I have this problem when people use abreviations for game names. There are so many games that it's impossible for me to understand. And good luck to find out which game it is if it's a new one you never heard of...

Man I love CP, if only it didn't take up so much space on my hard drive.
Acronyms are a pet peeve of mine. Basically useless and now you need tribal knowledge to understand what the hell someone is talking about.
That's true, but it's also true that within a small community sometimes acronyms are necessary. Like, imagine NASA:
"Jones exited the AL in his AES but the C4ISP flagged an error either in the LSPG or WFCA."
vs.
"Jones exited the air lock in his Anthropometric Extra Vehicular Activity Suit but the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Systems Protection system flagged an error in the Life Support Power Generation System or Water Flow Control Assembly"
Insiders can use the acronyms to be much more efficient. Outsiders probably wouldn't even understand what they're talking about even if they did spell things out fully.
The only problem is when acronyms leak and what's a well known and clear acronym in one group becomes a confusing one to another group, or worse is confused for a different acronym from a different group.
If the intended reader is a regular person just use normal words, even if it's not 100 % accurate.
Jones exited the air lock in his space suit but the control system flagged an error with life support or water flow
All three ways don't mean much to me as an outsider, but the last one at least paints a somewhat understandable picture.
God of War vs Gears of War are my least favorite but there are others like when it’s solo, ie D2.
And they’re usually such worthless abbreviations and acronyms that save next to no time. Unless you’ve already defined your acronym or someone mentioned it immediately before you, you’re just confusing a smattering of people.
The CEO at my old company really likes the expression "Let's fucking go" for some reason. Lots of "LFG" in the work chat. I guess he eats a lot of LinkedIn slop or something.
But to me, "LFG" means looking for group. I'm sitting here like why is the CEO spamming for group content during the work day, and he's not even saying what role he's playing.
Yes. It's bare minimum to name our specialization and what we still need with each request.
Let's see if I still have my keyboard macro:
"I'm a shitty under-geared DPS and I am LFG with tank, healer, and decent DPS"
Yep. My keyboard macro still works.
Edit: Self own aside, this approach did get me invited to the right groups.
Lol, my running group uses "CD" for cool-down. I'm always confused as to why and how they are cross-dressing for 2 kilometers.
Headline:
BLM riots in Manhattan
Me:
Well that's pretty out of character for the Bureau of Land Management...
Nowadays it's more like the behavior appropriate to the situation.
People be like LFG and I'm like Looking For Group in which game?
Wait, what else would it mean??
Let's fucking go.
Edit: for that matter, "LFG, LFG!" is a grammatically correct acronym sentence.
Oh no... Whelp that's that. I'm officially old.
Leopards Fuck Gently
laughing facing genitalia
Game Master?
Thats where my head went too. Does it mean something else?
Gotta be good morning. Seems like a pretty unnecessary abbreviation to me
For those people you want to know that you care enough about them to wish a good morning, but not enough to type out the full words
im urbandictionarying stuff all the time, that's how i know it means "group masturbation"
I write my texts like I'm writing a cover letter or a wedding invitation to flex on the less erudite and meticulous.
I don't know how many times I had to look up "SMH" before I got it.
Then people started using "SMDH", and I could start all over again, because you can't figure simple damn things out after a certain age.
Those are simple. SMH: System Managed Heraldry, SMDH: Shaving my dog here!
My partner thought “SMH” meant “so much hate”, and “SMDH” meant “so much damn hate”. It worked perfectly in every situation they heard it in. I taught them the real meaning when I realized this about a half decade into dating.
I was really hoping that reading all the comments would inform me about what GM means here
given the context, i suspect it just means 'good morning'
The fact that someone would shorten 'good morning' to 'GM' and go through the trouble to put it in all caps bothers me
"LFG"
Dude, we're already in a group...
My latest one was rq.
I thought it was a typo.
It stands for 'real quick'.
Idk, I mean can't you just pick it up from context?
Lmk if you genuinely can't.
It's ridiculous how lazy people are today - especially that with autocorrect, it's often harder to type the shortened version of something than to let it complete the thing for you.
Voice transcription has gotten good enough, and my thumb has carpal tunnel bad enough, that this shouldn't be a problem anymore.
The other day someone told me they were otp with another person. I'm like, one time password? Google is like, one time password? Finally AI google was like, they mean "on the phone." Sigh I had to do research on this text.
“Please talk to me like I’m your grandmother. I’m tired of asking what you mean.”
Make up your own abbreviations to reply is always fun. Or use out of context abbreviations. My abbreviation loving colleague was so confused when I used a few military terms they didn't know.
