Idk why lol, sad music ironically makes me feel better. It's kinda like crying... lets out the endorphins.

Yes. Blues exists for pretty much that reason.

I fucking love the blues. Grew up in austin Texas with it. I often run into a barriers getting people to listen to it out in California. Like some people might need some modernization of it. For that, check out Bad Luck City - RL Burnside

Man, I'm always up for some Burnside. Blues is remarkable for its ability to draw together diverse people. There was this small blues bar in Copenhagen called Mojo. Tiny place - could seat maybe twenty, max capacity perhaps twice that. Always packed. Live gigs every evening of the week, something like five dollars admission at the door - God only know how they managed to pull that off. Some of the best live music I've experienced and in good company ranging all the way from teenagers to people in their eighties, all having a good time together.

Edit: And while we're on the topic of modernized Burnside: Someday Baby (feat. Lyrics Born)

Every once in a while I need a good cry session just to get it out of my system and feel better. I have a playlist titled “Cry Baby”.

After I wash my face, I’ll listen to some dance and techno while I have my frozen gel mask over my swollen eyes.

Like most people, music moves me…

Sometimes. There are moments while doing so that I feel heard or related to. Other times, it's just to let it out.

For me it's always more on the sad side. When I'm down, and I start to listen to my kind of sad music, it mostly starts to go down the real bad spirale, which kinda means... well, selfharm.

Sorry, wanted to censor some stuff, but I'm new to this site. :c

You can do spoilers like this🌸:

And just for the record, you don't have to memorise this. The lemmy website has a spoiler button, and most apps will have it too. Voyager has it in the ... menu when replying.

I tried doing that when my first girlfriend broke up with me back in the day and it had mixed results... It felt a tad performative and it kinda took me out of it, lol. But my wife does it! I guess it's always better to process the emotion and music helps?

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I think the word you're looking for is 'commiserating'?

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Misery loves company. Helps to know other people have been through sad times too.

[–] NONE_dc@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

All the time. In general, the music I listen to always matches my mood. I listen to happy music when I'm happy and sad music when I'm sad. It's like a form of catharsis.

Listening to happy things when you're sad can feel like the music invalidates your feelings, and that can make you feel worse. Sad music serves exactly the purpose you describe: to cry, even when you have no tears left, and let go of all the bad stuff inside you.

[–] ValiantDust@feddit.org 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Well, "misery still delights to trace its semblance in another's case."

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 4 points 5 days ago

Yes, I tend to roll that way. Then again, when you're a depressed, suicidal priest, it can also work the other way...

I do this as well but it's like a "deepening" of being sad. Like I'm thinking "Fuck it, if I'm gonna feel sad right now then let's feel fucking sad." Lol

Sometimes I am sad but I don't really feel sad, or feel sad enough... Music helps me feel the feelings I already have, but have a hard time feeling. Some of those feelings are sad and the sad ones are just as important to feel. I guess what I'm describing is catharsis.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 4 days ago

sometimes. when your a little sad its nice to get something cheery but when your real sad sometimes the only way out is through.

[–] MattTheProgrammer@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

If the music helps you process the emotion then generally you'll feel better afterword. That's just how it works.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 3 points 5 days ago

There's one song that immediately makes me cry with the first lyric. I save it for just that occasion, when I know I need to get it out. It helps so much.

[–] Sparkles@fedia.io 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I listen to happy music when I’m sad, and sad music when I’m happy. No idea why, however, my brain just wants it that way.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

This is me too when I think about it. Cool...

I almost never feel actually sad though. Just normal. Sad songs are just better in that mood. If im actually sad, I put on uplifting music.

Sad music is emotional and means something. Happy is kind of one dimensional and short. I dont know if people are actually happy most of their time or if its the short moments.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

Yes, I like to listen to sad music when I’m sad. And angry when I’m angry. It helps me to feel better.

[–] Carrolade@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Yeah, but I like to try to use it to move in a certain direction emotionally. Like, instead of pure sad, I'll put on something sad and wistful to move a little in that direction, or sad and angry to shift a little that way, depending on my current needs.

Like, this is sad and wistful, with a touch of determination:

https://youtu.be/es9MQweZzvc

This is sad and angry:

This helps avoid wallowing in the pure sad feeling, which I don't really like.

I've had the privilege, or curse, however you wanna look at it, to randomly listen to and organize around 26,000 or so songs as best as I could. I managed to organize like 650 complete albums, and that was only like a 20% dent in the entire collection.

I've become burned out on everyday music, I like obscure crazy music anymore. Welcome to the Internet...

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

you ever heard of the KLF?

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

No, sorry I haven't..?

[–] qevlarr@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Beware sad media when you're depressed, it will worsen your depression. Instead, watch your 'comfort movies' and cheesy romcoms

[–] AstralPath@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

Nah man. Depressive Suicidal Black Metal has brought me back to reality multiple times. Sometimes leaning into your emotions and allowing them to exist lifts a weight off your shoulder.

DSBM made me feel like I wasn't alone. It made a big difference. It can be catharsis in its own dark way.

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

More like dark music

[–] Texas_Hangover@lemmy.radio 1 points 4 days ago

Yep! Type O Negative is my sad jam. I fucking love Type O Negative. RIP Pete Steel.

I don’t have too much sadness these days. Rage, on the other hand, shucks howdy have I got acres of rage, and listening to metal makes me feel less angry, so kind of the same scope.

[–] Katana314@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

This exact feeling, I think, is the entire plot of Inside Out. Feeling sad is often the best way to express what’s in you.

[–] FuyuhikoDate@feddit.org 0 points 5 days ago

I think thats the most normal thing (and one of the healthiest methods) I know to cry if I really need to. I have a dedicated Playlist called "everybody knows shits fucked" (yeah if you know you know ;)) if I am not in the mood with music, I give https://www.cryonceaweek.com/ a try.
