I made a friend I would message with, and he had cancer, he was a middle aged teacher, and we had all these lovely chats. His last message to me was that he was in the palliative ward in a hospital with a fungal infection, and I assume he died after that because I never heard from him again. I miss you my dear friend.
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !askusa@discuss.online
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

Sharing my Homelab hobby, the interactions here are so much nicer
The average Lemmy user seems rather tech savvy. I assumed it would be something to bond over.
That’s a cool hobby :) what motivated you to start a homelab?
I've just started chatting with someone through DMs on the basis of a post about friends. A lot of users on Lemmy seem to be midlife men, so my cohort is definitely here.
Although I've been across posts 3 or 4 times where people ask about friendship, no one follows through. I make a room in any chat app they wasn't to chose and it never gets any joiners. One person asked to be added on Steam, but that's not really conducive to chatting, if just briefly see them o line sometime when they were in the middle of a game.
My favourite interactions..... I just really like that the communities are smaller (than reddit), so it feels like what I contribute counts more and doesnt just get buried. I comment and post a lot more than I used to on reddit.
I’ve always found it better to let online friendships form organically based on shared interests rather than seeking them out. With the second method, there’s a good chance you and the other person won’t have much in common besides wanting to make friends, and the conversation will taper off on its own.
I hope your new chat leads to a strong, lasting friendship :)

tl;dr It started with running Home Assistant for my smart home.
Eventually it became running my own servers to replace google & Microsoft etc.
I got to play some Baldur's Gate 3 with Stamets and a few other Lemmings, that was cool! I'd still be doing it if my schedule allowed.
And we miss you buddy <3
I miss you guys too ❤️
Don't worry, you're always in our closet should you wish to return, my friend <3

What's your favorite subtype of french fry? Steak? Crinkle cut? Sweet potato?
Chips (or as Americans call them, steak fries). we call thin cut chips fries but you can't beat proper chippy chips you get from a chippy like these ones
I do have a relationship, yes. But its more like a one-way relationship.
Hello to the FBI agent monitoring me 👋, will ya fuck off?
You make friends here?
Favourite interactions...umm my memory is weak so I don't remember anything that is striking. But yeah interactions have been nicer.
Oh this is going to sound like my mind is in the gutter, but there have been a couple of NSFW collaborations between smut posters who met on the NSFW then made some posts together. I find that just delightful.
NSFW smut is always a good time!
I get to shake my fist at the clouds when the need arises.
