Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

MODERATORS

I think progressives never thought about this because we banked on immigration and demographic change allowing us to win culturally and electorally but the issue is immigrants tend to be overwhelmingly male, that is how Trump won actually he won over a lot of Hispanic,Black,Asian and indigenous men who feel humiliated by a new culture, economy and world.

So what can we do rhetorically and policy wise to win more young men over ?

Maybe like, one day you are gonna need the social safety net, even if you're a very strong cis het guy.

One you're gonna be old. One day you're gonna be fired without notice when your car breaks down. One day your girlfriend might have a surprise pregnancy you can't deal with.

Just brainstorming but I would start with saying, sure this doesn't benefit you right now, cause you got the luck of the draw, but one day we will all need help

Pride in intellectual achievement would be a good start.

The first thing is that progressives need to stop being intellectually dishonest. The movement needs to admit that the world view is a technocratic one in which the best course of action given the evidence available is the one that will guide the decisions of the movement, not popular sentiment.

As of right now the progressive agenda looks like a mass of contradictions whose only identity is opposition to MAGA and the right with such intensity that the right has in fact co-opted many of the stances that traditionally belonged on the left, losing the support of the working class.

Seen through a Marxist lens, it is not surprising, the progressive movement in the US is not a worker’s movement but rather a managerial class movement.

Better marketing.

Drop policies that have been consistent long-term losers like expanded gun control.

Force through policies that improve their lives at the cost of others, for example, healthcare paid for by taxing billionaires

Drop policies that have been consistent long-term losers like expanded gun control.

Suppressors are a hearing safety device/noise pollution reducer and Democrat politicians describe them like they get all their information from a John Wick movie. It would be so easy for the party to drop the matter entirely and throw politically-homeless gun owners a bone by taking suppressors off the NFA.

Force through policies that improve their lives at the cost of others, for example, healthcare paid for by taxing billionaires

Yep! Follow that up with policies that improve people's lives and we have a ticket that writes itself.

Punching nazis can be nice and masculine if you like.

"Real men take care of their neighbors and vulnerable people, not just themselves and their family"? Honestly I have no fucking idea lol. Not sure that sounds catchy enough though in comparison to the incel bullshit that youtube clowns are feeding young boys these days.

Help them to break down. Encourage them to be soft and show them that that softness is strength. So many of these young men are like this because they feel alone. We need to bring them together in positive ways.

Christ - some of these replies are exactly what a lot of women talk about when we say that Lemmy has a misogyny problem.

Blokes really don't recognize how much harder shit actually is for women, overall. It would be lovely to just sit on a bench for 5 mins without a stranger coming to chat me up, or if people would stop crediting men for my work when they don't even ask for it.

"How do we get young men into progressive politics?"

I know! I know! Make every conversation including this one about women!

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I apologize in advance if I missed some very bad0 comments by not going into the deeply down voted comments.

But at least some of the concerns are about the young men being declared the "villains" and the other side declaring them to be the victims of injustice and they will gravitate toward the more workable message.

Like bystanders seeing the people making life hard for women and being jerks, but not themselves participating and the commentary is less "that guy is a dick" and more "why are all men so terrible?"

Sure a lot of guys are terrible, but the generalizations can make it feel like you can't win.

You need to make it fun and engaging for them. That is what the far right is doining. You and I might find it reprehensible, but they het som much traction bu having fun and giving young men a purpose and the feeling that they are doing something to netter themselves and their commuity.

How you go about that I dont know. In my local area we are focusing on having fun partiets and going out together as a group instead of just being political nerds in our own little grottos. Som far it seems to be working.

Tl;dr: Have fun visibly and invite them to join you. It takes forever, but at least you have fun while doing it.

The elimination of ghost jobs, for a start. If you have to jump through hoops for a job that doesn't exist, that instills a strong distrust in society. People need money to make headway in their life, and shit like ghost jobs corrode the feeling of hope.

Once you cannot feel love for living anymore, that is a great deal of space in one's heart to be filled with hatred.
