So, it's either healthcare subsidies or food? You can't have both? Even though we had both before Republicans took it all away, so they could give tax breaks to Trump's rich donors?

Fuck these assholes.

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 199 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It's also a bit of PR nightmare for the GOP. Trump defying the court order shifts the blame back onto them.

[–] FancyPantsFIRE@lemmy.world 109 points 1 day ago (3 children)

In a less polarized and post truth world you’d probably be right. I fear however that the solid 36-37% maga base will never find an issue that can’t be spun or rationalized. In the magasphere this situation seems to be framed as the GOP stepping up to fight against free health care for illegal immigrants which seems divorced from reality.

It's not an accident...

When Nixon resigned, Roger Ailes wrote a memo that accidentally ended up in the icon presidential library:

The memo – called, simply enough, “A Plan For Putting the GOP on TV News” – is included in a 318-page cache of documents detailing [Roger] Ailes’ work for both the Nixon and George H.W. Bush administrations that we obtained from the Nixon and Bush presidential libraries. Through his firms REA Productions and Ailes Communications, Inc., Ailes served as paid consultant to both presidents in the 1970s and 1990s, offering detailed and shrewd advice ranging from what ties to wear to how to keep the pressure up on Saddam Hussein in the run-up to the first Gulf War.

The memo explains why television was the way to go:

Today television news is watched more often than people read newspapers, than people listen to the radio, than people read or gather any other form of communication. The reason: People are lazy. With television you just sit—watch—listen. The thinking is done for you.

https://www.poynter.org/reporting-editing/2011/memo-from-1970-a-plan-for-putting-the-gop-on-tv-news/

They knew that if they owned the media, they could control what people thought, and no republican president would ever have to resign due to public outcry again.

Luckily, he was held back by federal regulations, until a good ole capitalist from Arkansas got elected and decided anyone should be able to own media in America:

The stated intention of the law was to "let anyone enter any communications business – to let any communications business compete in any market against any other."[5] In practice, it gave way to one of the largest consolidations of the telecommunications sector in history - as such, it is often described as an attempt to deregulate the American broadcasting and telecommunications markets due to technological convergence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunications_Act_of_1996

After that it was gloves off and the billionaires gobbled up every aspect of the "news" industry and maintain almost exclusive control over what a majority of Americans hear.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

TBF, the problem with media was well underway before Clinton came along. The Fairness Doctrine being done away with under Ronnie Raygun opened the floodgates.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 21 points 1 day ago

Trump is posting on social media that Biden's administration was just giving SNAP benefits away. His idiot supporters are gonna believe it.

I think by saying he'll defy a court order, he's letting the supreme court know they have to okay whatever bullshit he comes up with. Otherwise, it will become obvious that they can't do jack shit.

If the government can't afford to feed and heal the people, they shouldn't be building a ballroom. I was taught in school to pay for your needs before your wants.

In the end it's going to be neither. Because once you give way on one front, it is proven that you'll negotiate.

I feel like dems should add to their list of demands- if the Rs dont agree to reverse course on Healthcare now, dems will not agree to reopen until all missed snap benefits are paid back retroactively- if it goes another week, they will not vote until ice is fully refunded, etc

"sound the alarm", horseshit. Just file the articles of impeachment and make the senators vote openly that they believe the executive branch ignoring a court order is okay. Senators should have to openly say it's okay to not remove someone for not following the rules /"laws" of the republic. Then as Trump keeps fucking everything up the Senators will have to realize either A. They are willing to surrender their job/career/ country to back a tryant,or B. They need to jump ship.

If its fine to not listen to the courts, then there is no reason for congress to exist. Their job is to write legislation that the courts ensure breakers of that legislation are punished.

They should have done so on many other occasions, but their failures are only adding up.

[–] oxysis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 39 points 1 day ago (3 children)

File the articles of impeachment over every single illegal action he is undertaking. Make it so congress is constantly dealing with impeachment hearing every second of every day till he is dead and buried.

While doing that make sure that you call for a constitutional convention, not an amendment or a series if amendments. A full on new constitution is needed to clear the shit out.

