/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

You'd think that starfleet would realize that $100,000 in 2025 won't even buy an old busted house in the middle of nowhere, let alone someplace that's actually secure.

[–] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

She has 5 bars, though, so wouldn't that be $500,000? Half a million is almost enough for a so called "starter home"

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There are places in the world you could live an easy life for quite a long while on US$500,000.

[–] AppleTea@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh for sure. Keep working, throw it in a low-risk low-yield index and use the interest to supplement your income. A modest 5% return gives you an extra 25k a year.

But as others have pointed out, the real problem comes from the awkward questions that come from trying to convert the gold into cash.

I mean one can always turn to the mafia

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's your answer to everything!

Need money laundering? Turn to the mafia

Need a business advantage? The mafia

Annoyed by neighbors? Also mafia

Need help with your homework? Mafia

Can't decide what to wear? Ask the mafia!

They're just really good at what they do!

[–] Delta_V@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

At current exchange rates, 50oz of gold would sell for $201,050. It would be a good down payment on a starter home, but less than half the total cost of ownership.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

No, but it might cover groceries for a week (or two if you lay off the Grey Poupon).

[–] nandeEbisu@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

They messed up not telling her exactly which crypto bubbles were starting and when to get out.

Fun fact: in german speaking countries (Austria, Germany and Switzerlamd), the Latinum is a certificate to prove one's latin language skills.

Imagine a little german boy's confusion about people in the future using these certificates for currency (like, confusion for a few moments before logic kicked in and I reckoned these to be two different things. I was like 7-10, okay?)

[–] negativenull@piefed.world 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Did said certificates at least have a gold border?

(that is fascinating though!)

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 9 points 1 day ago

I think its customary to have the borders littered with Asterix characters

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think there isn't even a physical, paper certificate to frame or border, just an entry in a school report. I'm not sure though, I had french and spanish lessons in school, no latin.

[–] MsFlammkuchen@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 20 hours ago

I just looked it up. It is a sentence in my graduation diploma (Abiturzeugnis):

Dieses Zeugnis schließt den Nachweis des Latinums gemäß der Vereinbarung über das Latinum und das Graecum (Beschluss der Kultusministerkonferenz vom 22. September 2005 in der jeweils geltenden Fassung) ein.

This diploma includes the certificate of the Latinum according to the agreement about the Latinum and Graecum (Decision of the conference of ministers of education of september 22^nd 2005 in the version currently in force).

The Graecum is the same as the Latinum but for ancient greek.

Holy shit I didn't realize Mae transitioned. Good for her!

Get in the Real Life (™) archives. It’s a really beautifully told story.

Yes, and the comics around it are absolutely amazing!

Here’s a link. The arc started at the end of June 2020, and ran through the middle of July. The strips after that revolve around coming out to her wife, and what happened there.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Woah, Real Life is still going. I haven’t read that in ages!

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure it officially stopped at one point, years ago, while I was still checking in on it. Did it come back or did I make up a story to avoid the realization that I'm too lazy to keep up on a simple website?

[–] grue@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

I don't think it's ever "officially" stopped, but it has gone on several unexplained hiatuses for long stretches of time.

In fact, my initial reaction seeing this was "holy shit, is she back?!" And immediately check for new comics, because today's is the first one since April (edit: last year!) and I'd been low-key worried something had happened to her.

I actually just read the entire thing for the first time last month (1999 through to the modern day), and I had to go look up her social media accounts to make sure she was okay when I got to the last strip in April 2024.

I’m really excited that it’s back, but a bit bummed that I need to follow it in real-time now. 😁

[–] negativenull@piefed.world 5 points 1 day ago

I had no idea either! Started in 1999!

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Regardless of latinum I'm pretty sure the bank would be asking a lot of questions in regards to how some suburbanites came upon 4 gold bricks without any markings

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, they should have busted some American gold eagles or Krugerrand out of a museum or something.

Snatch up Nazi gold bars from subs that wouldn't have been found until 50 years later...but then you'd immediately join the orange turd's inner circle.

[–] joyjoy@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

She gave you latinum because they ruined the economy and don't actually have money in the future.

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 3 points 1 day ago

"For the remainder of this Craigslist ad meetup the Temporal Prime Directive is revoked."

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Section 31, so the buyer is probably a romulan from the future. She should kid nap the buyer and torture them for scientific advancements she can then make early in the name of the Federation.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That’s a better story than the Section 31 movie.

[–] mkwt@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I would expect the price or relative value of gold to latinum to collapse once asteroid mining becomes viable.
