"Thing that everyone said was going to happen happens, but now it's happened to one of our betters so it's news."

Haven't kids been killing themselves over deepfake porn being passed around school for years?

[–] slackassassin@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, but you knew about that because it was also news.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world -5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

So what you're saying is release Trump in deep fake porn so he kills himself?

This is adults standing room only, children that self censor themselves because they got TikTok brain need not apply and the exit is posted

[–] dickalan@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Just say the word. Suicide. Self censoring denies it of its purposely impactful meaning

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

collapsed inline media

I'm really trying. But even my image search is filtered (see) and when I type UNALIVE my phone replaces it with UNALIVE.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world -2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Unfortunately I'm going to go commit suicide and won't be able to respond further. How could I respond? I'll be dead after all.

Oh shit did I say suicide, I must have been fucking around this whole time. Yes I think the word is dumb too. Now I'll go back and edit the original to make this chain confusing.

So is walled garden censorship, if you'd like to be a good little slave censoring the internet for your big tech overlords — stay on those platforms.

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world -1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

But I have no where else to go when I'm taking a shit or bored at work. Won't you forgive me, so I can stay? 😭

I'm sorry, please don't make me join the other social medias.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

You are now tagged as Big Tech Slave

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Gotta say I walked right into that one.

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Meat and cheese, what a pair

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

South Park didnt go far enough

[–] DirkMcCallahan@lemmy.world 35 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

We've been warning about this for years. Now it's too late, especially because the people in power have a vested interest in NOT policing deepfakes.

[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 18 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (4 children)

I think this is similar to the gerrymandering issue where, since only the Republicans have abused it for years, they have had 0 reason to vote for any legislation put up against it.

Now that the D's are doing it, they might consider the risk is higher than the reward with Gerrymandering and say nobody is allowed to do it.

Just gotta start pumpin out gen images of Rs for them to reconsider their stance.

To be clear, I am very against AI gen images. But, like you were saying, I don't see any reason for them to take any action against it until it affects them.

[–] DirkMcCallahan@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Excellent comparison! I just fear that the GOP will always be more unscrupulous than the Dems, and so will ultimately always be OK with gerrymandering (or deep fakes, or what have you).

[–] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The good (horrible) thing about deepfakes is that pretty much anyone can produce them.

Disclaimer: I am also vehemently against AI-generated garbage, but it is a curious double-standard that the conservatives embrace, which could be easily leveraged against them by many, many pissed off people 🤔

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Two sides to every coin. They know very well that once everyone accepts that deepfakes exist, and that nearly anyone can make them, and they are difficult if not impossible to identify, then the age of photographic and video evidence is over. They want deepfakes out there because it means that if they get caught on camera or on a hot mic, they can immediately turn around and claim that it was a deepfake. Their base will believe it. It will be virtually impossible to get republican voters to hold them accountable then.

Edit to add: The GOP base, being what they are, will gleefully believe deepfakes about democrats while completely dismissing those about republicans. It really is a win-win for them.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The problem with this theory is that Republicans regularly say truly awful shit and it never sinks their career because their voters are horrible people themselves.

[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

Their voter base is not the most educated, so they are VERY susceptible to misinformation. Also, they have raised their base to be extremely reactionary.

It is not really the politicians these would be aimed at, even though some have very fragile egos and may act solely because it hurts their feefees.

[–] Cenzorrll@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

They'll have to be very careful how they legislate gerrymandering. R's can't win in fair elections.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Just make a bunch of deep fake pedophile shit, there's enough links there that an investigation could happen and given they're republican politicians you're pretty likely to find actual pedophilia in doing so.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

interest in NOT policing deepfakes

Neither do I. Check sources like they taught you forever in school. Demanding supervision by adult protection services is for bitches.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I don’t see how current laws can’t handle this. Publishing a deepfake is basically libel. It’s the same as if you published an editorial under someone else’s name.

[–] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It's kind of upsetting that anyone is shocked or surprised by this.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

What would shock or surprise me is if in light of this “travesty”, any meaningful legislation gets drafted and passed.

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 14 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

It's a real worry. I watched a Rachel Maddow video on youtube recently and got several minutes in before I realised it was fake, it was very convincing. How is society going to function when none of us know what's real and what's not?

[–] Archer@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s not exactly functional right now either

[–] TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone 5 points 3 weeks ago

Which is even scarier. Most of us knew it was only going to get worse, and deep fakes are just going to add fuel to the dumpster fire.

[–] Tryenjer@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

That's the thing, it doesn't.

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 14 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Okay, I'm gonna be the one to say it: things like this wouldn't be believable in good faith if people weren't so used to being fucked over by their politicians all the time.

Exactly. The fact that people didn’t even doubt it was real is a big problem, because it speaks of an extremely deep distrust of politicians. People saw it and just immediately went “yeah that’s par for the course.”

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

I mean, fuck. Watching that sultry little temptress squeeze into a Canadian tuxedo three sizes too small with her bouncy little funbags on the screen staring at you, piercing through the core of your soul with those ocean-blue eyes that could resurrect the Führer from his grave in Argentina, is something that should alarm every American citizen because in America, beauty is not defined by whiteness.
