MODERATORS

Tense confrontations between police and demonstrators in L.A. continued for a second day on Saturday, in response to operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents

Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, said he plans to send the National Guard to Los Angeles to combat protests against ICE that began this weekend following immigration raids in the city.

“We are making Los Angeles safer. Mayor Bass should be thanking us. She says they are going to mobilize—guess what? We are already mobilizing. We are going to bring the National Guard in tonight,” Homan told Fox News.

His comments come after Senior White House adviser Stephen Miller railed against the protests, calling them an “insurrection” against the United States.

"rioters and looters"

These are just protests and there have been no reports of looting.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 37 points 5 days ago

The same voices keep saying that Jan 6 was a peaceful protest that was misunderstood.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

I watched most of it on TikTok live since Friday. It began with a hit and run of a protestor by ICE.

I definitely didn’t see looters, but protestors were throwing rocks, cinder blocks, and M80s, and lighting cars on fire. That prompted ICE to don riot gear and deploy tear gas.

This is a bad idea. We don’t have the numbers to get baited into escalation. This will only embolden fascism.

Edit: Please share this.

We don’t have the numbers to get baited into escalation.

Huh? You absolutely do. And remember that this started because ICE was rounding up people off the street, so "not getting baited into escalation" would require allowing that to happen, which goes against the kind of solidarity necessary to depose Trump's regime.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Our largest protest was 5M people nationwide. That’s smaller than the percent of communists that Hitler incarcerated in his first wave of detentions.

We are smarter than Trump. Let’s fucking act like it.

[–] ShoeThrower@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, we need more peaceful protesters to be attacked by cops and counter-protesters, then get blamed for the violence.

Or maybe the fascists will eventually just decide to stop, all on their own...

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Or we could act on emotion and lose a portion of our resistance to a clear trap set by the dumbest president we’ve ever had.

[–] MontySaurus@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Bro is already licking the fascist boots as it's just getting started.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world -3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

How about you read a book about Nazi Germany and then we can talk? Fighting fascism with less than 2% of the population is how you get your resistance incarcerated.

We need more people. We lose people with violence.

[–] MontySaurus@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's okay lil bro, just give up. You clearly aren't cut out for anything.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world -3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I’m clearly more educated than you. It’s emotional reactionaries such as yourself that give the fascists justification to legally suspend our rights. Maybe spend less time at the gym and go find a library.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

No you're right, the best way to deal with fascists is clearly to bend over backwards and give them what they want. Just give Poland to Hitler, it'll make him happy /s

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I’m saying violent resistance is the reason we’re about to lose rights and people to incarceration. Protestors will be too afraid to protest for their safety. I’m saying violence is not productive. Why is that hard to comprehend?

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Because you're losing those rights regardless of whether or not you fight. You can't placate fascists. If you give them an inch they will take the whole mile, so may as well fight for the whole mile.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So why not just give in by losing our resistance? Your logic is horribly flawed.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

So it's better to have no resistance than to let the fascists know we don't love them.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Who said that? I’m advocating for peaceful resistance. We need more numbers. Violence only reduces them.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Who said that? I’m advocating for peaceful resistance.

So nonresistance.

We need more numbers.

And this will be the excuse for doing nothing until we're all in camps.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You need to stop using German history as a reference if you aren’t actually familiar with it.

The communists set the Reichstag fire in 1933. That emboldened Hitler to attack them as a class and deport them to Poland. There was a larger percentage of communists in Germany than our largest peaceful protest. You’re literally suggesting walking head first into repeating history.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I didn't mention Germany.

So, how do you intend to increase the numbers of people willing to oppose fascism before we're all in camps?

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 66 points 5 days ago (3 children)

My feeling is that if the people of CA don’t fight back with equal, brutal force, America is officially done and this will happen everywhere.

I’m not sure what else one can do.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 29 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

First video we see of a drone strike officially makes it a civil war. Either side.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 26 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I have to think that if anyone is going to fight fight, it’s Los Angeles.

Get ready for the fight to come to your town.

[–] Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It feels dirty rooting for LA from the north bay but go LA! Grrrr...

(We have a great sports rivalry in this state for those who need context) ;)

[–] Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com 14 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Media attention benefits the Trump agenda and the point is to set off the powderkeg. There is no deescalation.

