[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

Getting downvoted for the truth.

How often do you hear of other countries with the same issue?

[–] commiunism@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The shooter was trans, and some media + lots of online spaces are already spreading mental illness narratives. Wouldn't be surprised if this is going to get used against trans people in general, it's sad.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I didn't think that's confirmed. The shooter had long hair and was named "Robin," which is a very gender-neutral name. Do you have a source confirming they were trans?

[–] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

From the article:

Local news, Kare 11, confirmed the shooter’s name was Robin Westman, 23. Westman grew up in Richfield, and Westman’s mother worked at Annunciation school in some capacity. Westman applied in Dakota county to change their birth name from Robert to Robin because they identified as a woman, according to court documents obtained by the Guardian. That request was granted in January 2020.

[–] kescusay@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Thanks. I didn't see that in the article originally, though I may have just missed it. It's also possible the article was updated.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/minneapolis-catholic-school-shooting-rcna227591

"FBI Director Kash Patel said the shooter was “a male” born under a different first name.

The suspect's parent had filed for a legal name change to "Robin M Westman" in Dakota County in November 2019. The application was granted in January 2020, when Westman was 17, after a hearing."

I would still say that means nothing, people sometimes don't vibe with their names. Hell my great grandfather vibed with his nickname so much that I legit thought his name was Stew, it was not Stew his first name was Willard. I can change my last name no questions asked but as soon as someone changes their first name that's when it's weird.

That's not even getting into pseudonyms, I've been calling myself Vault online for years and I introduce myself as Beowulf to people I don't want knowing my actual name.

In the video scheduled to be posted on YouTube apparently there were more elements (talked about their own dressing style and not feeling either a man or a woman - according to some articles which translated the pages in russian).

I think this is overall irrelevant anyway. In their manifesto they go all over the place ideologically, from holocaust praise to trans rights, apparently. It's not like there was a consistent motivation behind, they were clearly unwell mentally - reporting depression and suicidal thoughts for years - and did the shooting to be killed.

My point was moreso that it's a bit odd that the immediate response to someone changing their first name is that they're trans or something. Especially since many cultures historically allowed people to change their names in accordance to their will, hell I think some parts of Greece your child name was a placeholder until you turned 16.

But yeah it's wholesale irrelevant as to what their identity was, what matters is that they did the act of shooting up a school. I'm more confused why they went after a Catholic school since they tend to be on the better end of religious schools, BYU and Liberty exist I severely doubt most folks would give a damn, note im joking no point going after a school when fucking Charlie Kirk still yet breathes.

"Westman's name was legally changed from Robert to Robin in 2020, Minnesota court records show. In the application the judge wrote: "Minor child identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification.""

[–] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Maybe if trans people weren't constantly treated like garbage they wouldn't lose their freakin minds and/or delete themselves.

[–] Voidist@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago

The culprit's mother was the one who helped her change her name from her deadname. It appears that, at least in this case, she wasn't totally surrounded by haters.

[–] BothsidesistFraud@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is there any evidence this person was "constantly treated like garbage"? There is no excuse for murdering children.

[–] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 23 hours ago

Is there any evidence this person was "constantly treated like garbage"?

Yes. They lived in the United States of America.

Thoughts, prayers, non action, repeat.

[–] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 18 points 2 days ago

People don't just wake up and randomly decide to go on a shooting spree. There's warning signs, planning and preparation. It's not hard to train agencies on this, do PSAs etc. This should also be included in the terrorism definition, or at least dealt with by terrorism departments or similar so there's a better standard of service.

So desensitized that I had to google school shooting to see if it was new or an old one. I really hate my country and the people that run this shit hole.

Edit:

There have been more than 140 shootings reported in elementary and secondary schools in 2025 thus far, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database.

God Fucking Damn! Pres. Little Dick, Kid Fucker, use that abuse power for good just once. Limit the amount of guns in this fucking country.

[–] agelord@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What kind of dystopia needs a database for school shooting!

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Limiting guns is probably one of the very few things Trump could do that might end with his ouster. His supporters are typically rabidly pro-gun.

