It's been a long time since I sailed the seas. I don't even know how the kids do it anymore.

Forward the ports, baton down the router, there's a content storm coming ye salty bilge rat

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

The sea’s, she calls my name again! 🏴‍☠️

[–] fleem@piefed.zeromedia.vip 10 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

it certainly has evolved,

i used to think i enjoyed surfing sites for the best files but it really is nicer letting the Arrs do it for you

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 3 points 6 hours ago

Browse to discover, arr's for the actual lift.

[–] danafest@infosec.pub 1 points 19 minutes ago

Pretty easy to setup quality filters as long as the sites you're downloading from have releases with proper filenames to identify exactly what codec/audio/etc the release is.

Stremio with torrentio and realdebrid and you get 4k streaming from all torrent sites regardless of seeders

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

What if I want to watch live sports

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 7 points 4 hours ago

Problems I will never have.

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 4 points 4 hours ago

There is lots of free and paid IPTV providers

[–] lietuva@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 29 minutes ago)

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 3 hours ago

Jellyfin. Radarr. Sonarr. Big HDD.

It's like Kaleidescape but for poor people.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

I’m still using:
A btguard VPN.
Transmission for the torrent client.
1337x.to to search.

I’m sure that’s not the latest, hippest setup, but it works for me.

Is that still an ok flow? Should I change anything? I’m old and set in my ways.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 1 points 5 hours ago

Honestly still fine. There's some niche things you won't find on 1337x but it's rare.

[–] de_lancre@lemmy.world 1 points 59 minutes ago

Transmission kinda meh, in my testing. I would suggest using qbittorent, unless you hate Qt.

[–] plateee@piefed.social 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I started with things like Audiogalaxy, then moved on to kazaa. Oh man, then DC++ in college. Those were the days.

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 3 points 5 hours ago

If you miss DC++, nicotine (part of Soulseek network) is still great, it's got some quirky and weird users you can avoid pretty easily but the files are good

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Torrents still work, though I definitely need to update my tracker list.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 22 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Every movie, TV programme or anything else that I watch is from file sharing. Because if I buy media I expect media and not bundled viruses, digital restrictions management or corporate surveillance.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

This right here is the reason why piracy is as big and healthy as ever.

It's not about the money. Hell, we're spending thousands now whereas before it was at most a few hundreds per year. But now we can watch whatever we want without bullshit, without advertising

It's not about the ease of use. We now spent countless hours on building a libraries with everything we'd like to watch which I know will always be there

It's not about wanting to be "a criminal" or not caring about artists. Most artists get shit from Spotify, for example. We'd rather pay a few hundred per year to some foundation that will pay artists a fair share

It's about not wanting to deal with these huge anti social power monger companies and their shitty policies anymore.

You can't watch this, we won't allow it.

You can't watch that, you live in a country where it's bad for our profits if we allow you to watch that.

You can't watch this one because it's better for our profits that we dropped this so you now need to pay double for some other provider because we decided so.

We need to monitor your every move and excuuuusee me siiiirrr, i need to inspect ya aaasshole now... Please also give me all your personal information, minus the "please" because we'll just take it

You know, we're so big now, and you have so little options, we'll make you eat h add anyway even though you pay us

Fuuuuuuckkkk all of that.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 1 points 1 minute ago

Add on all the bullshit they hide in their contracts to cover liability. Fuck Disney saying that their customers can't sue them because they paid for a Disney Plus account. Should be legal but apparently it is.

[–] alias_qr_rainmaker@lemmy.world -2 points 4 hours ago (4 children)

that's why i have youtube premium. there are no ads so corporate bastards can't sway me with their propaganda

[–] weirdbeardgame@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago

Or just ... use uBlockOrigin

Sounds like you've already been swayed if you're just handing Google money

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Eh, we still get the sponsor ads in the videos. They're skippable but still tick me off for something I pay for to still hit me up every video.

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Unpopular but still: I use Grayjay. I think it's good software, even though it comes from bad people.

[–] Foni@piefed.zip 11 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Fewer or lower quality productions also affect those of us who download the content.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 12 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

If that happens: Don't watch shit and certainly don't pay for shit.

Even if nothing good is made for years, I guarantee there are millions of hours of undiscovered movie and series content for you to find in older releases. These companies are going to consolidate more and more, and will churn out sequels, spin offs, low effort movies, AI trash and easy cash-grabs. We need to not watch that shit and let these companies die. Pick the indie movies. Pick better quality older stuff. Wait for however long it takes for the industry to get over its unacceptable enshitification.

Games have the same problem. It is your responsibility to not pay for this micro transaction hell.

[–] Foni@piefed.zip 3 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Yes, of course, but the meme gives the idea that by pirating it no longer matters if things continue more and more towards enshitification, I do care, I hope it doesn't happen, it's not like I can do anything to change it, but it does make me very sad that we continue walking in the wrong direction more and more

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 1 points 4 hours ago

if things continue more and more towards enshitification, I do care, I hope it doesn't happen

Inevitable I'm afraid and quite far progressed in many industries. The sad part is that it doesnt even matter if we refuse their product. There are more than enough people willing to keep paying them billions.

[–] thingAmaBob@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I think ultimately that won’t be an issue in the long run. This is definitely a possibility, but there are other countries, other independent artists, and technological advances that allow (or will allow) creators to release good stories. I believe the people will find a way, somehow, even if things suck temporarily.

[–] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 7 hours ago

Shorter theatrical release times mean I can see more back catalogue in the theatres, right?

Right?

[–] remon@ani.social 7 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I'd very much welcome shorter theatrical release times.

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)
[–] remon@ani.social 13 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Because it means I'll get to watch them sooner (I don't do cam rips).

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

So, are they not going to do DVD and Blu-Ray releases for warner films? Because Netflix crap never comes to DVD.

[–] MathematicalMagpie@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 hours ago

There is reason to care even if you don't pay, as it's likely to affect media production.

[–] scroll_responsibly@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Too soon. Ellison’s Paramount is mounting a hostile takeover of Warner Brothers that may supersede this.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Is it weird that both options are horrific and dystopian?

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 2 points 18 minutes ago

can't help but feel like either way any side buying loses $ WBD is going out of business because they can't make $ off their mountain pile of IP's...why would it be any different for netflix or paramount. the 4-5 media companies already effectively have a monopoly between themselves via cooperation, the people who are gokng to give then $ already are/have. all they can do now is drive more people away by enshittifying further

[–] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 2 points 41 minutes ago

No, I'd say you're having a normal, human reaction to this news.

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago
