I fucking hate that I need to defend this guy, but like, have you guys seen the video? It was very clearly a joke. A joke. There are so, so many things to get pissed off about when it comes to him alone, focusing on a dumb joke is embarrassing. If a democrat said the same thing nobody here would bat an eye.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 41 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Very clearly a joke.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rOl7Z_dYDM

Thanks for pointing that out, had a hard time believing he said that seriously.

[–] 2xar@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, he was joking. But JFC, what a self important, egotistical prick! He manages to brag about him being the VP twice in under 30 seconds.

Even he can't believe it happened.

[–] dQw4w9WgXcQ@lemm.ee 17 points 2 days ago

Absolutely. With these kind of focuses, the GOP doesn't have to make conscientious efforts of distraction. People make dumb jokes. People have small hands. People have combovers, bad skin, weird voices and big bellies. Bringing up these things will just start unimportant conversations in field of politics. Instead focus on actual policies which are fucking over people.

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 9 points 2 days ago

Lemmy doesn't get jokes.

[–] I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

No, we should clearly take things out of context so that the right has plenty of examples of liberals being overreacting idiots. That way they can use those examples to ignore actual, valid criticism. I mean after all, why would they believe someone on the left telling them that America is turning into a fascist state if that person is too stupid to recognize an obvious joke?

Vance is such a smoothbrain, he probably thought it's called Greenland because of how lush it is.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 89 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Calling it Greenland was always a branding exercise.

[–] erusuoyera@sh.itjust.works 41 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Vance in Las Vegas " Where the fuck are all the meadows?!?"

[–] frezik@midwest.social 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

TIL what Las Vegas means. But apparently, there was originally some meadows there?

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 13 points 3 days ago

Las Vegas was lush and green when it was settled. As more people arrived, the spring water that kept it that way dried up

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

That would require learning a piece of a language other than English …. He’d be an illegal immigrant, hardened criminal, gang member. That mascara is a sure sign of Tren de Aragua membership

I like to think of it more that the old Norse had a good sense of humor.

[–] TwanHE@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Well the guy was banished from Iceland IIRC, so he had a good reason to hype up this new found land.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago

No, no, the newfound land is a scooch southwest

Geography has never been my strong point, but even I know Greenland is the cold one and Iceland is the green one.

[–] Zier@fedia.io 8 points 3 days ago

No silly Iceland is a supermarket!

[–] Damage@feddit.it 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"Hey Donald, I've got new information, we should reevaluate this Greenland thing"

[–] ChillPenguin@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

"have you heard about it? It sounds beautiful! Not cold or snowy like Iceland."

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 65 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Is this.. is this like, for real? Sorry I can't tell anymore..

[–] captainjaneway@lemmy.world 65 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Yes but he was obviously joking. Still a dumb joke.

You can see it in context here.

[–] Ilovethebomb@lemm.ee 30 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Are you telling me Lemmy has missed an obvious joke?

That's unheard of.

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

It is legitimately harder to tell in recent days what is real, what is fiction, what is sarcastic, what is satire. Such is the pathetic state of the world.

... The Bush era joke is still holding up:

Americans learn geography via which countries they (threaten to) invade.

... I guess it is just fully beyond a joke and is now just completely literally true.

[–] ruk_n_rul@monyet.cc 47 points 3 days ago

Leif Erikson's trolling continues to claim victims

[–] Petter1@lemm.ee 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just another reminder how stupid the people elected in US really are…

[–] Secret300@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah but some of them weren't elected. America is due for a civil war

[–] Petter1@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I still have hope for non-violent fix.
But that hope is melting fast…

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

"I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed, it might be done."

[–] Sabata11792@ani.social 20 points 3 days ago

It's named Greenland to fool the Americans out of invading Iceland.

[–] nuko147@lemm.ee 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hey Boss, did you know that Greenland is mostly covered with ice? Why we want it anyway? - JD Vance

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Isn't it like one of those "kids first geography fun fact" stuff that gets taught everywhere? Like you'd have to be actively disinterested in the world not to know it?

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

For Greenland is a hell of a place

It's a place that's never green

Where there's ice and there's snow and the whalefishes blow

And the daylight's seldom seen, brave boys

The daylight's seldom seen

[–] Azzu@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago (2 children)

And people think they're immune to propaganda. Probably the majority read this meme and think Vance is just that stupid.

I mean he probably is that stupid, but not because of this particular instance of making a joke about the cold.

[–] tauren@lemm.ee 5 points 3 days ago

I was about to say that we shouldn't except factual information in a community where people post memes and jokes, but to my surprise, the rules of this community say "no misinformation". So I guess we should expect factual information here.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And it's not even all that green either.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 7 points 3 days ago

It was ironically named. Greenland is not green and Iceland is actually quite green.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Every day my mind is blown how actually stupid these people are. I wake up tead the news and wonder if it's The Onion or what

[–] entwine413@lemm.ee 10 points 3 days ago (3 children)

He was clearly joking when he said that. Like, there are a million legitimate things to pick on him about. Let's not invent them.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I will bet money that both Vance and Trump confused Greenland for Iceland.

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

The centuries old gambit of switching names between Iceland and Greenland finally pays off!

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 13 points 3 days ago

Another victim of Red's og scam to get Icelandic vikings to move there

[–] crazyhotpasta@lemm.ee 12 points 2 days ago

USA education in a nutshell

[–] Vespair@lemm.ee 10 points 2 days ago

Bold of you to assume they believe in controversial hypotheses like "latitude".

[–] ferretfacefrankburns@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

It's full of snow, and not the kind Jr likes

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

Fuck Vance and cheeto and Elmo

Having said that, I genuinely believe he was just joking in this instance

[–] LordWiggle@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Bro never seen a world map

Cold? Lol, they should live in russia, the regime they are loyal to. Experience the actual coldness.

[–] SpicyLizards@reddthat.com 5 points 3 days ago
