Looking at last night's election results, that really worked out great for him. Lol.
We're approaching a huge turning point in US (and world) history. Either republicans are going to mostly lose for a long time (at least 6 years if I were to guess), maybe until they demonstrate they've changed, OR they are going to succeed at rigging or cancelling elections so they don't have to give up power. I don't think we can expect much in between those two extremes. Makes my stomach queasy as hell to think about.
Which is why everyone should be prepared for them to inflict physical violence upon us, because it's coming either way.
People keep saying stuff like this, but there's basically nothing that will turn me into a violent person outside of defending myself in the moment. I don't own weapons and I don't want to own them. I'd actually probably rather die than fight through that kind of a world.
I'm prepared for insults and scolding but it's true for me and many people. No amount of people saying "buy guns" is going to change me. And I suspect most people are like this.
I'm right there with you, but there are many ways to prepare without resorting to participating. I think the mental preparation is the key, because it's tough to stay home on election day when doing so is akin to putting the barrel against your own head.
I see. Sorry for making a false assumption about what you meant.
TBF, this particular person didn't say buy guy, they said be ready for them to inflict physical violence, and honestly, it's reasonably likely. Maybe not on you, or me, but surely for many and it'll be quite visible.
That's fair.
I am supremely doubtful with all the infighting on the left with the literal child mentality "but they're both bad!!!1!" bothsiders, and the "nothing ever happens" crowd who thinks things will magically just go back to normal that it will be the good outcome.
I mean we've seen a number of positives recently like
But that's just not enough.
They are in charge of all the institutions required for a fair or even approximately close to """fair""" by old standards election and there are literally no means for recourse that aren't just straight up violence, which despite the edgy people online's messages, no one actually has the stomach for and is therefore just words used to procrastinate.
I don't think it matters. Democrats aren't gonna seize power and be like "Oh, my God! Would you look at all these mechanisms to abuse power! Better get rid of them!"
I don't understand your point. Democrats also historically haven't been the party of outright evil and fascism.
That there will be no turning point. Once the mechanisms for fascism have been established, unless an actual revolution happens, the next government will always abuse them.
So by this logic, if Democrats win back control of our government, they will also deploy the military to maintain a police state, arrest and prosecute political enemies, and deport immigrants by the thousands? I can see your point to some degree but I don't really buy any of the things I listed would be the case.
No but they do like the idea of keeping their options open. There's a reason they haven't codified so many basic protections and relied on historical precedence and decorum instead.
And even with Trump they haven't shown a willingness to admit their mistake and learn their lessons in this regard. They'll write Trump off as a fluke and keep making all the same mistakes, including the repetition of many far-right talking points.
Holy lack of reading comprehension and historical education.
Alright cool. Lovely interaction
I don't know what to tell you, friend. Don't argue in bad faith if you don't wanna get bad faith responses 🤷🏻
The Great Switch: How Republicans and Democrats Flipped Ideologies https://www.studentsofhistory.com/ideologies-flip-Democratic-Republican-parties
I'm aware. Wasn't really referring to that far in the past.
If it's flipped once it can flip again. The Dems may not curtently be fascist, but they certainly are authoritarian.
I agree and am also quite queasy.
Rigging and cancelling. There has been no better opportunity.
