"Steep learning curve" means quick to learn, not difficult. The curve is learning over time. If the curve is steep there is much learning over short time.
Doesn't mean easy nor hard, just quick.
It means you have to learn a lot very quickly, which is hard.
It might be hard, it might be easy. That the curve is steep just means it takes little time.
Or time is on the x-axis.
Steepness has nothing to do with time.
Say your goal was to climb a 20km mountain
If it was a steep mountain it would be harder than a flat dune mountain.
If you could walk at a max speed of 10km an hour both mountains would take 2 hours to climb.
X-axis: Time Y-axis: Difficulty
Example Yo-yoing.
Doesn't have steep learning curve. You can throw a yo-yo and get it up fairly easy. As you practice the difficulty of things you can do goes up.
It's learning curve would look like
collapsed inline media
Example wake boarding.
Does have a steep learning curve. You more than likely will be dragged under water a couple times and probably fall as soon as you get up the first time to be dragged under water again. But once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature.

Steepness is the difficulty required to move on in time
For real? I kind of always assumed it was like getting from point a to point b on a slight incline and it takes 20 minutes vs a steep incline and if you can keep the same pace, it takes you 5 minutes. But of course steeper is exhausting and harder.
Yeah I think they're overthinking it
Also it is more of a wall, if you fail to learn quickly you are out.
