You mean Tyler Robinson? Everything I've read says he's an anti-facist. Am I missing something?

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Tyler is a Groyper. Look that shit up. An opposing right wing gang to TPUSA.

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (4 children)

I can't find anything linking him to the movement except for a picture of him wearing a meme Halloween costume and a whole lot of wild speculation.

I'm not saying he isn't part of far right subculture, but there's way more available evidence at this time that points to him being anti-fascist.

Long Ass Edit: Post Deep Dive.

Alright.

Messages on gun casings: A lot of news sources are saying, by varying degrees, these are associated with Groypers.

Groypers use memes to obfuscate and soften their horrible, horrible views. I ran searches on symbols of the groyper movement, only looking for results posted more than a week ago. None of those phrases were noted as part of the movement or culture - except in one suspiciously post-edited article that mentioned only the messages on the bullet casings without providing references, despite having citations for everything else in the article. I'm not inferring anything nefarious from that, just pointing it out.

There are more iconic symbols of the movement: The groyper toad, pit vipers, swastikas, that weren't used. However, since Groypers have been largely deplatformed their culture is even more obscure and hard to pin down. I acknowledge it would be difficult to find what might be inside jokes.

Bella Ciao is more difficult to pin down because it's become popular again an both an ironic and an anti-facist message. It could go both ways.

All I can tell is that he was into memes.

The Halloween Costume: It's (potentially) a pepe and it's from 2018. I'm not even going to analyse this.

He was into guns: Not a good point for either side. He hunted. And guns are fun for everyone (as long as they're regulated and operated safely.)

No one seems to know what the hell Tyler Robinson believed: He's described as "political" by his family and "MAGA" by his grandma (who said their whole family is MAGA) without any specific examples. His online presence is null.

He was a registered non voter with no affiliation. Important to note here that Nick Fuentes called on his followers not to vote in recent election. But there are plenty of reasons someone might not vote.

A mysteriously anonymous letter from a "friend" was posted and later redacted by The Guardian, claiming he was left wing. Other second hand anecdotes say he was progressive. He supposedly donated money to Trump, but that was (I think?) discredited as someone else with the same name. He apparently hated Charlie Kirk, but that could go both ways.

Conclusion: I don't fucking know. With partisan politics controlling media, half want him to be a socialist and the other half want him be a right wing extremist. There's a lot of weak evidence pointing to a right wing extremist which could solidify in the coming days, and I'm open to that. I can see this swinging the other way, too.

I could see debating forever and never really understanding why he did it.

Personally, I'm going to keep a eye out for clear citations linking the messages to any movement if nothing else comes out about his motives. Until then I'm not convinced either way.

Bella ciao is played in a scene of sniper elite, and could well just be a game the shooter enjoyed honestly.

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

It's also a dlc song for Hearts of Iron 4, which in and of itself isn't a game that promotes fascism but there is a weird far-right subculture that does use it to praise stuff like Nazi Germany.

We should definitely avoid jumping to conclusions at this point

The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend

[–] Ceedoestrees@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Didn't say he was an enemy or a friend. He's a guy I don't know who shot someone I don't like.

He was a registered non voter with no affiliation

in utah that means right wing to far right wing

Yea I think he was anti facist raised in a MAGA family. He probably realized how brainwashed they were and it pissed him off.
