sybau ------> shut your b*tch ass up

It is tiktok trend so to speak, like younger genz older gen alpha, same as "this shit" or "this" being abbreviated as Ts

Back in my day, we just said sophisticated things like stfu and kys and fu and git gut and get pnwed noob and ez pez. But of course these young people have to make up weird abbreviations.

I only knew the first but could extrapolate to the second. The third stumped me, so I looked it up x.x

I feel like when we were stuck on T9 there was an excuse for this.

There used to be a reason to do that. We did it because there were limits to text length and you didn't want to get charged for multiple texts. Also writing on keypads was a pain. I don't understand why anyone still does it today, especially people who were not texting back in those days.

It’s gotten far, far worse. There’s always been an online lingo like this from way back in chat groups or apps like AIM or IRC, but texting shorthand when we had phone keypads and limited texting was way more legible. We shortened the word count more than the letter count and autocomplete wasn’t a thing. Now the shorthand is completely unnecessary and has become more of a stylistic choice than a necessity. I don’t mind it, but when coupled with generational slang it can become indecipherable.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is absolutely not the reason, because even back then when we started doing it, we did it on ICQ, MSN, etc. those chats didn't have length restrictions, and typing was easy on a keyboard.

[–] lunarul@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It wasn't a whole sentence entirely composed of shortened words. It was just some frequent words and expressions that were shortened. The reason there was a combination of writing speed and internet jargon.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

That entirely depended on how 1337 you were 😬

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago

Leave her alone.

I didn't get the rest but take solace in knowing how her story ends.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Are we pluralizing "slang" wrong for a reason?

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah, it should be slangopodes.

[–] Keyboard@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago
