefed.social 3 points 14 hours ago
[–] ReginaPhalange@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What's the light switch thing above Proton Mail?
