This is the first time I'd heard about the "trump accounts". This looks like just another trump tantrum copying something Obama did. Obama created the "myRA" program in his last term in office which served the same purpose as these "trump accounts", except myRA could be used by low income adults too which received government subsidies to encourage personal contributions. Also the investments were in government bonds, not stocks.

trump took office in 2016 and canceled myRA 6 months after.

So they are donating money to help kids? Am I missing something?

[–] TheFogan@programming.dev 12 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I mean I guess the concept is that they are using a system that may not be so well trusted. On the surface there is some potential good, but it boils down to the government buying stocks. The fact that they are index funds make it a little less daunting, but at the end of the day it's kind of a door to stupid corruption. IE company bribes politicians, government chooses index funds to drive up the stock prices they want. Stocks they want go up... politicians and croneys dump their stock in them at a high price, those stocks go down.

Only red politicians! You'd better be specific around here.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 0 points 9 hours ago

You must be. This money is coming without my help (like the failed Obama myRA program). How much did I donate? Someone please share a source.

If you have kids the summary of this is: if your child is under 10 on January 1st 2025 they will get the $250 Dell donation if you open the Trump Account for them. If you have a child born during the trump presidency they get $1000 if you open the Trump account for them. Your median income for your zip code also has to be below $150k/yr for the Dell and Idk if for the $1k too.

Edit to add the kid needs a SSN
