Remember, none of this is restricted to actual gang members.

If they can deport anyone who is a member of a Venezuelan gang to a prison camp without trial then, oops, turns out everyone they don't like is a member of a Venezuelan gang.

You can prove you're not? Too bad. That would require a trial. You don't get one of those, because we say you're a member of a Venezuelan gang.

See how this works?

ICE are Trump's sturmabteilung. If he's allowed to get away with any of this, it will not be long before he starts turning them on anyone who openly disagrees with him.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 23 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Garcia was deported to El Salvador with alleged Venezuelan gang members, but he wasnt Venezuelan, so they just declared him MS-13 instead.

Facts dont matter, they'll just create "alternative facts" that fit their narrative.

All they have to do is follow the law. Law says they can call anyone a terrorist or national security threat and that removes people's rights. This has been law for years. Now, Republicans are using it because they know they will not get in trouble.

You don't have to be in a gang. They will say standing outside of a Home Depot is a lawful reason to send you to a South American gulag. Because Republicans will not get in trouble.

Doesn’t the US incorporate castle doctrine principles - an affirmative defense to criminal homicide occurring within a home? Combine that with lax to nonexistent gun control and a high gun ownership rate, and you’re just asking for trouble.

That's if they let you live long enough to make it to trial, nevermind afterward. 😶

I've resisted, all this time, getting a gun because I have a history of depression and I didn't want one in the house

however, given I have the blessing of castle doctrine in my state I'm really starting to think getting one might be the smarter decision. at least I might get to go out on my own terms.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 14 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

You have to weigh the likelihood of a warrantless raid versus another bout of heavy depression.

[–] archonet@lemy.lol 8 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (4 children)

I'm in the middle of a bout of heavy depression right now, I just want to live long enough to outlive my close family, namely my parents. They shouldn't have to sit through my funeral.

Being gay and neurodivergent, though, I don't think I have that long in this country. And I have no method to escape.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 20 hours ago

Suicide ain't it, neighbor. Sincerely. Not even suicide by cop.

If you need to talk, I'm here. Feel free to DM or reply here, I'm around. 🤘🏼

Don't kill yourself that's just giving them what they want. Existence is resistance.

Hey. One of my best friends was gay and had depression. He came from a very religious family and struggled with both of these things his entire life. Then he got sick and didn't seek treatment for a medical issue that was curable but fatal if untreated. He died. I think he chose not to seek treatment because it was an out that he didn't have to affirmatively choose.

The world is a worse place without him. It’s been 3 years and I still think about him almost every day. Please find a better solution.

It varies state by state, and sometimes by municipality.

"According to the memo, agents can break into a home if getting a warrant is “impracticable,” and they don’t need a judge’s approval."

Here in Oregon:

https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_161.219

"a person is not justified in using deadly physical force upon another person unless the person reasonably believes that the other person is:

(1) Committing or attempting to commit a felony involving the use or threatened imminent use of physical force against a person; or

(2) Committing or attempting to commit a burglary in a dwelling; or

(3) Using or about to use unlawful deadly physical force against a person. [1971 c.743 §23]"

Interesting. I’m not an expert on the matter by any means, as I’m not even American, but from what I’ve read, ICE agents often dress in plain civilian clothes - sometimes with no identification markers at all - and can now enter your home without a warrant based merely on “suspicion”. Taking all of this into account, it seems like you would have reasonable belief that you’re in danger and should defend yourself.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago

Yup. If it's my house, it falls under #2, my neighbors house would fall under #1.

It’s almost as if the War on Drugs was being used as a pretense to up state power for years, and now we have police-military kitted out and trained (Cop City) to slaughter protesters in the street.

They WANT trouble, in as many ways as possible. That will allow him to justify imposing Martial Law, and suspend elections.

He has a razor thin majority in Congress, with the 2016 midtetm election ahead (which is shaping up to be a bloodbath), and he can't afford to lose either chamber, which would give Dems control of investigative committees with subpoena and arrest powers.

He wants violence, and he will be instigating it in as many ways as possible.

Remember when we were told that kids had to keep dying so we could be allowed to keep guns in our home in case the government decides to break down our doors one day??? Member that? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

Just wanted to add that since ICE agents are just walking around doing shit without identifying themselves, anyone could walk into your house and rob/rape/murder you while claiming to be ICE if you resist.

Just want to make it clear that this opens up a whole lot of home invasions.

[–] Kookie215@lemmy.world 12 points 16 hours ago

Exactly! have no warrants and don't identify themselves; they don't even have a uniform or badges. I do not care who they say they are, anyone can say they are ICE to get into my home. Do we honestly believe that people are not going to do that? Like be real, this is a flashing beacon of hope to criminals.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 44 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

This is a blatant violation of the 4th amendment, and the cure for it is the 2nd amendment.

Do the Americans really want USA to be a fascist gestapo country?
How exactly do the methods of Trumps regime reflect a society that values freedom?

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 14 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

MAGA's society is one where white people rule and set the laws. Right now, the target is brown people but it won't stay that way for long. East Asians will be the next cause of issues with China.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 10 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

No, white people are no safer than anyone else, they are just lower on the priority list. They'll get to us standard issue white folks eventually.

Only the wealthy will be safe from the government, and that does not include the mere rich. If you think you are safe because you have a net worth of a few million bucks, you are deluding yourself. You are just another poor rube to the truly wealthy, and when all the profit has been wrung out of the poor, working class, and middle class, theyll go after the merely rich.

Absolutely, but it was not only white people who voted Trump in, a lot of Latinos and Hispanics also voted for him, and they are absolutely targets already!

Any local administrator that signs in for this, is guilty of treason. This administration is guilty, conclusively, now of treason. Why isn't it being removed? What's all this about checks and balances? Seems like the people invoking the alien enemies acts have become, themselves alien enemies.

[–] BingBong@sh.itjust.works 11 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

So I really dislike having guns in the home since I have young children. At this point I'm willing to consider it. I don't have a room for a massive gun safe and nor do I know what gun to get for home defense. What resources are out there to help me find a starting point?

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 6 points 10 hours ago

If you are uncertain what type of gun to get for home defense, id strongly recommend taking training courses before considering. They'll help you get comfortable with one that works for you and your use cases.

If you're in a city/state without resources, connect with those websites. You might be able to start your own chapter.

Oh look, another thing that has been shot down in court that will have to be relitigated to tell them they're fucking idiots.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 8 points 22 hours ago

Since when have they listened to courts?

[–] ToadOfHypnosis@lemm.ee 6 points 20 hours ago

If they even listen to the courts. Things aren’t looking good on that front.

Anyone want to build an exploding house?

Im not American but if someone wants this idea id love to read about it some day

[–] SpaceShort@feddit.uk 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Do stand your ground laws still apply?

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 9 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Depends on the state.

There is also Castle Doctrine, which is probably more applicable, and more widespread, accepted in one form or another in all 50 states.
