Why would I ram a car without a baby inside?

[–] b_tr3e@feddit.org 23 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Pets (50 points), disabled driver (75 points), ambulance (100 points), grandparents on the back seats (100 points)?

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 days ago

Don't forget the bonus multiplier, which is how many cars you can get to pile up

I’ve never understood why people think those signs are so you won’t hit them. They are for first responders to know to look for a kid in a wreck. But people don’t take them off when the kid isn’t in the car so they are mostly ignored.

[–] toxoplasma0gondii@feddit.org 18 points 4 days ago

I understand these as. "Expect unexpected shit from me at all times."

They might be extremly sleep deprived and are forced to drive somewhere regardless (baby sick or something) or might be wrestling with a toddler and a bottle of mistery Liquid he just found somewhere on the backseat. Might also get projectile vomited at right at the moment. Both not ideal driving conditions but sometimes you gotta do shit and be somewhere, even if you really should not drive there yourself.

I take these as a fair warning to be extra alert around these vehicles. Source: have a toddler myself.

I always assumed they were just another way for people to broadcast mundane factoids about themselves to total strangers that don't care. Like an early form of social media, if you will.

[–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Yes. It was early social media.

I always kept a Garfield plushy in my car window, to let people know how I felt about Mondays.

We were pretty desperate back then.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

People used to post their phone number in newspaper personals so they could talk to someone. Now they're probably live streaming on twitch

I've always assumed it's because people with babies tend to pull away slower, take corners at lower speed and brake early and less heavy.

But I've also seen people drive like an absolute maniac with a baby in the car, so who knows?

[–] washbasin@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You'd think the car seat might be a literal bigger indicator.

[–] Uruanna@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Not if you get to the scene from the back of the car, where the sticker is and from where you can't see the seat.

[–] atomicorange@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I keep a “baby on board” sticker on my car so people will assume I’m an exhausted parent and be less likely to pull a gun on me in traffic if I do something to annoy them.

"No baby on board, but we adults don't wanna die either"

Actually give me a bumper sticker that says:

"If you hit my car, I'll cum"

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

“If you hit my car, I’ll cum”

You must really enjoy talking to the insurance company

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Those baby on board stickers were so helpful, you'd see one and think okay, I'll be extra careful not to crash into that particular car.

[–] ieatpwns@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Same with the brand new bmws and Porsche cayennes with “new driver” stickers.

[–] atomicorange@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

A 17 year old kid in a brand new Subaru WRX totalled my car by ramming it from behind at ~90mph. Buying a car like that for a child should be a crime, it’s like giving a kid a loaded gun.

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Like 10 years ago and suburban with one of thos was doing 35 in a 55 so I tried to pass him. Dude speeds up and proceeded to brake check me yelling out tge window that he has an effing kid in the car, like what? so i get beside him flip him off and go on my way. Dude followed me and called the cops on me like im at fault, long story short he got in trouble

[–] spazzman6156@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

That poor kid

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I know a couple who have had eight kids in eleven years. Their youngest is two months old. There's ALWAYS a baby on board. I wouldn't be surprised if she's already pregnant again.

They don't have anything advertising the baby on their car though.

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I mean, if they lose a couple would they even notice at this point?

Home alone vibe here.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Those poor neglected kids :(

[–] ober9000@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And somehow many people with those stickers drive like the biggest cunts. Like having a kid excuses failing to yield or slamming on the brakes then turning without a signal.

[–] kofe@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Would make sense since new parents lacking sleep struggle a bit

[–] ober9000@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah I suppose that makes sense.

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Orr they could be having babies consecutively. know someone who has 6 kids one after another

In Korea, people put "초보운정" stickers on their cars. "Beginner Driver". They've been doing it for decades, so you see some pretty old ones. How long does one remain a beginner exactly?

There's also 차사순, who is literally famous for failing her written driver's test 950 times before passing.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 4 points 3 days ago

Legend. She needs a 차사순 sticker so people know to stay at least 4 car lengths away.

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

In Europe many countries have a mandatory sticker/magnet with a red "A" on white background to signal new drivers. You take it off after 2 years.

Good choice. The Scarlet Letter!

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

She even failed at being incompetent I guess.

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The point of those stickers isn't to ask for kindness. It's to let you know shit can happen on board and you may start driving like an idiot. Better stay a bit back so you have time to react.

[–] LemmyThinkAboutIt@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If I remember correctly, the actual point of the signs in car windows is to alert emergency services to a child being in the vehicle in case the vehicle is in an accident. I could be incorrect however, it was just an explanation I heard decades ago at this point.

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No, you're right. It is so emergency services prioritise cars with the sign.

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

That's why you must remember to always leave a baby in the car. It's the law.

[–] sunbytes@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

And also that honking/screaming at the car is (even more of) a dick move now.

[–] cyrano@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago
[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Something something Burt Ward.

[–] RizzoTheSmall@lemm.ee 2 points 3 days ago

I think of it more of a "give me extra space because I may be distracted and exhausted" warning sign.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

What if they had another baby the following year and just never updated the sticker?

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

or the kid is already dead

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Due to target fixation, I bet they were already hit more often.