While the House of Representatives remains out have all the democratic representatives meet and broadcast it publicly. Do that every single day, talk policy and reforms and ask republican representatives to join the meeting. Make it painfully obvious that the democrats want to have a functioning government and not be held out like this endlessly.

Anyways tangent over.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You do not want a constitutional convention in this political climate. Amending the constitution requires 3/4 of state legislatures to ratify the amendment. Considering a solid majority of states have Republican controlled legislatures, the only things we're likely to get from a convention are amendments banning DEI initiatives and trans people in sports, or something even worse.

Another impeachable offense.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think he wants to pave a road made of impeachable offenses.

After midterms. These dems better put on their big girl panties and start impeaching and imprisoning this entire administration and the Supreme Court immediately. No mercy project 2029!

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 29 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They absolutely need to, but I'd bet real money they wont.

"I will withold food from them, unless Democrats let me take their healthcare"

Since he is ignoring courts now, what's stopping him from doing that anyway, even after government is open? The bill already severely cut snap benefits, and instructed agencies to stop reporting on hunger level in US, so it is not like he cares.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 day ago

They already took the healthcare, Democrats want to put it back.

Looking at last night's election results, that really worked out great for him. Lol.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (15 children)

We're approaching a huge turning point in US (and world) history. Either republicans are going to mostly lose for a long time (at least 6 years if I were to guess), maybe until they demonstrate they've changed, OR they are going to succeed at rigging or cancelling elections so they don't have to give up power. I don't think we can expect much in between those two extremes. Makes my stomach queasy as hell to think about.

[–] TheHighRoad@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Which is why everyone should be prepared for them to inflict physical violence upon us, because it's coming either way.

Bullshit, the POS does not want Adelita Grijalva to be sworn in and 40 million hungry people could lead to an increase in violence, which is exactly what he wants.

Why would anyone expect Donald J Trump, convicted felon, to uphold the rule of law? Mother fucker can't even follow it himself lol

[–] LoafedBurrito@lemmy.dbzer0.com 33 points 1 day ago (3 children)

But then when reporters questioned Levitt, she barked back that he IS NOT withholding them and they are being sent out as needed.

Why is it that the president makes some unhinged, mental social media post, then the white house has to translate that for the media? This is absurd and they all need to be removed from office for incompetence, then charged for all the crimes they have committed.

Sure, why not another constitutional crisis.

It's not really a crisis -- eventually he can go back to using regular toilet paper.

Can we create a Judicial Guard that is basically a force to enforce court rulings? Like whatever they have now is clearly not working. This happened under Andrew Jackson too, so don't tell me they never saw this coming.

Can we please for the love of God have a judge actually enforce their order for once? He has shown over and over that he's just going to do what he wants. The rest of us would have to sleep on a jail bench for a few days then still be forced to comply.

So the message to poor Americans from Trump and the Republicans is "If we can't take away your health insurance assistance, we'll take away your food assistance."

And all so that they can pay for tax breaks for billionaires.

They're psychopaths. They really are - they are, and rather self-evidently, entirely unconstrained by morals, principles, empathy or conscience, so meet the DSM standards.

That don't just need to be voted out of office - they need to be institutionalized.

[–] QuantumTickle@lemmy.zip 22 points 1 day ago

There's one judge facing impeachment over standing up to Trump. It's time for the courts to nut up or shut up.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 18 points 21 hours ago

Let that Federal Judge know that if he want to deputize citizens to carry out his orders, I will gladly help.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

So when is that contempt warrant being issued?

[–] aarch0x40@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

They’re probably just going to spend it on getting their weave anyhow. /s

Nothing will happen until they are made to comply with physical force.

Or basically - using the exact same measures of enforcement that would be applicable to a normal citizen.

[–] hume_lemmy@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago

Hopefully they remember that he'll do it anyway. Deals with him are worthless.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

FFS. So glad that SCOTUS gave this douchebag carte blanche.

I wish the US Marshals could just be sent to pick up Taco and give him the same treatment ICE has been giving people...detain him for a few weeks in an undisclosed location.