Trump supporters are likely to ban "lunatics" from owning guns. when conservative media reports on shootings, the focus is on the "lunatic" rather than the easy availability of AR-15s.

the problem is who MAGA frames as "lunatics": leftists in general, trans people specifically. every time there's a mass shooting, rumors spread that the shooter was trans. usually it's a lie, but this time it's evidently true.

I think they're manufacturing consent for mental illness background checks, so they can list gender dysphoria as a mental illness and disarm us.

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago

Might help his supporters since they love using guns on themselves.

[–] Jack_Burton@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

August 27 is the 239th day of the year, so there's been a school shooting every 1.7 days this year so far.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not really though. The media has a really loose definition of "school shooting" so they can keep people scared.

To use a local example, two parents got in an argument outside a school, one pulled a gun and shot the other. A shooting at a school is not necessarily how people think of a "school shooting".

https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/michael-zakarneh-islamic-school-portland-shooting-southwest-capitol-highway/283-dd6e342d-7905-42da-ad7a-3cce7bf56a05

Always check the details before you believe the hype. The actual number is 8, which is 8 too many, but a far cry from 140.

https://www.edweek.org/leadership/school-shootings-this-year-how-many-and-where/2025/01

Even some of those aren't actually "school shootings" as the average person thinks of them:

3/4 in Baltimore, MD: "A 16-year-old student was shot and killed after being chased onto school property."

Nobody went to that school intending to kill students. They were intent on murdering one kid who happened to run on to school grounds.

https://www.wbaltv.com/article/lansdowne-high-school-student-shot-vigil-kamau-campbell/64106551

"Baltimore County police said the teen was outside a shopping center across the street from the school when someone got out of a car and opened fire. Campbell then ran toward school grounds, where he eventually collapsed, and was shot multiple times more."

That's a targeted killing, not a school shooting.

[–] Jack_Burton@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, a shooting occuring in, around, or near a school once every 1.7 days is still absolute fucking insanity and unacceptable in any rational society.

The media has a really loose definition of “school shooting” so they can keep people scared.

People should be scared. Whether it's 8 or 140 or 1000 it doesn't change the fact that Americans not only allow this to happen, they allow it to continue and won't do anything to stop it.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was on a jury, guy was charged with "dealing drugs within 1,000 feet of a school". They asked if anyone had any questions, so I asked "In a city like ours, is there any location NOT within 1/5th of a mile of a school?"

Yeah, I was dismissed from the jury. LOL.

Just because it's close to a school doesn't mean it's related to the school or the students.

"Buh, buh, THE CHILDREN!!! WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!" is the refrain they use to get you to give up rights.

[–] Jack_Burton@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Ok, I'll just be blunt haha. The number of shootings that occur in the US, regardless of where they occur, should not be accepted by a rational society.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

And yet in terms of overall crime, the US isn't even in the top 50:

[–] Bluefalcon@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago

How fucking sad is it that school shootings are washed out due to a pedo in the White house.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@midwest.social 7 points 2 days ago

I just wish these loons would stop bringing KMFDM into this. They don't stand for any of this.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Desensitized.

Don't care anymore.

[–] triptrapper@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What a shitty, heartless comment. I live in Minneapolis. Before today I might have read your comment and thought, "Well that's callous," but reading it today I feel angry. Keep that shit to yourself.

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Your fucking government refuses to take any meaningful action. Time and time and time and time and time again.

I dont blame anyone for becoming apathetic. Outrage does nothing. Complaints do nothing. Protests do nothing.

[–] triptrapper@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Is that what you would say to the 8- and 10-year-old who were killed on a Wednesday morning? You'd point out how they've been completely fucked by policies and culture they have no control over?

I'm not angry about anyone saying they're desensitized - we all are. But to read that little children were killed and take the time to write, "I don't care anymore," is mean and contributes nothing.

The comment did nothing but harm though. The other commenter is only saying just don't comment then.

[–] bagelberger@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

If that's true then the gun lobbyists have won