To cause a riot is the point; that's why punishment for objecting to agents was fortified as soon as the turd defiled the white house.

Americans will die, but only those who oppose Trump's agenda.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 14 points 5 days ago

There is no deescalation.

Nor can there be deescalation with fascists. Trump is looking for a fight, but fundamentally there can be no way to stop him but a fight. Something something they came for the immigrants, and I ____ (fill in the blank).

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Americans will die, but only those who oppose Trump's agenda.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

[–] Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I guess I should have worded that better. The danger is to the citizens defending our immigrant community from ICE raids.

Americans will die under Trump in other ways too like measles, lack of healthcare, food insecurity, pollution, violence, etc.

[–] Nougat@fedia.io 5 points 5 days ago

That’s not what I was referring to.

Resistance fighters.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 65 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Homan also complained about backlash directed at ICE agents during his interview on Fox News. The border czar, when asked about Democrats who have called for ICE agents to work unmasked, said he was looking into what could be done to stop their criticism.

“We’re asking the DOJ to look at these statements and see if there is something we can do,” Homan said.

We're living in a time where the highest policing authority in the nation is openly trying to subvert first amendment rights by charging elected officials with crimes for speaking out against authoritarianism. Great.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

A masked policing agency isn't anything but a cult motivated mob. They are no better no than the KKK. They are following orders they know the population will not accept. Therefore they have abandoned their oath to protect the populus, and chose to serve only the rich.

Call me terrible, but the best thing we can do is tell them they will all serve life sentences for their actions when Trump leaves office. 100 year sentence for every ICE member that assists or assaults member of our community. If they are in a state that offers the death penalty, they should be able to choose it if they wish.

[–] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

A masked policing agency isn't anything but a cult

Eh, a lot of Mexican and central American police need to be masked some times or the cartels will murder there families, so there are some valid reasons. There hasn't been any cases of ICE agents being targeted outside some possible "attacks" on social media as far as i know so they've got no excuse.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

Honestly, ICE are changing that by being malicious dipshits. Hopefully the good guys won't do 'guilty by association', but I have a feeling that it will be difficult to keep ourselves from descending into madness.

This sucks. 😩

[–] Fingolfinz@lemmy.world 32 points 5 days ago

I recommend getting a firearm and becoming competent with it sooner than later

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"Trumpanmen" square about occur.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

During his first term, Trump asked Mark Esper (then-head of the DoD) to use live ammo on protesters, and he declined to - Source

That role is now filled by former Fox News host, Pete Hegseth.

[–] GiuseppeAndTheYeti@midwest.social 15 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Can people tell me why we keep using the stupid fucking "border czar" term? I want to know who the fuck these people are and what their actual titles are. It makes reading headlines such a fucking chore. I end up having to google the context of a headline like every 4th article.

For those curious, Tom Homan's actual title is White House Executive Associate Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations

[–] KMAMURI@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

We know Himmler's name we should also know Homans.

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 4 days ago

Because the constitution says we can't call the president king, but if we name everyone in other positions "border king" "energy king" etc. in Russian, we can normalize the king concept. Maybe a shitty nod to Russia as well?

Confounding that they are so willing to use a Russian term.

Our government really wants us to be feudal, apparently.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

"czars" are unaccountable and powerful. Thats why these public employees like the term. They should be called administrators or "public servants" because thats what they actually get a paycheck for, not for strutting around playing billy badass against American citizens.

This particular borderbitch public servant should go sit his TSA self at an airport and shut his overfed piehole. Nobody cares what he thinks.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago

I love that ICE is such a bunch of shriveled nutsacks that they have to send in Gary from Accounting to come bail their asses out.

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago

Mayor Bass should be thanking us

I see another "did you even say thank you?" moment coming...

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

They shot and killed college kids at Kent State for less. They maimed people at BLM protests and killed several, too. Those cowardly Conservatives will do anything to shut people up that rock the boat and threaten their power.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Gaining just a teensy tiny bit of faith in Americans, though I'm still flabbergasted that it took this long before non-cybertruck cars started burning.

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

Unfortunately, I don't think we can take credit for most of those.

[–] ABetterTomorrow@lemm.ee 3 points 4 days ago

Going to lose, butt czar.
