MAGA devotee Roberto Mosquera thought Trump would unify the country. Now he’s 8,000 miles away.

Gosh, if only there were some indication that Trump was a racist that hated Hispanic people before Mosquera voted for him.

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago (9 children)

You're not wrong, but at the same time, there was a concerted effort to obfuscate the republican game plan in Hispanic communities specifically. Like, they were more directly lied to than basically everyone else in the voter base, with (very obviously, but still) empty promises of protection, benefits, and security.

Many of these people genuinely did not know what they were voting for because many, many steps were taken by swaths of lying dirtbags to ensure that they could not know the truth of these things without suddenly and dramatically pivoting in their beliefs and exiting their comfort zones for reasons they, by design, did not even know they might have need for.

It shouldn't be a surprise to any of us at this point that the propaganda works. We are in the position we are in as a world culture because the propaganda works.

My wife is Hispanic, and most of her family that doesn't speak English, all love Trump. Apparently, when they translate him speaking into Spanish, they paraphrase everything he says, just to make him sound sane. Her aunt and father would both send her videos, where he's rambling about some stupid, crazy shit, and the Spanish translation is completely different than what's coming out of his mouth. It makes him sound normal.

She's had to explain to them so many times, that what they're hearing, is not what he's actually saying...but when she translates it directly for them, they don't always believe her. Why would they? They can't believe anyone would say that, because it's all nonsense.

They really have no idea just how stupid and dangerous he actually is.

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago

This is exactly what I was getting at, and thank you for saying so because many of these responses have me losing faith in people's ability to tangle with nuance.

A town I used to live in received Ted Cruz flyers in both Spanish and English during the last cycle. The ones that were in Spanish just flat out lied about his positions on immigration, and based on what older friends in the area have said, they've been pulling this shit for a long, long time now.

Those translators need to be muted and deafened ya know what shatter their hands irrevocably while your at it. They shouldnt have the ability to lie in such a way.

I'm not from US, but "I hate mexicans, we have to kick them out, and let's build a wall against them" is pretty self-explanatory, no?

[–] Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world 40 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You have to understand how many Cubans hate all other Hispanics. They consider themselves white. The "good ones" if you will.

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not even exclusive to Cubans. Pick any migrant group and the conservative members of that group hate the idea of people who were in identical circumstances to their family when they migrated getting the same chances. Fuck your got mine the entire way down.

Exhibit A: these types of "legitimate" Filipino-Americans who'll just narc anyone fresh off the boat and not having permanent residency.

collapsed inline media

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah exactly, and it's fucked.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 day ago

I’m from the US.

Yes.

There was a lot of talk about 'recent immigrants', while the voting population is older immigrants that got citizenship by going through the process (or people that lived on land that became the US under them), and they also hate illegal immigration because they did it 'the right way' and are the reason police and border patrol keeps hassling them.

Obviously it's the wrong way of thinking about the issue of you correctly identify that it's basically pure racism, but I could see how you could be led there if you're a low information voter (especially if the TV station you watch is owned by a Trump ally).

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

if you're a low information voter

Ignorance, whether it stems from laziness or is willful, is on them, and we are all suffering now as a consequence of their ignorance. Trump showed exactly who he was to anyone paying even an iota of attention before he was voted into office, and I have little empathy for those who now say "we didn't know".

For fucks sake, he bragged about grabbing women by the pussy, and everyone in the country had this piece of information before he was voted into office. What more information does a person need to judge his character? He's a shit person and anyone who voted for him did so because they didn't think the leopards would eat their face, giving zero empathy to all the people harmed by Trump, including those ripped off by his his fake Trump University, fraud foundation, etc., etc., etc., etc. "Low information" is no excuse.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

You're completely correct in all respects. However, we still need to understand it in order to fight it.

Their playbook is not very thick. They keep doing all the same shit, and we haven't adapted. Remember after the Trump impeachments the Republicans were saying "impeach" left and right about everything? They wanted to water down the term and the concept.

They want to say everything the Democrats might say ideally before they say it in order to take all the power out of it. It's part of the reason Dems seem feckless, because by the time they say something, the right has already been beating that drum for weeks. Even if it's a terrible drum for them that holds no water. Because the point isn't for them to say what they're saying; it's to make sure the Dems aren't heard when they say the same thing.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Unfortunately, the majority of the electorate is that sort of person, so you need to appeal to them. You've got to win the voters you have, not the ones you wish you had. That's why you need to keep your messaging simple (not saying that's an excuse to not do the work and actually have policies).

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

Read https://www.latinosfortrump.com/

It spells it all out right there in shiny propaganda.

[–] hanrahan@piefed.social 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Politicans lie and misdirect but why take up with the one that says they want to deliberately hurt minorities ? Why becase you're an asshole.

They all had a good look at this freak during 1.0 and choose him...again.

[–] kelpie_returns@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I dont disagree with the sentiment, but not everyone is invested in this stuff as you or I. Some because they can't be bothered to care, and others because there is a language and culture barrier that is actively being manipulated in order to obfuscate the actual message of these people and the impact that they're making.

We are all living in our own little reality tunnels and many people just dont have access to the features which lots of us take for granted in our own. We are not all receiving the same information about what is going on and that is by design. An opposition divided is made that much easier to best.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They literally, openly posted their step by step plan for anyone and everyone to read.

You are vastly underestimating the ability of modern media to maintain data silos.

Remember, before Trump won, the official Republican party line was that Project 2025 was written by an extremist far right think tank and had nothing to do with President Trump.

Only the first half of that was true, of course. But if you were a conservative Hispanic, and you got your news from Fox, social media, and your local churches, you would be unlikely to ever hear the words "Project 2025" except in the context "liberals are fearmongering about Project 2025 to make Trump look bad".

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 day ago

Hey look another person who's immune to propaganda. I'm sure you are wrong about something. Massacre at tiannenmen square maybe? Thats always a good one. How about tank man being run over? Hope you got your facts straight!

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Hispanics are by far the largest immigrant population to the US. When MAGA was chanting and holding signs saying "Mass deportations now", it was obvious that Hispanics would be the ones affected the most since they are the largest group. It's not rocket science.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Yep, concerted propaganda campaigns. They could not have won if Hispanics were united against Trump.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If only they hadn't let themselves to be immersed in the Republican/Fox information silo.

[–] Rekorse@sh.itjust.works -4 points 1 day ago

"Why did they choose to be propaganda'ed though?"

"Why did the woman let someone assault her?"

"Why did the victim allow themselves to be shot from 300 yards away?"

[–] VieuxQueb@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, we have a few newcomers in the shop here, and conservatives here always tell them it's imperative to vote conservative or they will lose their rights etc... They would have no idea what the implications are if I would not chime in and let them know if they do so they vote for the people who want to kick them out.
