President Donald Trump on Friday fired the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner, hours after the agency reported that job growth in the U.S. had slowed to a near-halt.

In a Truth Social post that also directed even more fire at Fed Chair Jerome Powell, Trump accused BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer of being a political appointee who was manipulating jobs data.

“I was just informed that our Country’s “Jobs Numbers” are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s [Harris’] chances of Victory,” Trump wrote.

“We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified,” he added.

Next week: there were 134 million new jobs

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 46 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (5 children)

134 BILLION NEW JOBS!!!

FTFY

I mean, it's Trump. Do you really think he'd use a number that could be even remotely realistic? It has to be something truly stupid

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fair, he did say he'd bring down the cost of drugs by 1000%. Chronic illnesses about to make BANK.

[–] Pronell@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Woo-cough-hoo!

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was thinking about a number greater than the population of the US, but decided on a number that was equally impossible yet somehow believable by maga.

[–] AbidanYre@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Doesn't matter. If he says it, they'll believe it.

Well they saved "258 million" people from fentanyl overdose in 100 days; finding half of them jobs in a week should be no problem.

Let me know when y’all want to march on Washington and physically remove these asshats from power. I can fit 4 other people in my truck.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 49 points 1 day ago (4 children)

The thing is, we don't need you to march on Washington. We need you to march against your neighbor who's so full of OAN that they still support the asshat in chief.

We can do both. Why not both?

[–] killea@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's just it though. These folks seem IMPOSSIBLE to get through to. Though admittedly my experience may draw from some of the lead-alzheimer's cadre of boomers. I mean they spent fuckin decades making sure they had a poorly educated group that would VOTE, with the added bonus that so many of them were surreptitiously ending up brain damaged as well.

I really wish I knew how to help these people. I've been compassionate, patient, understanding; and I've also brow beat the shit out of em, gotten in screaming matches (not too often, but they tend to respect a level of violence). And it tends to have little effect. It's the part of this that vexes and hurts me the most, and why I can't help but feel this will only be rectified with chilling violence that none of us want and are ill-suited to execute. Ugh.

Their belief in MAGA is filling some deep psychological need. Logical reasoning around the belief is irrelevant because logic can't activate whatever social buttons are being satisfied by their engagement with the MAGA movement.

Research trying to figure out what makes humans susceptible to this kind of stuff and how to protect each other was a hot topic, but then Congressional Republicans launched harassing investigations into everyone in the field and the institutions that supported their work, and of course the current executive branch has entrenched that fear. Gotta keep the victims coming to the grifter trough.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

So far we've been screaming that the meteors are coming. They haven't really hit yet. When they start landing next to them and on them, then most of them will start to believe it.

But one, how close the meteor needs to hit varies. And two, a few won't even get it when their wife gets deported.

No! Ant poison works because the workers take the poison to the queen. The same cannot be said for this circumstance.

He wants people who will lie for him, like bondi, bongino, kash, hegseth, tulsi, etc.

He wants people who will lie, break the law, or support/hide/ignore illegal activities. He's a fucking mobster. Organized crime is at the executive branch. Arguably the judiciary and Senate as well.

Watching fascism play out in real time... What a time to be alive.

[–] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (8 children)

So when this is all over. These enablers will go to jail right?

[–] humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Depends on timing. We’re in a small window between them showing their intent, and a first-for-humanity inability to organize against them. Once ORNL gets their nuke-powered AI up and running, and fed all the Palantir data and the decades of mass surveillance data the NSA has but hasn’t been able to use at scale, the regime will be able to have a constantly-updated list of the people most likely to instigate an uprising, and can just MLK them or blackmail them before their movement gets off the ground. All that will remain are easily-dealt-with and easily-discredited lone wolves.

That's how Putin got stuck in year 4 of the 3 day special military operations. Everybody lied to him about the state of his military forces. It's inevitable with these "strong man" leader types.

Ever hear the expression, "Hitler made the trains run on time“?

Thing is, he didn't. But everyone was afraid to report that they weren't running on time, so officially they always met their schedules.

That's where this is heading.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 40 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It was actually Mussolini who failed to make the trains run on time. I mean, I haven't heard of them being especially punctual under Hitler, either, but the phase is about Mussolini.

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago

Hitler's more known for a different kind of train.

The administration equivalent of putting a piece of tape on your dash to cover a blinking check engine light.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 12 points 1 day ago

Thanks for including blinking, as this means severe engine damage, not a pesky code to clear. And it's exactly what's going on here.

[–] Regna@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

This is so surreal, such a parody.

[–] pfc_hudson@lemmy.world 56 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Makes sense - if you don't like the numbers just fire the messenger.

Since the first messenger who told Tigranes that Lucullus was coming had his head cut off for his pains, no one else would tell him anything, and so he sat in ignorance while the fires of war were blazing around him, giving ear only to those who flattered him.

Plutarch, ~ 100 A.D.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 14 points 1 day ago

History rhymes.

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 52 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We're fucked. It's all over but the fighting.

Until a few months ago, I was a statistician for the US government. 25 years. I'm so fucking glad I'm out, though I'm making far less than I used to, honestly not enough yet. But I'm glad I'm not under his thumb.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I cut my salary in half to get out. Wtf is money worth if you can't even afford anything?

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 37 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Any second now they'll announce the new government branch: the Ministry of Truth.

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

They'd be fine with ministry of alternative facts

The idea is to make sure others don't release damaging data, and that they fudge the numbers or lose their job. It's a warning as much as revenge.

This is satire right? Jesus H. Christ. We are so far into clown world that you couldn't even make fun of it. No matter how ridiculous you make it sound- they will outdo you with reality.

How is this any different from admitting that whoever Trump replaces them with is going to report inaccurate numbers to make Trump look good?

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 9 points 10 hours ago

In the era of global fascism, satire is dead. These aren't bad ideas when you don't care about anything passed your self image, and no one that matters will stand up to you.

[–] 9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dude shot the messenger instead of facing the issue at hand.

[–] OneWomanCreamTeam@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He wants to replace them with someone who will fudge numbers to whatever is useful for Trump.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 day ago

For a good 25 years now, the Republican party has treated reality as a messaging problem, not something to grapple with and use in planning. The only surprise is that it took this long to fire people in the federal government who didn't give the "right" message.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (9 children)

How do I short the entire US economy?

Normally I’d say this is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve heard, but I don’t even know if it makes the top 10 this week.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Conservative media was working overtime to spin those jobs numbers as positive😂😂

[–] rhvg@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

China has been providing false numbers, so here is a move to leveling the playing field by making USA numbers untrustworthy as well. One step closer to beat China.
