why would you like to do tourism in the USA after all the news?

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Most people don't care about anything and have zero principles, they are more passionate about sports teams or reality TV than anything actually happening in the world so long as it does not negatively affect their life in a way that's obvious to them, they couldn't care less, they simply exist to consume

Only down 20%?

[–] Mynameisallen@lemmy.zip 24 points 2 days ago

I want our tourism to plummet badly enough that companies start to turn on this fucking administration

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

That is already a long standing recommendation for China and the US.

So free speech is dead and you have no privacy

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Free speech and privacy only apply to citizens*

*Exceptions apply to all minorities and Democrats

Also USA: "Why are no tourists coming any more?"

New Rule: Don't bring your phone data with you as you cross borders. Wipe it, and reinstall when you get to the other side.

"Don't visit fascist countries" sounds easier...

[–] MojoMcJojo@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can you link to any useful guides for newbies?

Thank you. Wish there was a quick wipe app you could activate in an emergency. Maybe it would just activate factory reset or something. Tie it to a button or sequence of buttons

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

I'm pretty sure there is. If my phone is stolen, for instance, I can wipe it from my computer, presumably as long as it's not been placed in a 'Faraday cage'. In iOS there is a FindMy app which has an 'erase' function. I don't know other phone OS', but it sure seems that would be handy. And my Androidy friends would never let on that their OS wasn't as cool or cooler than iOS. ;-)

I'm not vetting these links. I'm supposed to be working, so I better get back to that. :-D

GrapheneOS has this. Duress passcode. Type in the code and it wipes everything and shuts the phone down.

FREE-DUMB!!!!

[–] stevedice@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Aww, fuck. I'm going to Las Vegas next February. I already don't have social media, should I just buy another phone?

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 14 points 2 days ago

Unless you want to sanitize your phone or risk the US government taking information off it, yes. You can get a burner phone pretty cheap. Don't sign into any accounts before crossing the border.

My company has given clean phones and computers to employees before international travel for a little while now, and snooping in other countries hasn't been as guaranteed as in the US now.

[–] GaryGhost@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How do they get access to your phone? Can you say no or do they just take your phone?

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Basic searches involve federal agents manually scrolling through a phone, while advanced searches use advanced tools to copy and analyze data. Advanced searches do require officers to have reasonable suspicion or cause, but failure to comply can result in detentions.

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Correct. The border search exception is essentially a run around the fourth amendment and is a contentious subject in case law.

So simple deleting the apps from your phone won't be enough they have tech to snoop on your activities regardless. Guess I'll have to buy a new phone then, if I plan to travel in the future
