Here lies the American economy. July 4th 1776- April 2nd 2025.

Crazy to think that US is only 248 years old. You had a good run.

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

There's a town near me called "new town" that's older than that.

[–] PurpleTentacle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

To be fair, this isn't quite the worst thing the US has done in those 248 years.

[–] carrion0409@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Its shocking we made it this long frankly

We probably can't even afford trump "I did that!" stickers anymore because the print media probably come from China.

[–] PurpleSkull@lemm.ee 8 points 1 day ago

I'm sure China would send us those for free.

"Yo, boss. I need a 54% raise to keep up with inflation. Pronto!"

Hahaha almost kept a straight face. I crack myself up.

you think companies will just use a flat amount to cover the 'tariff'? fat chance. this is america, they're gonna keep their percent-based margins, probably add to them, besides, to offset lower sales volumes.. and those profit margins get added at every link in the distribution chain. retail prices will be closer to double than 'only' 54% more.

You guys seen the entire list?

This is the king demanding tribute from ALL his vassals.

[–] Litebit@lemmy.world 16 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Won't it be the Americans paying for the higher priced goods?

[–] null_dot@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Yes it is, but because Americans will be broke and unable to buy things, it will hurt suppliers and their host countries too. As in "we're not gonna buy your stuff until you do what we want".

The situation for Australia is just plain nutty. Trump wants us to start importing American beef, and undo our federal pharmaceutical procurement thing, or endure a 10% tariff.

The thing is we don't export much to the US and there are other markets for our products. Also, we are pretty happy not having a US style health system thanks.

[–] TrippaSnippa@lemm.ee 2 points 9 hours ago

To expand on that further, the reasons why we don't import US beef are 1. we produce more than enough for ourselves and 2. most importantly we do not have mad cow disease in Australia, whereas the US does. US beef is a biosecurity risk, which we take very seriously.

our federal pharmaceutical procurement thing

It's called the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and it's basically the government being the single buyer for pharmaceuticals and then subsidising the cost to Australians. Big pharma hates it because if the government thinks they're ripping us off we just won't buy it and they'll basically be shut out of the Australian market. The government also will only buy drugs that are proven to be effective, so they can't unload useless junk or derivatives that are more expensive but otherwise the same

Did you think the comment meant someone else?

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 19 points 21 hours ago (5 children)

Trump had put massive tariffs on counties that export fabrics, textiles, clothes etc to USA.

How many Americans are considering to be nudist?

[–] RageAgainstTheRich@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

Nudism!? That is anti christian! Devils temptations! Something something. /s

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 3 points 19 hours ago

I am a never-nude and this is literally going to destroy me.

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 2 points 9 hours ago

Clothes are a social construct!

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 hours ago

didn't Texas technically ban cloths in schools since they don't grow on a human naturally in the process of trying to ban cat eared headbands?

[–] SilverCode@lemm.ee 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

[–] Wahots@pawb.social 5 points 9 hours ago

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 10 hours ago
