Just your friendly reminder that over half of the country blamed the students for the Kent State massacre.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 45 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What percentage of people today do you think even know what the Kent state massacre was?

People seem so fucking incurious it's aggravating.

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (4 children)

This is the first time iv ever heard of this

[–] PacMan@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The first “Super Group” Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; released a song named Ohio that got big time air play at the time and still does today, regarding the Kent shooting.

https://youtu.be/l1PrUU2S_iw

It was wild being from that area and talking to people who protested that day and hearing their stories

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah I grew up a couple states over and my Dad was protesting at a similar sized college back then.

He got tear gassed and beat up too, and he always said if I was in a protest to bring a video camera and pretend to be Press.

But now that they’re shooting obvious journalists, I don’t think that would work.

TL;dr: Students from Kent State were protesting against Nixon expanding the Vietnam war into Cambodia, other people from Kent got involved and somewhat violent in town, resulting in national guard deployment. may 4th, students gathered for a scheduled peaceful protest, army showed up to disperse them and they chased each other until the army, with no warning, turned and fired on the protestors.

[–] phlegmy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Hat_Riot.
And then a few days later, hundreds of students and teachers protested this event in NYC.
Thousands of workers in the area then attacked the protestors and rioted throughout the city in retaliation.
The police formed a barrier to prevent the workers from reaching the students, but when this was breached, they gave up and allowed the rioters to attack the students/teachers.

The mayor called out the police for not attempting to stop the violent workers, and three days later the workers began their own protests against the 'commie' mayor.

The president later appointed the main guy leading these counter protests as his labor secretary.

Just typical american shit.

[–] whostosay@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Ah that's why we celebrate star wars day

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

To clarify, it's not one's fault for not knowing something. None of us know everything. What's aggravating is the lack of curiosity.

The Neil Young song "Ohio" (well, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) is about the event... Great song check it out.

You Americans need to stop blaming yourselves for what your "leaders" do. Your nation has always been a false democracy with false freedoms. Everyone else around the world knows America is full of shit when it talks about such things. And they don't get to vote on what foreign policy America will adopt. What you're experiencing now is that foreign policy turned domestic.

[–] TheLiveFive@lemm.ee 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This is so true, it's exactly how the American regime has been conducting itself around the world for decades. They have just now turned it on us. I think it's because people started talking about Bernie and socialized medicine and universal healthcare and it looked like we might actually do something about it for a second there.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago

You Americans need to stop blaming yourselves for what your “leaders” do.

Easier said than done when so many regular people cheer this shit on.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Ok but also about 1 in 4 people here know what is happening and actively want it.

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But Donald Trump, known Conman and 34 time Convicted Felon who Lied during his First Term, TOLD ME he DIDNT know what Project 2025 WAS!

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 15 points 2 days ago

He still doesn't. This is Steve Miller's show. Trump is nothing but a spokesman.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 29 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Americans sure enjoyed sitting on their hands during the 2024 presidential election when they could’ve prevented all of this…

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 33 points 2 days ago

Half of them are brainwashed. Its crazy how propaganda works. Then you ask one of them if they've ever even met a trans person, and they haven't. Even though by their estimates 50% of the US is Trans xD . Idiots.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Many of us voted against this. And many more were purged from the voting rolls when it was too late to re-register.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It’s more so because not enough people didn’t do their part to oppose fascism at the ballot.

Republicans didn’t have that much control over the state and local election rules at the time.

So no you don’t get to hand weave personal-responsibility away from those who did nothing that day.

Tankies and Anarchists need to be called out for encouraging this self-destructive behaviour.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago

You but see here. The other option was a black female. That's a difficult choice for them.

[–] ThatsTheSpirit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

I really hate this type of rhetoric, not dissimilar to the cringe af "vote blue no matter who". It really ignores the decades long malicious attack on american consciousness itself, on truth and history. The American people are disenfranchised from political thought and economic action by design. Im not sure how much voting in america even matters at this point, the dnc capitulated HARD to fascists during the election, as is their historical prerogative (to defend capital interest), blaming the citizens just seems meaningless at this point. At a certain point you have to admit this is just what liberal democracy degenerates to every time.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago (6 children)

Maybe think about implementing proportional representation if you hate 2 big parties so much. Kamala Harris is leagues of Donald Trump and you’re trolling if you think they’re the same…

Both sides are le same. I am very smart

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Republicans inspire hate and lead people to ignorance. Democrats inspire nobody and lead them nowhere. Then Democrats whine that they can't win because people are ignorant and hateful.

Americans have been sitting on their hands for way longer than that.

Not really. page 555 just take about deploying troops at the border.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 41 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Everything within 100 miles of the border or a coast is technically 'at the border' for the purposes of enforcement. That covers pretty much 90% of the US population.

[–] Sc00ter@lemm.ee 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Which, for people doing that math at home, includes LA

[–] entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 2 days ago

Correct. LA borders the ocean

[–] nutcase2690@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 2 days ago

I think within their definition, entry points to the country are the "border" as well. Meaninig all international airports.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

This could include use of active-duty military personnel and National Guardsmen to assist in arrest operations

I'd say that's pretty spot on for what's happening.

[–] DogWater@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Hi, have you seen where LA is on a map by chance?

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

"But a meme page on Facebook told me Project 2025 was just written to trigger the libs!"

(Yes, I knew people like that)

[–] VasovagalSyncope@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"But remember to peacefully keep letting them do whatever they want or they will be REALLY bad guys!"

This country is fucked

And Neoliberals are at least half to blame

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

"At least half" implies they could have over 50% culpability for the fascist government. How can the fascists doing the things have a minority of blame for their own actions?

You can blame them for the country being shit but it's been functionally shit for decades. Fascists are the ones who properly fucked it.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Open book test? .... lol .... America just looked at the pretty pictures and voted for the guy with the easiest sounding name.

[–] piccolo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Idk... Harris is much easier to say, and doesnt rhyme with rump, dump, or chump

Yeah but what did you think Americans were actually gonna vote for a black woman? They were gonna come up with every excuse not to. Trump, Putin and Netanyahu played the American left like a fiddle.

[–] PixelatedSaturn@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Even though most Americans don't know or don't care about any of this, the other side would have still won if they just asked the voters who they want.

But that wasn't an option, by design. Because the other side would rather lose than win with someone they can't control. And any other option is unavailable, by design.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

People forgot the age-old rule, never skip page 555. Actually most Americans didn't read any of Project 2025, and MAGAs didn't read any criticisms of it. Can't be bothered when you got memes to look at and scrollin' to do!

The better of us tried!

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Shouldn't Trump be arrested according to page 553?

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not even in page 666?

They must an opportunity right there
