The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

I don't have a Reddit account but every day, Popular has a bunch of subreddits in a different language, Indian subreddits, or weird smut.

Thought it was just me since I'm not logged in.

I know! I feel the same way about American subs and American comments! No matter what the subject matter, no matter how interesting or even not interesting it is, most of the comments will be related to America! I wish there was some button to press that could purge all mentions of any said country, especially America. Yeah, we know you’re a racist fascist shithole, you always were, so well done for catching up with everyone else in realizing this, but I’m sick to death of reading about it. Give me some non-Yankee Doodle cats to watch!

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh yeah? Well if you don't love America, you can just leave!

(Yeah, I know, but I just couldn't resist.)

"We invented the internet after all. And that includes the fediverse."

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 13 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Tim Berners-Lee invented HTTP, web servers and browsers, and is English.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Didn't he do it in CERN, an institution in switzerland?

Although ARPANET was started by the US?

[–] zabadoh@ani.social 6 points 2 days ago

Why yes! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Berners-Lee#Career_and_research

[–] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah the CIXP building in CERN has his original paper printed as a poster hanging in the doorway :-)

[–] Osan@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Dude has the most English sounding name ever.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I guess it bears pointing out, but still: whoosh! on you

[–] Lyra_Lycan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

On Voyager you can block instances, communities, users, posts and keywords from appearing. I recommend adding to the list every time a new intolerant prick starts stirring shit up.

And Reddit is a sinking, stinking corporate ship. Art is destroyed. Adults are alienated. Innocent folk are stripped of their rights to speak. There's nothing left for the community but fascists, conservatives and bot scripts.

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 10 points 2 days ago

This comment reminds me of that time my american ass and all my american family were in america and americad all over the place with how america we were.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Use filter words. Works well in the Boost app for Android. The more Ameeican specific words you add, the more American stuff you can get rid off (congress, MAGA, Elon, Trump, republicans, etc etc). Doesnt catch nearly all American stuff, but reduces it significantly.

Phoebe: "Enshittification has a specific meaning"

Joey: "Enshittification is when something happens that I don't like"

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 50 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Uh... that's literally the point of r/popular, it shows you popular stuff.

[–] Sprawl@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

While true, you’d think with all the fancy algorithms social media tries to implement these days that it would use the general country and the default language as indicators. I guess that stuff only matters to them when they are feeding us ads.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, sure but then it's not r/popular anymore. Any kind of personalization would defeat the point of the category. I'm sure you're not getting Indian posts in your own feed (not sure about the state of personalization on r/all).

I typically lurk on All and see posts from the German language communities all the time. I don't have a clue what any of the posts mean but they seem fun. I hope the Indian subreddits are the same way.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

I think it's hillarious that as I'm scrolling through lemmy it's suddenly like: GERFRETSWHEILEZAUHAUERFLURGEN WÜT MAUKERWARPSLPOT

Then back to english

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

From my previous experience browsing Reddit, the Indian subs were obvious low effort, absurd memes or shitposts. I think the only serious one I saw was religious. 🤷‍♂️

E: a word

Oh no, the country with three times more people than the entire Anglosphere is starting to have a presence on Reddit proportionate to its numbers. How horrible.

What a shame India doesn't have a government like China's to quarantine its people behind a firewall so you can keep pretending Americans run the Internet.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 21 points 2 days ago

I was going to make a counterargument, but you're right, this is literally the point of r/popular.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago

I think the current Indian government might actually go for that lol

[–] edible_funk@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

While there's undoubtedly plenty of racist pricks, the ability to filter out subs based on predominant language seems like a feature that already should have been available. I don't care they're there, I just don't want my pages cluttered with posts I can't read.

Fellas, is this thread racist?

And god, so many of them are just absolutely cram-packed with the most obnoxiously incel behavior. The actual hindi posts are not great about sexism, but they're so much better than the creepy "All women are bitches" redpillers larping in racist broken english accents that are most of what you see on the "indian" subreddits.

Do you ever wander into a Filipino sub and tfoggalo mpaktak angdoo wopadidamo ardvarawak?

[–] Hubi@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The mixing of English and Filipino or Indian is the worst. I start reading a comment and always think I'm having a stroke halfway through.

India has nearly a billion internet users. Some content will be popular on a global level because of that. Filter by whatever little corner of the world you're in if that's a problem for you. There's enough space here for everyone.

Can’t users

a. filter by Hot in a given country

b. block subreddits from their Hot feed

?

I don’t remember there being any sort of customizable language filter for one’s feed

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

A. No

B. You used to, but now you just select see fewer and hope.

[–] s@piefed.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

...stay for the empathy?? Lmao

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Friends has to be the most overrated TV show of all time. It's so painfully unfunny, and I can't help but judge a person when they tell me they're a fan.

Why are you using popular?

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I don't think I could bear for one second browsing Reddit without having the subs carefully curated to my preferences.

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 5 points 20 hours ago

With the recent announcement of openAI giving Indians free access for a year, just you wait, the AI slop is going to be taking over everything.

[–] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 days ago

I do find it funny how Reddit and especially IMDb is just filled to them brim with Indian content they apparently think I want to see

[–] HeyMrDeadMan@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Funny because this is me, and German subs on Lemmy. And it's hilarious because literally every time it happens, I re-read the headline at least two or three times thinking to myself "why can't I understand this? Am I drunk?"
